Yes it can be due to osteoporosis her spine is getting tilted or knee joint or hip joint is getting compressed that makes her feel her leg shorter. You need to see an orthopedic surgeon asap. Don't ignore as it can be dangerous since she is already in menopausal stage.

Hello. I had a small plate removal surgery 2 months back. After giving proper time to recovery I started working out. After some time I noticed that my hand has lost some muscle. The hand with surgery is not in shape as the other had. The bicep size has also reduced to half inch. I want to recover the muscle and get my both hands in same shape. What should I do.

Dear lybrate-user, Your problem is due to disuse wasting of the involved side probably due to the fear factor. Since the plate has been removed the union must be good. You can slowly exercising the hand in graded manner. An occupational therapist can show you the activities by which you can regain your upper limb function. Initially you can start with moving all the joints of the arm through full range of movements starting with the small joints of the hand ,wrist, elbow, and shoulder. You can slowly progress to weighted exercises using 2 kg dumbbells slowly increasing the weight. Try to do all activities with both hands.

Healthy Heart: 5 Lifestyle Changes You Need To Know!

Lifestyle is one of the best defences against heart disease. All you need to do to maintain good heart health is to just make simple but significant changes to your lifestyle. By doing so, you end up minimising the risk factors associated with heart disease such as coronary artery disease.

The lifestyle changes that you must make for a healthy heart are:

1. Be physically active - Research by Harvard University shows that watching television for 2 hours a day can increase your chances of developing heart disease by 15%. But if you exercise or indulge in some kind of physical activity for about 30 minutes every day, you can significantly improve the health of your heart as any kind of physical activity improves your blood circulation as well as blood pressure.

2. Maintain a healthy body weight - Having a low body weight or a high one can also put you at risk of getting heart disease. For a good heart health, you need to protect it from fatigue and damage. By keeping your weight at an optimum level, your blood circulation, as well as body fluids, end up working efficiently, protecting your heart from unnecessary strain.

3. Have a balanced diet - It is important that you eat foods that are high in fiber and nutrients, but low in calories in order to stay healthy. Consumption of high cholesterol foods like processed meats, desserts, etc. often lead to heart problems. But foods like tuna or salmon, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean proteins such as chicken and fish in your diet can reduce your risk of developing heart disease.

4. Manage stress - Stress is another factor that causes you to have poor heart health. To prevent the damaging effect that stress can have on your heart, exercising is what you should do. This is because when you exercise, you release endorphins (brain chemicals that trigger a feel-good feeling in your body), which help in improving your physical and mental makeup. Additionally, exercising has also been found to reduce your chances of dying from a heart attack.

5. Quit smoking - Research reveals that smoking increases your chance of getting heart disease by about 2 - 4 times. As it can damage the lining of the arteries, which leads to build up of atheroma, and narrows the artery. This eventually can lead to heart attack or stroke. Smoking further reduces the level of oxygen in your blood, due the presence of carbon monoxide, that means  your heart has to pump harder to supply the body with the oxygen it needs. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a cardiologist.

Hi, your presentation is not much, clear to reach a diagnosis, unless the affectrd parts are viewed, properly. However, tk, pleny of water take, protein rich diet, on time. A. Causes-: Improper metabolism, Suppression of natural urges, anger, jealousy, grief, poor elimination, intake of dry, pungent and salty food, intake of polluted food, mental and physical stress, viewing of TV for long periods, reading with insufficient light, sleeplessness etc. B. Origin of migraine headache-: Due to the causative factors, Pitta Dosha obstructs the flow of Vata dosha in brain, causing throbbing pain. C. Pain Management-: 1. Avoiding the cause and trigger factors. 2. Keeping a diary record of specific foods eaten, environmental exposure, sleep patterns may help to identify personal trigger factors. 3. Sneha nasya therapy at home-: Sneha nasya, instillation of medicated oils to the nostrils by Shadbindu tailam or Anu tailam yield significant benefits. 4. Apply a paste of freshly ground clay or freshly ground sandalwood to the forehead, let dry, rub off by hand and wash. 5. Mix ¼ teaspoon of clove powder with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon oil. Apply this paste on the affected area for 20-30 minutes. 6. Add chamomile powder to 1 cup of boiling water. Transfer the liquid to a cup. Drink when hot. It gives fast relief from migraine. 7. Take ½ glass of carrot juice. Add ½ glass of spinach juice. Mix well. Drink this juice twice daily. 8. Grind 10-12 grains of black pepper and 10-12 grains of rice with water to make it a paste. Apply this paste on affected area of the head for 15-20 minutes. 9. Sugar powder 16 parts, Vamshalochana 8 parts, Pippali (long pepper) 4 parts, Ela (Cardamom) 2 parts, Cinnamon – 1 part. Make fine powder and mix it, keep in tight moisture free container. Take half teaspoon thrice daily with honey. 10. Aromatherapy- Pitta calming aromas typically flower fragnances like Lily, Cloves, Lotus, Lavender, Peppermint, Rose, Sandalwood are beneficial. 11. According to ayurveda Virechan (Laxative therapy) is an effective way to reduce excess pitta. Castor oil or warm milk with ghee or triphla at bedtime is helpful. 12. Practicing meditation is highly recommended. 13. Morning and Evening walk followed by brisk exercise is recommended. 14. Avoid hard physical exertional exercises and aggresive sports competitions. 15. Avoid working for long hours continuously; take short breaks. Have a good night’s sleep (8hrs) in a dark room. D. Diet: ~~Apple, mango, papaya, cheeku, guava. ~~Salad 1hr before lunch, 1hr before dinner. ~~Buttermilk, boiled rice sauted with cinnamon, cumin seeds and garlic or asfoetida are good in the daytime. ~~Have warm and easily digestible foods, boiled and steamed vegetables, soups, vegetable juices, porridge, brown rice and whole-wheat flour. ~~Avoid yogurt, especially at night. ~~Avoid refined, oily, spicy, cold, sour foods (fermented, pickled) and stale food, aerated drinks. ~~Avoid coffee, tea, alcohol, smoking. ~~Avoid cheese, chocolate and wine. E. Yogasanas and Pranayama: Hastapadasana, Setu Bandhasana, Marjariasana, Paschimottanasana, Bhastrika and Anulom-Vilom Pranayama. NOTE: When suffering from a migraine attack: ~Lie down in a dark, quiet place & get some sleep. ~~Avoid eating. ~~Drink only water. ~~Apply hot or cold compresses. ~~ Consult doctor.

Hi sir/ madam. My father age was 53 and he has the sugar levels in fasting is 110.120 and after meals he has 160.180.One time I was seen 220 also. He idn't take any medicines. His sugar problem was diagnosed on past 6 months. It is compulsory to use any medicines to him or not.

Lybrate-user, if fasting blood glucose is 126 mg and more, ppbs 200 mg and more and hba1c % 6.5 and more, then it is confirmed diabetes. Only in that case drug treatment is required. So get his current complete blood check up for diabetes. If above criteria are met, then treatment is needed. Otherwise diet control and regular exercise as well as weight control will help. But it appears he is over weight. His ideal body weight should be about 64 kgs. Thanks.

Goodmorning, I would like you take the advice of hot and cold fermentation for your calf and foot first. Wait for 2 days after which you could do a mild stretching of calf for 10 to 15 seconds. If pain still persists then plase do a tens treatment (physio session) for your leg. That will reduce a lot of pain in your leg. Then do a couple of ankle toe movements and then rotation for your foot. At night when you are sleeping you could also elevate your leg so that there is better flow of blood in your leg.

Dear Doctor I am 59 years old, Diabetic and Hypertensive. I am on medication since last 4 years and follow the medications as below For BP - Tazloc H 40 mg For Diabetic: Glycomet GP2 Tenali 20 mg The problem is during afternoons I almost become lifeless. I get a feeling that the whole body has shrunk and no strength in hands and legs which makes my work very lethargic. Some times feel drowsy also On observation my Morning BP reading is 130/90 but by after noon the reading is falling to 110/70 is it the reason for my condition or is it due to fall in sugar level which I am yet to check How do I improve my situation so that I can be more productive and enthusiastic through out the day.

Mr. lybrate-user, BP reading of 110/70 mm Hg, is in fact absolutely fine. That is unlikely to cause any problem. If a person's BP comes below 90 mm Hg Systolic and below 60 mm Hg diastolic it is referred as low BP. When you feel listless have you checked blood glucose level any time? It is a possibility that if blood glucose llevel goes down to 70 mg or lower a person with diabetes feels uneasy, listless, there may be blurring of vision, sweating, numbness and loss of strength. Even it can cause dizziness. If glucose goes below 50 mg and lower there may be unconsciousness. So please check glucose level when you have such a feeling. If that is the case, if it is happening repeatedly then we will have to look at your treatment and diet. Thanks.

Underlying cause of this is matter of concern as matter fact it is the field of dentist and it has to be seen by it only till then Povidone Iodine gargle can be used
