Metabolic Syndrome - Causes And Symptoms

Metabolic Syndrome - Causes And Symptoms

Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of conditions that occur together and increase your chances of developing stroke, diabetes, and heart problems. This set of conditions includes high blood sugar, abnormal levels of cholesterol, abdominal fat, and high blood pressure. More importantly, having just any one of these conditions doesn't mean that you suffer from this problem.

What really brings about this condition?

Experts are still not sure as to what causes the development of this condition; the causes and risk factors can be manifold.

Some of the causes can be:

1. Insulin resistance -
A hormone produced by the pancreas in your body, insulin plays the vital role of helping your body to use the glucose as fuel. The problem of insulin resistance causes your body to produce more of this hormone so as to tackle the rising glucose levels in your body. Closely connected to excess belly fat, it causes the development of diabetes.

2. Overweight or obesity - Instances of obesity can also cause you to develop metabolic syndrome. More specifically, abdominal obesity can see your prospect increasingly significantly. It can bring about problems like insulin resistance and other associated conditions.

3. Abnormal hormone levels - Even the behavior of hormones can affect your chances of developing this health condition. For example, the hormonal disorder like PCOS can cause metabolic syndrome.

4. Unhealthy lifestyle - Having too much of processed foods without an adequate amount of physical activity can increase your prospects of developing metabolic syndrome. Eating a heart-healthy diet, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish can help to curb this problem.

How to identify this health condition?

When it comes to symptoms, this group of disorders doesn't reveal any specific signs but symptoms associated with individual health conditions that make up this group. You can come across signs like an increased waistline, or symptoms associated with diabetes like increased urination, a thirsty feeling, blurred vision, and fatigue.

Nonetheless, you're said to suffer from this problem if you exhibit these characteristics:

  • Abdominal obesity marked by waist size of over 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women
  • Triglyceride levels of 150 and above
  • Blood pressure levels of 130/85 and above
  • Fasting blood sugar measuring 110 and above
  • Good cholesterol levels less than 50 in women and 40 in men

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Before 6 months ago I was detected as diabetic. And my HBa1c at that time 14. Now after that I controlled my diet and do regular exercise. Also reduced weight from 103 kg to 80 kg. My age is 25 years and height is 180 cms. So now my HBa1C comes to 5.5 and PPBS is 92. Can I say that my diabetes is cured completely.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It is really good to see that you have been able to reduce weight to 80 kgs, and hence been able to bring down the blood glucose level and HbA1c% down. To answer your question whether diabetes is cured, can only be answered if you stop the treatment that is now on for a few days, then check the blood glucose levels. If levels (FBG & PP) remain normal then we can probably say that there is no more diabetes. Thanks.

Physiotherapy Treatment for Sleep Paralysis

MSPT (Master of Physical Therapy), BPT

Physiotherapy Treatment for Sleep Paralysis

Physiotherapy and sleep paralysis have a deep connection when you have to treat sleep paralyses the intelligent way. To discover the benefits of physiotherapy in healing sleep paralysis, let's get a clear understanding of sleep paralyses first and then the role of physiotherapy.

What is sleep paralysis and its common causes?
Sleep paralysis is a sleeping disorder, its symptoms are such  that you suddenly feel in the middle of the night or in mid sleep that you can't move, react, talk, etc. and feel that your body has frozen. This immobility is accompanied with frightful or eerie visions or sounds, which are not the reality and you still hallucinate.
This is often caused because of the following reasons, which are considered common causes of sleep paralysis:

  • A medical condition called narcolepsy
  • No fixed time of sleeping and waking, thus creating imbalance in sleep patterns
  • Inadequate sleep through the 24 hours
  • Excessive stress and workload
  • Alcohol consumption or drug abuse
  • A bad diet like heavy meals at night before bedtime
  • Extreme caffeine consumption

If any of these things are common, you may get a sleep paralysis.

Physiotherapy in healing sleep paralysis:
If it is a one night episode, you will eventually forget this. However, in case you are a victim every night or frequently, you may need some good remedies. Medications may not suit all, but physiotherapy is a safe mode of treatment, which suits all and people of all ages. That is why try physiotherapy for sleep paralysis at home or by going to a nearest physiotherapy center or expert.

How physiotherapy helps
Physiotherapy has some unique benefits like:

  1. It brings a balance in blood circulation through the body, which helps in lowering the blood pressure, normalize mood, reduce stress, and makes the blood flow to the body organs and brain better, thus inducing a good night's sleep.
  2. The exercise induced on to the body through physiotherapy has a dual effect. It makes the muscles workout, and induces the massage effect too. This makes the muscles more mobile, and brings warmth on the tissues. That is why exercising before bedtime can help you get a very peaceful sleep without fearful dreams and interferences of sleep paralysis attacks.
  3. You get a better mood due to increased blood circulation and the feeling of well-being due to the agile and worked out muscles. This good mood and satisfaction after a nice physiotherapy session sometime before you sleep lets the serotonin or happiness and satisfaction hormone build up in the body and brain. This makes you sleep without stress and in a nice mood thus resisting sleep paralysis.

Chicken V/S. Egg- Which has more protein?

Master in Dietetics, M.Pharm ( Pharmacology)
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Varanasi
Chicken V/S. Egg- Which has more protein?

Protein comes in ample amount from foods such as meat, eggs, legumes, dairy products, soy, and fish. It serves as the building blocks for the body's cells, muscles, skin, tissue, and organs.
Although, both chicken and egg are infused with high amounts of protein, they do vary on the grounds of the actual protein content per serving. So which is a better source of protein?

Nutritional facts of 100g chicken

Protein: 27g
Fats: 4g
Calories: 153
Sodium: 51mg
Cholesterol: 75mg

Nutritional facts of 100g eggs

Protein: 13g
Fats: 11g
Calories: 155
Sodium: 124mg
Cholesterol: 373mg

Both chicken and eggs are a low calorie and high protein option. However, chicken contains double the amount of protein than eggs per serving, emerging as a clear winner. Not only that, chicken also contains less cholesterol in comparison to eggs, making it a much healthier food choice.

Nevertheless, eggs possess a number of other health benefits, and should not be ruled out of your daily diet.

1. Eggs contain riboflavin or Vitamin B2 in abundance, which helps in improving your metabolism
2. Egg whites are a rich source of Vitamin D, B6, B12 and minerals such as zinc, iron, and copper, all of which are essential for the proper functioning of your body
Even though both chicken and eggs are almost equally healthy, the key to proper health is to eat all you want but in a moderate manner. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

I have electrical job and I loose my weight and strength I want to gain my weight and strength.
Eat plenty of calories at every meal. Eating five small, low-calorie meals isn’t going to cut it; they’ve got to be big and rich in calories. Load up on a restaurant-sized meal each time, with big portions of meat, vegetables, and a carbohydrate. Eating this much might not exactly feel comfortable, but it’s the best way to gain weight fast.[2] •A large enough breakfast might consist of a three-egg omelet, two slices of bacon or sausage, a cup of roasted breakfast potatoes and a glass of orange juice. •For lunch, try a fully dressed turkey club on whole wheat bread, two bananas, and a salad. •Dinner could be a grilled steak, loaded baked potato and a few cups of grilled veggies.
