Every person faces ups and downs in life, the difference lies in how we deal with the low points of our life. Losing someone you love is probably the saddest experience anyone can go through. Our natural reaction to such a loss is grief. The more significant the loss; the more intense your grief will be. There is no right or wrong way to grieve and everyone grieves in a different way.

However, here are a few healthy ways you can cope with your loss to move on with your life.

1. Build a support system: When you are grieving, you may feel that nobody understands how you feel and would want to isolate yourself. Do not allow yourself to withdraw into a shell and instead build a support system of friends and family who you trust. You could also visit a counselor who is trained to deal with such situations. Joining a support group can also help.

2. Face your grief: Not allowing yourself to grieve can do more harm than good. You can suppress your grief for a short time but you cannot avoid it forever. The longer you avoid facing it, the more difficult it will be. Suppressing grief can also lead to a number of health problems such as depression, substance abuse and anxiety.

3. Look after your health: When grieving for the loss of a loved one, you may not feel hungry and may want to simply lie in bed all day. But you must instead get out, eat right and exercise regularly. When the body is healthy, you not only feel better physically but also emotionally. Avoid turning to alcohol and drugs to lift your mood.

4. Express yourself: Bottling up your emotions is never a good idea. However, sometimes talking about how you feel can be difficult. In such situations, look for alternate means of expressing yourself. For examples, you could try painting or start a scrapbook.

5. Look out for grief triggers: What makes coping with the loss of a loved one difficult is the fact that you share a number of life events with them. Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and festive occasions can bring back memories of the person and overwhelm you. To successfully heal, you must plan ahead for events like this that will trigger grief. Do not allow yourself to be alone at such times.

6. Seek professional help: Sometimes, when you are dealing with the loss of a loved one, you find yourself sinking into depression or find it difficult to resume your normal lifestyle. It is a good idea to consult a mental health practitioner or counselor.

People who regularly work out can go on about its benefits and also show off a toned physique. However, a bad or improper movement can be more harmful than no exercise at all. Read on to know some common exercise moves that are best avoided for their potential harmful effects.

  1. Dumbbell punches: By holding dumbbells and punching them forward into the air, you are just spending your energy with absolutely no return from it. It is good as a conditioning one if done for a long time but does not help the shoulders or the arms. Bicep curls and triceps extensions yield much better results than these punches.
  2. Shoulder Shrugs: The only muscle that gets worked here is the trapezius, which is at the top of the shoulders and the neck. The arms and the back do not get any benefit and shoulder shrugs can actually cause postural problems and increase shoulder tension. Best avoided if you are not a professional bodybuilder.
  3. Thigh machines: One of the most ineffective machines in the gym, the poor posture and no workout for the abs is one of the reasons the outer and inner thigh workouts should be avoided. Better results can be achieved with squats and lunges, which also help more muscles and help in losing weight.
  4. Plank rows: While plank rows or board lines work very well for core strengthening, it is not as effective for back and arm strengthening. Better results are achieved with the usual lines for these areas.
  5. Lat pull-downs behind the neck: This can be very harmful for people who have even minor shoulder joint problems. The idea is to build arm, torso, and back muscles by pulling a weighted bar down the front and back of the chest area. This can cause misalignment, shoulder impingement, or a tear in the rotator cuff, and in severe cases, even cervical vertebral fracture.
  6. Military Presses Behind the Head: Similar to a lat pull-down, here also, a barbell is lifted up and down behind the head and can cause the same problems as the earlier one, including fracture of the cervical spine.
  7. Squatting on a bosu ball: These colorful equipment are very alluring but can be really dangerous and can cause ankles and knees to be injured, causing meniscal tears or disruptions.
  8. Crunches: When improperly done, crunches produce the same position as one achieves while working on the computer - head forward and rounded shoulder. Crunches are meant to be done by pulling up on the head and not using the abs, as most people incorrectly do.

Make sure you get a trainer's advice on the right ways to work out so as to get the maximum benefits and avoid injuries.

The percentage of elderly people, classified as those above 60 years of age, is expected to go up in India from 8% in 2015 to 19 % in 2050. Various challenges including managing their health issues have been highlighted in a report released by UN Population Fund India titled ‘caring for our elders: Early response India Ageing Report 2017’. So in the country where we are already facing scarcity of health infrastructure, we have to be more aware regarding the increasing health problems and what steps we can take as primary prevention to decrease the burden of diseases in ourselves and our near and dear ones.

Like heart diseases and osteoarthritis of knees, kidney diseases are now recognized as a major medical problem worldwide. In India, Global Burden Disease 2015 kidney diseases are ranked as the eighth leading cause of death.

Diabetes and Blood pressure are major contributors of kidney diseases in India; others include long term pain killer intake, infections and renal stones.

Respect Your Kidneys – What we should do?

Kidney diseases are emerging as one of the important causes of morbidity which will largely affect your quality of life. There are however several easy ways to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease.

Daily Exercise - Stay fit and active

Staying fit and active helps to reduce your blood pressure and achieve better sugar control and therefore reduces the risk of Chronic Kidney Disease. 20-30 min of brisk walking is recommended at least 5 days a week.

Keep good control of your Diabetes (Sugar)

Kidney damage from diabetes can be reduced or prevented if detected early. It is important to keep control of blood sugar levels as they decrease the progression of kidney damage.

Control Hypertension - Monitor your blood pressure

We all are aware that high blood pressure can lead to a stroke or heart attack; very few know that it is also one of most common cause of progression of kidney damage. So it’s not important which or how many tablets you are taking, the goal is control of blood pressure as per your age.

Eat healthy and keep your weight in check

This can help prevent diabetes, heart disease and other conditions associated with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Reduce your salt intake. The recommended sodium intake is 5-6 grams of salt per day (around a teaspoon). In order to reduce your salt intake, try and limit the amount of processed and restaurant food and do not add salt to food.

Maintain a healthy fluid intake

Although there is not a single measure we can prescribe all but we should consume sufficient water to maintain good hydration. Consuming plenty of fluid helps the kidneys clear sodium, urea and toxins but consuming excess water can also lead to state of fluid overload. So, always consult your nephrologist for exact amount recommended for you. In addition, people who have already had a kidney stone are advised to drink 2 to 3 litres of water daily to lessen the risk of forming a new stone.

Quit Smoking

Smoking slows the flow of blood to the kidneys. When less blood reaches the kidneys, less amount of toxins are removed. Smoking also increases the risk of kidney cancer significantly.

Do not take OTC (over-the-counter pills - pain killers and anti-acidity)on a regular basis

Common drugs such non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, diclofenac and even anti-acidity drugs like omeperazole are known to cause kidney damage if taken regularly and for long time. So, avoid taking these medicines for longer time without advice of your doctor.

 ‘High Risk’ factors – When you should get your kidneys evaluated

  • you have diabetes for long time (especially if you are also having diabetic related eye problems)
  • you have hypertension
  • you are obese
  • one of your parents or other family members suffers from kidney disease
  • you are of African, Indian, or Aboriginal origin

‘Early yet alarming Symptoms’

  • Froathing in urine
  • Decreased urine output
  • Increased frequency of micturition at night (Going for passing urine again and again at night hours)
  • Swelling under eye lids and on ankles

Start taking dronis 30 from 1st day of cycle, take it daily for 21 days. Take it at the same time each day. After completing 21 tablets give a gap of 7 days. From 8th day start a new pack.
