A Quick Guide to Geriatric Nutrition

Special nutritional needs are often required in special circumstances. Unlike adults from 20 to 60, children and elderly people have specific needs as their physical requirements are different. Just like pregnant women need tailor-made diets for their specific needs, children and elderly people also require appropriate diets without too much variation.

The requirement for geriatric or elderly nutrition

As the body ages, certain functions within are slowed down and thus, the processes are not able to completely recuperate and replenish what was lost. Certain functions are affected more than others and hence, need specific nutrients to regenerate.

Tips for Geriatric Nutrition

Let's take a look at some of the specific diet requirements as well as certain items, which should be avoided.

1. Consumption of calcium rich foods - Bones are a part of the human body that tend to suffer a lot of wear and tear and they start showing signs of weakening after 60. It is thus, important to replenish calcium in the body to help the bones get their building blocks. Some examples of calcium-rich foods are almonds and green leafy vegetables like kale. Dairy products are also good as long as the fat content within them is low.

2. Keeping the body hydrated - Although physical activity reduces with age, dehydration can still occur within senior people and thus, it is important that they remain hydrated. Simply drinking water may not be enough and juices or other water-rich foods such as watermelons should be used to supplement for hydration.

3. Lessening sodium within the body - The presence of excess sodium in the body can cause blood pressure to shoot up and result in high blood pressure, which may then further result in more ailments like strokes. It is pertinent that foods rich in sodium such a red meats be lessened or cut out of the diet altogether.

4. Lessening sugar consumption or any other foods that may exacerbate diabetes - Another factor to consider is the consumption of sugar and sugar-filled products. Not just for diabetics, but elderly people have a tendency to develop high blood sugar and hence, it is prudent to reduce sugar intake.

For cough start eating jaggery (gurh) after everytime you eat food, get a sarso oil body massage from your mother or sister once a weak. Consume cow ghee with your meals, drink hot milk at bed times, start doing surya namaskar in morning, also start doing prithvi mudra 20 minutes everyday with your fingers, in 3 months you will gain 6 to 10 kgs naturally, but be regular. Eat a heavy breakfast. Keep your intestine clean by drinking 3 to 4 liter water everyday but do not drink water after meals, drink after 90 minutes.

How to overcome depression and how to put on some weight in that way eating not only food.
You need to meet with a counselor immediately and if that person feels you need to meet with a doctor too, you must do so. You must cooperate with both therapies and be consistent. I suggest that you visit these professionals along with your parents because their involvement is quite critical to your recovery. If it is of recent origin, you could easily pin-point it and take care of it. But I suspect that it may have to do with something in your developmental years, or your family background. In the meantime do the following, sincerely: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back. If you love yourself adequately, you will never do harm to yourself. Be positive always and learn to do everything possible to invest into yourself. Life is extremely precious and because the depression, which is a mood disorder, makes you feel like giving up you must still persevere. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. Because you are young the prognosis is good subject to your cooperation. You want to put on weight you must exercise regularly and eat well. Sometimes you may suddenly feel that you are over-weight and will want to reduce and may have a problem with that. So do give this a serious thought and then do whatever is necessary. Any way exercise is a must for healthy living.

ताजा धनिया पत्ती से होने वाले स्वास्थ्य लाभ

अलग-अलग तरह के व्यंजन बनाने में धनिया पत्ता का खूब इस्तेमाल होता है। दरअसल धनिया एक शक्तिशाली औषधि है, जिससे शरीर को काफी फायदा पहुंचता है। धनिया पत्ता में थाइमाइन, विटामिन सी, राइबोफ्लाविन, फास्फोरस, कैल्सियम, आइरन, नाइसिन, सोडियम, कैरोटीन, ऑक्सलिक एसिड और पोटैशियम प्रचूर मात्रा में पाए जाते हैं। साथ ही इसमें कार्बोहाईड्रेट, प्रोटीन, फैट, फाइबर और पानी भी बड़ी मात्रा में पाया जाता है। इसका स्वाद हल्का तीखा होता है, जिससे यह भोजन में एक खास किस्म का फ्लेवर पैदा करता है।

धनिया पत्ती भले ही ज्यादा महंगा न हो, पर स्वास्थ्य के लिए यह काफी फायदेमंद है। व्यंजनों को और भी लजीज बनाने के साथ-साथ यह कई बीमारियों को भी दूर करता है। आइए हम आपको बताते हैं धनिया पत्ता से होने वाले फायदों के बारे में।

आंखों की समस्या

ताजा धनिया पत्ता में विटामिन सी, विटामिन ए, एंटी ऑक्सीडेंट और फॉस्फोरस जैसे मिनरल पाए जाते हैं, जो मस्कुलर डिजेनरेशन, नेत्र शोथ और आंख की उम्रवृद्धि को कम करता है। साथ ही इससे आंखों को आराम भी पहुंचता है। धनिए के कुछ पत्तों को पीस कर इसे पानी में उबाल लें। इसके बाद किसी साफ कपड़े से इसे छान लें। इसके कुछ बूंद को आंखों में डालने से आंखों के दर्द और पानी निकलने की समस्या से निजात मिलता है।

नाक से खून आना

20 ग्राम धनिए के ताजे पत्ते लें और उसे थोड़े से कपूर के साथ पीस लें। अब इसके रस को अच्छी तरह से निचोड़ लें। जब आप इसे नाक में डालेंगे तो खून का आना तुरंत बंद हो जाएगा। साथ ही आप इसके पेस्ट को अपने ललाट पर भी लगा सकते हैं। इससे भी नाक से खून का आना बंद हो जाएगा। इसके लिए ताजे धनिया पत्ते की सुगंध भी फायदेमंद होती है।

त्वचा की समस्या

अपने एंटी-फंगल, एंटी-सेप्टिक, डिटॉक्सीफाइंग और डिसइंफेकटेंट गुणों के कारण ताजा धनिया पत्ता त्वाचा से संबंधित कुछ समस्याओं से भी निजात दिलाता है। खुजली से राहत पाने के लिए आप इसके रस को पीएं या फिर इसका पेस्ट त्वचा पर लगाएं। इसके अलावा शरीर में होने वाली फुंसी से निजात पाने के लिए ताजा धनिया पत्ते के रस को शहद के साथ मिला लें और इस पेस्ट को त्वाचा के प्रभावित क्षेत्र में लगाएं। करीब 15 मिनट तक इस पेस्ट को लगे रहने दें और फिर ठंडे पानी से इसे धो लें।

प्रीगनेंसी के दौरान मतली या उल्टी

प्रीगनेंसी के शुरुआती दौर में कई महिलाएं मतली या उल्टी का अनुभव करती है। ऐसी स्थिति में एक कप धनिया पत्ता को एक कप शकर और पानी के साथ खौलाएं और ठंडा हो जाने के बाद इसका सेवन करें।


धनिया पत्ता एंटी ऑक्सीडेंट, एंटी माइक्रोबायल और एंटी इंफेक्शस का बेहतरीन स्नेत है। साथ ही इसमें पाए जाने वाला आइरन और विटामिन सी इम्यून सिस्टम को मजबूत बनाता है। चेचक के दौरान इससे आराम पहुंचता है। साथ ही यह चेचक के दर्द को भी कम कर देता है।

मुंह के छाले से छुटकारा

धनिया के सुगंधित तेल में सिटरोनेलोल पाया जाता है, जो कि एक बेहतरीन एंटी सेप्टिक है। इसके अलावा दूसरे तत्वों की बात करें तो इसमें एंटी माइक्रोबायल और उपचारात्मक गुण भी पाया जाता है, जो जख्म और मुंह के छाले के लिए फायदेमंद होता है। धनिया से सांसों में ताजगी आती है और मुंह के छाले भी ठीक होते हैं।

कोलेस्टेरोल लेवल को प्रभावित करता है

ताजा धनिया का पत्ता ओलक्ष्क एसिड, निलओलक्ष्क एसिड, स्टेरिक एसिड, पलमिटिक एसिड और एस्कॉर्बिक एसिड का बेहतरीन स्नेत है। यह सारे तत्व रक्त के कोलेस्टेरोल स्तर को घटाने में बेहद प्रभावी होते हैं। साथ ही यह शिरा और धमनी की अंदरूनी परत पर कोलेस्टेरोल को जमा होने से रोकता है, जिससे हार्ट अटैक का खतरा काफी कम हो जाता है।

पाचन तंत्र में सुधार

ताजा धनिया पत्ता ऐपटाइजर के रूप में भी काम करता है। यह एंजाइम और पाचन के लिए जरूरी रस के स्नव में मददगार होता है। यानी धनिया पत्ता भोजन को पचाने में भी मदद करता है। धनिया पत्ता ऐनरेक्सीया से निजात पाने में भी सहायक होता है।

Most of the brands of green tea available in the market are ok. Some brands are lemon flavoured, ginger flavoured, that will add taste to the tea. Brewing; 1. Boil the water >200degrees c 2. If dip tea, dip for 10 minutes, stir and drink it. 3. If powdered leaves put in the boiled water for 10 minutes, filter and drink it. 4. If you are not diabetic add one teaspoon of honey, good for health. Leaves are not sold as green tea leaves in market. If you go yo some tea estate you can get as a friendly gesture.

There is considerable evidence that cocoa can provide powerful health benefits, being especially protective against cardiovascular disease. But of course, this doesn’t mean people should go all out and consume lots of chocolate every day. It is still loaded with calories and easy to overeat on. Maybe have a square or two after dinner and try to really savor them. Be aware that a lot of the chocolate on the market is crap. You need to choose quality stuff… organic, dark chocolate with 70% or higher cocoa content. Dark chocolates often contain some sugar, but the amounts are usually small and the darker the chocolate, the less sugar it will contain. There are of course other benefits to chocolate … such as the awesome taste.

Dear you can easily gain weight and get a healthy muscular body by following these best things - 1. To gain weight, your digestion should work properly. If you have any disease of digestive system you should treat disease first. For proper digestion - take 10 gms powder of carom seeds (ajwain, 10 gm powder of cumin (jeera), 10 gm of rock salt. Mix them well and take 1/2 teaspoon (3-5 gm) of mixture daily after meal. Or take 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper (kali mirch), 1/ 2 tea spoon of jeera (cumin), 2-3 slice of ginger. Boil it in one glass of water for 2-3 minutes. Drink 5-10 teaspoons (15-20 ml) in morning and evening for strong digestive system. Or you can take amla powder 1 teaspoon with water for strong digestion. 2. Take a diet rich with proteins and fats. You should take high calorie food that increase your muscle mass and induce growth in bones. I am sending the diet chart. Follow it in your daily life to fastly gain weight * in morning, take a glass of milk added with 2 teaspoons of protein powder with breakfast. * in lunch time, take 1 bowl of curd or 100 gm of cheese, a bowl of vegetable, with chapattis. * in evening, take 1 glass of milk (300 ml) with 2 bananas. * in night, take a bowl of careals (daal, a bowl of salad with chapattis. 3. Weakness is a result of lack of physical or muscle strength. If you are feeling that extra effort is required to move your arms, legs, or other muscles, it could also be a result of any disease, illness and too much activity at one time and not taking the food to match the amount of physical effort you are doing. Sometimes low levels of minerals (electrolytes), such as potassium or sodium also result in body weakness. Other important reason could be the problems with your thyroid gland. Because your thyroid gland is responsible for regulating the way the body uses energy. A low thyroid level can cause fatigue, weakness, laziness, weight gain etc. And a high thyroid level can cause fatigue, weight loss, muscle weakness etc. Sometime because of stress you may feel disinterest in your routine works. Since the reasons for your weakness are not known, I shall advise the following - 1. Keep yourself hydrated. 2. Get extra rest for some days till you feel more energetic. 3. Avoid watching television for long hours. Indulge in relaxing activities. 4. Avoid stress and too much physical exertion. 5. Mr. lybrate-user, The diet mentioned looks fine except following: 9 nutri biscuits, & 1 plastic packet of poha. Both these should be dropped. No replacement is needed. Rest of the diet is more than enough. There is no mention about what physical activity is being done every day. Because if one has diabetes then at least 1 hour's brisk walk every day is essential.
