My 3 years old son has difficulty in speaking, he can babble but can’t speak and point his finger towards the desired objects. Instead he use to take us by holding our hand to the desired object example towards AC switch or Refrigerator door. He can’t even speak Mama, Papa and can’t point when asked about them. Had a poor eye contact. He is physically fit with all emotions, plays game on mobile. He has been doubted with ASD but the assessment is still pending. We have been advised to do BERA and EEG Tests which appears normal. His MRI report is has some deviation from normal which needs to be understood. Investigation: MRI Brain Plain Results: Multiplanar Mr. imaging of the brain was done. TIW, TSE-T2W and FLAIR images were obtained in three orthogonal planes. The study shows small hyperintensities on FLAIR involving peritrigonal region/occipital region on both the sides, possibly incomplete myelination Rest of the brain parenchyma appears normal. The basil cisterns and superficial subarachnoid CSF spaces are normal. Ventricles appear prominent. The mid brain, pons and medulla are normal. The cerebellar hemispheres are normal. Visualized parts of the sella, 5 th, 7 th and 8 th nerve complexes are grossly normal on routine brain imaging. Major flow voids are present. Advice: Clinical Correlation. Please help me to understand the report. Regards,

You should ignore all non verbal requests & child will express verbally may not be very clear in begining but. This will improve with time. Communicate with him verbally in correct way wth patience. Leaving him amongst other kids is also very effective way to develope speech.

A good complementary diet, along with breastmilk ensure a good weight and proper growth of a child after the age of 6 months. I may need to see your baby's growth chart to comment further.

Please take rhus tox 200 - thrice daily for next 3-4 days. Also -- soak a washcloth in cool tap water wring out the excess water and then sponge areas like your armpits, feet, hands and groin to reduce the temperature. Also, you can place cold, damp washcloths on your forehead and the back of your neck. The cloth pieces should be changed regularly after a few minutes. This remedy is beneficial when dealing with a high fever as it helps keep temperature under control. You can also take a bath in lukewarm water to relax your body. Taking a shower, however, may not be a good idea. Plus, needless to say, take as much rest as possible as it helps the body fight the illness. Note: do not use very cold water as it may cause the internal body temperature to increase. Consult me for homeopathic treatment. Recommend me by clicking on recommend option and leave feedback.

Hello. My daughter is 4 month old she is suffering from loose motion can you please advice your thoughts please

Pediatrician, Pune
Golden yellow coloured loose stools are normal when the baby is on breast feeds, if the baby is gaining weight adequately, passing sufficient amount of urine, don't call it suffering from loose stool, it is ok.

My Son 19 months, keeps getting cold again n again. Almost every month. I take him to Dr. who mostly prescribes him 5 ml Advent suspension with other syrups. Is this a high antibiotic? Is there any other home remedy or anything better I can do for him?

My Son 19 months, keeps getting cold again n again. Almost every month. I take him to Dr. who mostly prescribes him ...
There's nothing like high or low antibiotics. All antibiotics should be used judiciously as it may lead to resistance. I think your child is suffering from allergy. Best way is to avoid possible allergen like dust. Pollen etc. Put saline nasal drops frequently into each nostril whenever he has symptoms of cold.

Even if I put her two spoons ...
Better avoid milk & give cereals, milk products. Keep changing foods offered. If vomitings are persistent any antiemetic drug will help. Solid food will provide condensed calories vital for growth.

My daughter is almost 20 months old and have been running with high fever for 2 to 3 days.. Fever being 102 to 103 degrees. Have consulted a doc here in Mumbai but medicines don't seem to work. Her fever returns post few hours of dosage. She has vomited too esp post taking medicines in her anger since she didn't want to take medicines and we had pushed it down her throat. We aren't sure of the height exactly but doc mentioned she is fine with respect to height, age and weight. Medicines prescribed - 5 ML Macpod 50 twice a day for 6 days and 3.75 ML meftal P thrice a day till fever exists. This wasn't working so we again checked with the doc and he suggested to give 6 ML Crocin instead of meftal. She falls sick every 3 odd months with fever and get running nose too. We are really worried and thinking of getting blood and urine tests done. Pls suggest.

Yes if there are frequent infection like this then you must get cbc blood culture urine r/m and basic abdominal sonography shall be done. However these kids in infancy or around infancy do develop frequent seasonal infection specially flu like illness what is evident from history given by you as well. So preferably your child should get regular flu vaccine. After child is without fever for at least few days. I can understand worry would be highest peak for you. But don't worry things are going to be fine.

Piles has no relation with the current problem. Children tend to suffer from stomach ache in the initial months of life. However if there are no other symptoms, child is taking orally well and there is weight gain, nothing to worry about. Otherwise consult a pediatrician. Warm Regards.

Excessive Use of Mobile Phones in Children

MA - Clinical Psychology, P.G. Diploma in Guidance and Counseling, BA In Psychology

Excessive Use of Mobile Phones in Children

The most advanced and effective communication device in this century is mobile phone. Mobile phone is not only being used by the corporate or highly qualified professional. People from all type of social group have mobile phone in their hands now. Usage of the mobile phone is not increased only with all social groups but also with people of all age groups. Children are the more noticeable group as they are using cell phones of all types. A recent research study shows that children are really capable of using any advanced type of mobile phones even without any proper guidance. Though mobile phones are the effective mode of communication, it is a well known fact that it also has adverse side effects if being over used. The mobile phones emit shockwave radioactive radiations that affect the body in various manners.

Adverse effects of mobile phone usage:

Today's children are growing up in a radio-frequency environment that never existed in human history before. The radiation emitted by mobile phones and mobile phone masts can have adverse effects on children. Some include:

  1. Affects your Immunity Status: cell phones after a full day usage contains many germs on their display which are highly numbered than your toilet seats. These germs are easily transferred to your body as you touch frequently or use close to your face for talking. This increases the risk of exposure to the germs and reduces your immune strength as immune status are not fully developed for children.
  2. Increase Risk of Chronic Pains: prolonged use of mobile phones for playing games or texting requires continuous movement for your hands which may develop chronic pain in joints of your shoulders and hands.
  3. Vision Problem: children when concentrate much on playing games in mobile phone they even fail to blink frequently with the increased interest and attraction towards the game. This causes the dryness of the conjunctiva and also increases the ocular tension.
  4. Affects your emotions negatively and increases the stress level

Mobile Phone Safety For Kids:

As a parent, you must take preventive measures to minimize your child's exposure to the harmful effects of mobile phones. These include:

  • Do not give cell phone if your child is under 16 years. A child's brain is too sensitive to withstand the effects of mobile radiation.
  • Do not let your child hold a mobile phone directly up to his head. Use an air-tube headset instead.
  • Do not let your child make calls in buses, trains, cars, and elevators. The mobile phone works harder to get the signal out through the metal, which increases the power level.
  • Do not let your child use cell phone when the signal is weak. It will increase the power to the maximum, as the phone attempts to connect to a new relay antenna.
  • Limit the use of cell phone around children.
  • Make sure that there is no mobile phone mast or network tower near your home or your kid's school.
  • Do not let children take mobile phones to school.
  • Do not leave mobile phones in your children's bedroom at night.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, BDS
Dentist, Hyderabad
How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

Mouth breathing in children is very common and while a kid with open mouth might seem cute, it is not always the case. The parents need to be made aware that a child breathing through the mouth all the time is not normal and it is high time they find a way to manage it.

A little understanding of the effects of the mouth breathing habit on the child's health in general and oral health in particular can be an eye-opener for the parent. For an educated person, there are obvious symptoms, which indicate that the child is a mouth-breather.

These symptoms include:

  1. Dryness of the lips
  2. Crowding of the front teeth
  3. Snoring
  4. Sleeping with the mouth open
  5. Recurrent infections of the airways including sinusitis and middle ear infections
  6. Bad breath

Common causes include:

  1. Chronic nasal obstruction/congestion because of which the child is not able to get enough oxygen through the nose.
  2. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  3. Thumb or finger-sucking habit
  4. Recurrent respiratory infections

Effects of mouth breathing on oral health:

Mouth breathing may seem like a harmless habit, but has serious effects on the oral and dental health of the child. Some of them are discussed below.

  1. Dry mouth: A constantly open mouth can lead to drying up of the saliva. This in turn leads to reduced effects of saliva including the flushing effect on the bacteria and the food deposits. This leads to increased chances of tooth decay and gum diseases.
  2. Tooth decay: With reduced saliva, the pH remains acidic for a longer period of time, leading to increased chances of tooth decay.
  3. Gum diseases: Reduced amounts of saliva also leads to increased gum disease and periodontal disease as the bacteria are not removed and have a conducive environment to act upon.
  4. Facial development: A mouth breathing child maintains a different posture than a nose breather. This leads to a narrow and long face, flattened nose, smaller nostrils, reduced facial tone, thin upper lip, pouty upper lip, and a small lower jaw.
  5. Speech: An open mouth causes the tongue to thrust into the palate when talking. This leads to altered pronunciation of some sounds; especially and can cause lisping.
  6. Braces: Mouth breathing causes multiple challenges including prolonged treatment period, inability to close the gaps, reduced stability of the realigned teeth, and increased chances of relapse. The added complication of increased gum disease and tooth decay makes it worse. The habit needs to be corrected first before going in for braces.

If that sounds like a long list, they are not all inclusive. Early intervention in the habit can correct and negate all these effects. Talk to your dentist to know how to help your mouth breathing child.

As pulmonary pressure is normal there is nothing to fear and foramen ovale usually will close or surgery may needed. If you can upload the full report to me it is better to give you a better idea.
