Hi, by improving your digestive system, you can increase your weight. 1. You must focus on getting the maximum nutrition out of the food that you are eating and digest that. To improve your digestive powers, you can take chitrakadi vati after meal and ashwagandha churna with water twice a day. 2. You can also have milk and milk products eg butter, ghee, etc along with banana shake.

Beware of the Processed Foods In The Market

Diploma in Dietetics, M.Sc. Food & Nutrition, B.Sc. Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Panchkula
Beware of the Processed Foods In The Market
With the flood of processed foods in the market and the recent controversy of lead found in noodles, it is a general concern which foods are safe to consume. Not all processed foods are really bad. But, what are processed foods?

Processed foods are packaged food items which have gone through a method of preservation to increase shelf life. This includes breads and cookies, along with protein and dairy products.

The good foods -
1) pasteurized milk - although processed to make it safe, pasteurized milk is free from any additives or preservatives and hence totally safe.
2) cheese - just like milk, cheese also goes through a process during its creation. However, looking at its health benefits, it is advised to keep them in your diet. However, cheese has high content of fat and sodium, so keep a watch on the amount you intake.
3) frozen foods-- these are actually better than fresh foods stored in a refrigerator, since foods meant to be frozen are proceeded immediately to be frozen, without much of environmental exposure which can degrade the food over time, even though refrigerated.

The bad foods -
1) sugar-rich foods - store bought foods with sugar are very harmful for health. Keep foods like yogurts, pasta sauces, savory snacks etc out of your diet as much as possible.
2) frozen entrees - even if they claim to be with low calories, frozen foods are not good for health. They have too much of preservatives, fillers and sodium, with hardly any'real food.
3) store bought baked goods - pre-baked cakes, cookies and muffins are easy to buy and eat but are not healthy options at all. They have ingredients which are at times unheard of and, unhealthy. Homemade baked goods are much healthier versions.
4) condiments - bottles sauces are packed with preservatives as they need to have long shelf life. They have an overdose of salt and sugar, making them extremely harmful for your health.
5) yoghurt - is a safe and healthy food if it is not flavoured with any sweetened fruit etc. Greek yoghurt, which is low in fat and high in protein, can be considered a healthy option.

If you have any further questions, ask me by clicking on'consult.

Knee Pain And Its Causes!

Knee Pain And Its Causes!

Knee pain is something that can affect anyone - irrespective of their age. While sometimes it may be of minor importance - and can easily be handled by self-care, often, lingering pain is a manifestation of some other serious underlying problem, such as arthritis. In this case, it is imperative that you consult a doctor and take appropriate measures to combat it.

Causes :

Arthritis: The chief cause of lingering knee pain, arthritis itself can be of a number of types:

  • Osteoarthritis, which is a result of deterioration of cartilages due to wear and tear
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis, an inflammatory chronic disorder
  • Septic Arthritis, causing pain, swelling and redness.
  • Gout caused due to the development of uric acid crystals in the joints

Fractures: These are caused by the breaking up of the kneecap due to falls or collisions.
ACL Injuries: Caused due to the tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (that connects the femur and the shinbone). Especially common in sportspersons such as footballers or basketball players.
Meniscus tears: The meniscus or the rubber-like cartilage (that acts as a shock absorber) can be torn by sudden jerks or excess pressure.

Symptoms:The major symptoms of knee pain include weakness, redness, instability, stiffness or the inability to properly straighten or move the leg. Often, a deformity is also visible, such as a bone sticking out of the leg - in which case it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately.

  • Possible risks: Factors which include the odds of being inflicted by knee pain and cause serious complications include :
  • Being overweight: This exponentially increases the stress or pressure that is applied on the knee joints - even in doing mundane tasks like walking up and down stairs.
  • Excessive physical activity: Some activities, such as sports apply excess stress on the knees as compared to other tasks.
  • Loss of muscle flexibility: Tightness or weakness in muscles causes increasing number of problems in the knees. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.

Hi lybrate-user More and more people are becoming victims to unhealthy living due to lack of time to completely focus on themselves. However, the best jobs or houses won’t mean anything if you aren’t in the best of health to enjoy the perks that come with them. Health is wealth, and if you don’t take proper care of yourself in the present, then there could be a problem for you in the long run. If you are looking for ways on how to maintain good health, there are three important things to look into. Eating healthy, eating well Nutrients- One of the most important ways to maintain good health is by eating well and eating the right food. This means consuming food that is filled with minerals, vitamins and all the other nutrients that are essential for the body. Some of the things you need to do include having a healthy breakfast, savor every bite and eat slowly and avoid in-between snacks. Fiber- To ensure you are getting the right nutrients increase your vegetable intake, add salads to your daily meals, and switch to a fruit for snacking instead of chips or other unhealthy snacks. For boosting your fiber consumption, opt for wholegrain, seeded or wholesome bread instead of white bread. You can also choose to add fruits to your breakfast cereal to make it more wholesome. Meats- Meat eaters who are looking to stay healthy without giving up their intake of meat should choose lean meat cuts and poultry. It is also advisable to trim off the skin and fat from the meat to keep it healthy. Additionally, you should also include healthy accompaniments with your meat like low fat yogurt, avocado, low fat margarine or mayonnaise. Remember to opt for monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats, and stay away from high fat meat products like bacon, salami, ham and sausages. Water- Along with eating the right foods, you should also look into your water consumption. Ensure you always have a bottle of water within your reach, whether you’re sitting at your work desk or travelling anywhere. You can also add some mint leaves or lemon juice to a jug of chilled water for added flavor if you like. Avoid- An important part of knowing how to maintain good health, is understanding what foods you should avoid. Sugar is one of those things that you need to avoid if you want to maintain healthy eating habits. You don’t have to completely cut out sugar from your diet, but you can gradually decrease your intake by reducing the amount of sugar in your tea or coffee, choosing diet sodas or drinks that do not have added sugar. When it comes to snacks, opt for fruits over chocolates, cakes and biscuits. Get your daily dose of exercise Another essential factor in knowing how to maintain good health is daily exercise. Whether it is walking, jogging, running, swimming or cycling, adding about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise to your daily routine can work wonders for your health. Not only does exercise help you shed weight and keep you fit but it also improves your lungs and heart health, reduces stress, decreases blood pressure and enhances flexibility, co-ordination and balance. While cardio workouts are great for reducing weight and toning muscles, they are not the only form of exercise you can choose. You can also opt for yoga or pilates, or for a more interesting take on exercise, sign up for dance classes. Dancing is a great way to keep fit and it can help you learn something new and meet people. To make exercising more fun, you can alternate between different forms of exercise, to prevent you from getting bored.

1. Keep a food diary. Chart what and when you eat every day for several weeks to learn about your eating habits and identify places to add calories. 2. Add it up. Try adding an extra 200+ calories a day in the beginning, and adjust up or down depending on results. 3.Focus on quality, not quantity. Even when you’re trying to gain weight, burgers, chips, and milkshakes all day (’err day) isn’t great for a body. Instead, choose nutrient-dense foods from all food groups.@Good options include whole grains like whole wheat pasta, fruits and vegetables, nuts, and lean protein. 4.Eat more frequently. And never skip meals! It’s easy to feel full fast when you start introducing more calories into each meal; changes in food intake might also bring on gastrointestinal issues and even acne. Make things easier on your belly by spreading calorie intake out over five to six smaller meals throughout the day. 5.Snack smart. Choose calorie-dense snacks like nuts, cheese, dried fruits, yogurt with granola, avocados, and pretzels or whole grain crackers with nut butters or hummus. If leaving the house for a while, pack snacks for calories-on-the-go. 6.Drink it down. Instead of diet soda and other low-cal drinks, choose filling, high-calorie beverages like smoothies, healthy shakes, or liquid meal replacements. Drink fluids in between meals to add calories and to avoid filling up on beverages during meals (which might make people eat less solid food). 7.Eat before bed. A lot of healing and regeneration happens while we sleep, so eating before bed can give your body the nutrients it needs to do the work. Nom down on a PB&J or a wrap with avocado, vegetables, and lean meat or cheese. 8.Set attainable goals. And remember to be patient. Just like weight loss, weight gain is a process—and often a slow one. Gaining might take years, so don’t give up hope if you don’t pack on immediate pounds. The rate at which a person needs to gain weight depends on their health goals and current health status, and a physician or nutritionist can help establish a reasonable goal weight. Signs of reaching an ideal weight include increased energy, stabilized hunger patterns, and overall good health. 9. Get support. It’s important to have a strong support system throughout the process of gaining weight, both to help gainers achieve their goals and to cope with the emotional issues that might arise from bodily changes. One of the best ways to adjust to changing size is to spend time noticing and appreciating how your “new” body appears in the mirror, says Greatist Expert and psychologist Ellen Langer. 10. Dress well. Don’t put off feeling good about your appearance. Talk nicely to yourself and choose outfits that make you feel good, no matter what you weigh.
