Is it safe to use contact lenses? or any problems will occur if I use contact lenses? then, please tell me what are the possibilities of side effects of contact lenses.

Phaco Development Program, Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology, DNB Ophtalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Mysore
If you use contact lenses from a good brand there will be lesser chances of problems. The following points have to be followed while using contact lenses: 1. Dust must not fall in your eyes when you are using lenses. 2. You must not wear them 24 hrs no matter what anyone claims. It is advisable to use them for maximum 10 hours continuously 3. Better to use monthly disposable lenses 4. Cleaning the lenses daily with a good solution is a must.

My eyes get red when I watch TV for 5 hours or more what I should do in such condition.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
My eyes get red when I watch TV for 5 hours or more what I should do in such condition.
Eye strain, or asthenopia, is when the eyes get tired from excessive or intense use. It can be annoying, but it tends to disappear with rest. Although it’s not often a serious condition, eye strain could be a symptom of an underlying problem. Eye strain is known to cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and headaches Eye strain may lead to other problems, such as: • Headaches • Difficulty Concentrating • Irritability • Burning Sensation • Watery Eyes • Dry Eyes • Photophobia • Eye Pain The solution for this problem I its reduced usage of TV and use them inproper light. There is nothing more effective than controlling usage to reduce and negate the effects. You can also reduce the intensity of the TV screen by attaching a filter or by getting an eye-friendly screen. Above all, one must try to reduce the amount of TV usage or take frequent breaks.

Uveitis - Do You Know It Can Increase Risk Of Other Diseases?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Ghaziabad
Uveitis - Do You Know It Can Increase Risk Of Other Diseases?

Uveitis is a set of inflammatory diseases that results in the swelling and damaging of the eye tissue. It can lead to temporary or permanent loss of vision. This disease often affects a part of the eye called the uvea, from which it has derived its name. It can affect people of all ages and can last from a short to long period of time. Ophthalmologists categorize uveitis into four major parts posterior uveitis, anterior uveitis, panuveitis uveitis and intermediate uveitis. This disease can be infectious or noninfectious, depending on the nature of the infection.

What causes uveitis and what are the major risk factors?
This disease is caused by the eye's inflammatory response and is caused by a series of potential factors such as the following:

  • Immune system attack from the body
  • Eye bruises
  • Eye infection or tumor within the eye
  • Foreign toxins that penetrate the eye

What are the diseases associated with uveitis?
Uveitis is associated with a range of diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Behcet's syndrome, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada's (VKH) disease, psoriasis, herpes zoster infection, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, toxoplasmosis, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis.

What are the typical symptoms of uveitis?
One or both eyes can be affected by uveitis. Some of the common symptoms include pain in the eye, light sensitivity and blurred and dark spots in vision. Moreover, the symptoms might vary from person to person and greatly depends on the type of inflammation. The symptoms also vary according to the type of uveitis.

What is the detection process?
The process of detection starts with a patient's medical history followed by several medical tests to rule out autoimmune disorders. This is followed by an evaluation of the central nervous system to rule out multiple sclerosis. Some of the other tests conducted by ophthalmologists include measuring the ocular pressure, slit lamp exam, funduscopic exam and visual acuity test.

The primary aim of the treatment is to eradicate inflammation, restore vision, prevent tissue damage and reduce pain. The treatment plan depends on the type of uveitis a patient displays. Doctors often suggest a dose of corticosteroid eye drops to arrest the infection in and around the eye. Other treatment methods include the prescription of immunosuppressive agents.

Furthermore, a doctor may suggest steroidal medication in the form of an eye drop, pill or injection. It can also be surgically infused into the eye. Some other agents used for treatment are azathioprine, methotrexate and mycophenolate. Medications such as these require regular monitoring of the blood to check for any side effects. Doctors also suggest biologics such as infliximab, rituximab, and adalimumab. Most of these drugs have a specific target in the immune system.

I am suffering from myopia and have been using glasses from almost 5 years now. I m tired of it. The power is draining continuously. Its -1.75D(right) & -1.50D(left). I want to improve my vision. Wat should i do?

I have a sister who is 7 years old. She watches TV and the iPad for at least 4 hours. Is it likely that she might become nearsighted at this age? What is the remedy?

Hi. I have a few suggestions for your sister regarding the usage of computers, mobile phones and books. Follow the rule of" 20" this means that every 20 minutes, take a gap of 20 seconds, blink your eyes actively 20 times and focus at an object which is minimum 20 feet away. This will help in relieving your eyes from the continuous strain that is caused due to staring. Staring at the computer continuously causes us to subconsciously blink less than normal. This causes the tear film on the surface of the eye to dry up. The result of this is pain, discomfort, etc. Another suggestions regarding the usage of computers is to maintain a proper posture. The computer must be positioned at the same height as your eye level. The neck should not be inadvertently flexed or extended. Roughly, an angle of 90 degrees should be maintained between your upper body and thighs. Likewise, a similar angle (90 degrees) should be maintained between your lower legs and thighs. Also the angle between your hands and arms should be roughly 90 degrees. This is the healthy ergonomic way of sitting while using a computer. Maintenance of proper posture would help in further relieving the symptoms of eye discomfort and pain. Also, you could consider using a lubricant eye drop (preservative free) for 3 to 4 times daily. There are some preservative free eye drops available (eg. Genteal eye drops) all these suggestions may take a while to sink in and imbibe in your routine. Once followed, they are sure to work wonders for you. It is important that proper distance and posture be maintained while using television or the ipad. If not done so, chances of having refractive error/ other eye issues are more. Hope my suggestions help you. Take care. Cheers.

I have red eyes for over 3 days. What should I do. Tell me immediately. I am very tense.
Hello dear there are many causes for redness of eyes mainly allergy, infection, inflammation and dry eyes etc. 1. Redness + itching: allergy 2. Redness + pain+ watering + decreased vision: infection 3. Redness + pain: inflammation 4. Redness+ foreign body sensation: dryness if there is only redness then it is normal as slight exposure to dust, temperature or air or eyes may be red in morning. Stress may also cause redness. I usually do not treat when there is only redness, you can 1. Blink a lot 2. Wash eyes with fresh water 3. Cold compresses 4. Use lubricating eyedrop like flogel these measures will help to keep your eyes healthy but it will not have any effect on redness (treating generalredness alone is not necessary also) having said that you should consult local ophthalmologist for proper examination and treatment.

I am 25 years old and I want to go for laser eye treatment to remove my eye number. What should I do?

FICO, Specialist in Cataract,Cornea and refractive surgeries , MD - Ophthalmology

I am 25 years old and I want to go for laser eye treatment to remove my eye number. What should I do?
Normally the number gets stabilised by 18 yrs of age. If your number is stable for one year and you dont have any ocular disease you can undergo laser eye surgery if thickness is good. It is a very safe procedure with advent of newer technologies. However if you have a very high spectacle number or thin cornea, then laser surgery is not advisable. In these cases, icl is a very safe alternative option.

My job demands 12 hrs of computer usage on day to day basis. I have computer syndrome. My eyes pain a lot someone. I don't feel like watching anything then. Hence, I have decided to go for good AR coated glasses. Also coating which can filter blue rays. I check with crizal lenses. It has crizal prevention. But this is very costly. Hence, I want to check is it worth spending so much or there is alternative in local brands? Some facts: Also in year 2011 I have gone through lasik for correction.

U have 2 choices to go for blue filteration- one is in your glasses, the other in your screen or PC- The computer apps/software should be free. High computer usage causes eye strain and back (spine) related issues. Proper care and attention can completely avoid them. This information is readily available online as Computer vision syndrome. Digital eye strain or computer ergonomics. For eyes, follow 20-20-20 rule and Palming. It means that after every 20 minutes of screen time, for 20 seconds look beyond a distance of 20 feet. Palming is part of yoga- rub your clean hands to warm them and gently cup your eyes. With a history of LASIK. It will be wise to use a good lubricating eye drop 3-4 times daily.
