Hello, yes it is difficult and one has to be strong enough to loose weight. Everyone cannot do it, it requires hard work and self control. Everyday 45 minutes work out (cardio+weight lifting) healthy diet, more protein, oil /sugar should be minimum, no fast food. Three months and you will see your body starting to change.

Pay close attention to your food choice. ·        Eat less carbohydrate food sources like chapatti, rice, noodles, pasta, bread etc as they help in gaining weight and storing fat. ·        While having lunch or dinner eat vegetables and dal to fill your stomach rather eating lots of chapattis or rice. ·        Have a healthy breakfast like poha, idli, upma, plain dosa, oats, dalia or khichdi with vegetables. ·        Eat a balance diet including good quality proteins like: fish, lean chicken and eggs. If you are a vegetarian then include skimmed milk, low fat paneer, butter milk, soy bean or soy milk in your diet. ·        Avoid ghee, butter or vanaspati. Prepare your diet with vegetable oil like sunflower, safflower soybean or olive oil. ·        Eat plenty of salads. ·        Eat fresh fruits including apple, orange, pineapple, papaya, sweet lime, berries, guava, watermelon, mask melon etc. ·        Avoid eating outside junk and fried foods like pizza, pasta, roll, burgers, cakes, chocolates and cookies. ·        Have an early dinner. The earlier the better, giving your system more time to digest the food. ·        Avoid cold drinks/alcohol as they add empty calories to your diet. ·        Avoid fat enriched milk products like cheese, sweets, full fat cream etc. ·        Drink 3 liters of water in a day. ·        Try to have less sugar in food and beverages. ·        Try to drink 2 cups of green tea in a day as green tea helps in weight loss by aiding digestion. ·        Avoid red meat like mutton, beef, lamb or pork. ·        Eat sprouts or roasted chana, whenever you feel hungry.

Weight Loss - Can Surgery Help You?

MBBS, MS- General Surgery
General Surgeon,
Weight Loss - Can Surgery Help You?

Obesity is a serious problem that is on an exponential rise. The complications associated with the obesity are not only restricted to physical discomfort. There are many serious health complications and medical conditions such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia, Heart ailments and Infertility, that obesity might trigger. What is even more disturbing is the fact that India is considered to be the third largest obese country in the world. Not only this, there has been a steady increase in the percentage of teenagers and young adults suffering from obesity. Thus, it is important that every individual, irrespective of their age and sex should try and maintain a healthy body weight.

For an effective weight loss, one should first find out the underlying factor responsible for the obesity. While most people link obesity to unhealthy lifestyle habits and poor diet, the problem may also be an outcome of thyroid problems, hormonal imbalance, or diabetes, to name a few. While there may be many effective diet plans and weight loss programs to ensure fruitful results, surgery may come in handy when all other weight loss plans and programs end on a disappointing note.

When is surgery recommended?
The weight loss surgeries are often advised under the following situations
● People who put on weight in spite of having a low BMI (due to some medical conditions).
● People suffering from Morbid Obesity (in morbid obesity, the BMI of a person is found to be higher than 40).
● The other weight loss programs do not produce the desired results.

Most of the weight loss surgeries (such as the Laparoscopic Gastric Banding, Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Malabsorptive surgery) involve shrinking the size of the stomach by dividing it into two halves, a smaller upper portion, and a larger lower half. This is done to reduce the intake of food, thereby ensuring an effective weight loss.

  • In some other procedures, a part of the stomach may be surgically removed to reduce the size of the stomach (Sleeve Gastrectomy)
  • In Laparoscopic Malabsorption surgery, in addition to shrinking the size of the stomach, a large part of the intestine is bypassed so that there is minimal absorption of calories (from the intestine).

The different surgeries though impressive come with certain demerits.

  • Shrinking the size of the stomach may limit the intake of food, but there will also be less absorption of nutrients, which is essential for the body. As a result, a person may develop anemia or suffer from calcium deficiency disorders (such as osteoporosis).
  • Undergoing a surgery increases the risk of an infection at the site of the incision as well as blood loss (the laparoscopic surgeries which involve a small incision are an exception).
  • The surgeries alone cannot help in maintaining an ideal body weight. You have to lead a disciplined life. Eat a proper and balanced diet, follow a healthy lifestyle, and indulge in exercise and physical activities. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Surgeon.

Eat several mini-meals prescribed by a registered dietitian

If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you'll lose weight. But when you're hungry all the time, eating fewer calories can be a challenge. People who eat 4-5 meals or snacks per day are better able to control their appetite and weight.

It is recommended to divide your daily calories into 5-6 smaller meals or snacks and enjoying most of them earlier in the day , dinner should be the last time you eat.
The best diet is one which is healthy and well balanced with foods from all the food groups, and one which is varied and that you can stick to
Weight loss on some diets can be dramatic in the short term, but there's more of a chance of rebound weight gain. Set yourself a realistic target and aim to lose between (0.5-1.0kg) a week. I being a registered Dietitian strongly accommodate the patients own preferences without the patient feeling that they are on a diet not compromising the weight management goals.
I will also prescribe medicines that will speed up the time to achieve your weight management goals. Do reply back for private consultation.

Sir I gave a baby birth in Feb month and it was a second caesarian. I have a big tummy and full of fat in my stomach....
It will take some effort for you to flatten your tummy. I am outlining a 21 day plan for you. If you follow this plan sincerely then you will see a noticeable difference in just 21 days. There are 5 things that you need to do: 1. Eliminate all refined sugars from your diet. This means no sugar in your tea/coffee/milk, no consumption of sugary beverages like coke, pepsi and total elimination of all snacks like biscuits, cakes, sweet dishes. I know it is difficult but remember that you just have to adhere to this for 21 days. If you wish to snack you can have unsalted peanuts, dry fruits, seeds or yogurt. 2. When you get up in the morning, put your pillow aside and lie with your back straight. Put both your legs together and lift them so your legs are at a 30 degree angle with the bed. Maintain this pose of 5 minutes. Keep breathing while your legs are in the air. 3. Eliminate dinner altogether. In place of dinner have a bowl of papaya. You can have a small bowl of yogurt with black salt if you are not able to control your urge. 4. Keep hydrated through out the day. You need to drink at least 10 glasses of water every day. Tea/coffee are not substitutes of water. Minimize consumption of milk. Add raw vegetables to each meal. 5. One 500mg tablet of calcium d-glucarate and one tablet of b-complex every day. If you miss even one of the steps mentioned above during your 21 day regime then you have to start all over again from day 1. Please bear in mind that it takes 21 consecutive days of performing all the above mentioned steps for the stomach muscles to start toning up.

Our daily energy requirements for proper functioning of our body is 1600-2200 k cal of energy if we want to remain fit and healthy. But there is a misconception that weight is reduced by dieting. But weight is not reduced by only skipping our meals or prohibition from sugars but until we are not aware what are our body energy requirements, it will be difficult to loose weight. If we restrict ourself from taking daily diet to 1100-1200 kcalories, and increases our workouts, only then we can think about reducing our weight and for that we must obtain proper knowledge of exact energy levels in a particular dish we are eating, only then we can achieve our target of reducing weight by means of simple mathematical calculation. Start your day with lemon juice This is one of the best therapies to eliminate belly fat. Pinch some yellow juice into a glass of warm water and add some salt to it. Continue drinking this every morning to boost your metabolism and to get rid of that paunch. Stay off from white rice Replace white rice with various wheat products. Include brown rice, brown bread, wholegrains, oats and quinoa in your diet. Avoid sugary substances Stay away from sweets, sweetened drinks and foods rich in oil. Consuming these foods can increase body fat around various areas of your body like abdomen and thighs. Drink plenty of water If you want to get rid of your belly, then drink sufficient amount of water every day. Drinking water, after regular intervals will help to boost your metabolism and remove toxins from your body. Eat raw garlic Chew two to three cloves of garlic every morning, and drink a glass of lemon water after that. This treatment will double up your weight loss process and make your blood circulation smooth in your body. Avoid non-veg food To eliminate belly fat, it is recommended that one should avoid non-vegetarian food as far as possible. Load up on fruits and vegetables Eat a bowl of fruits daily in the morning and evening. This will fill you up with many antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Spice up your cooking Use spices like cinnamon, ginger and black pepper in your cooking. These spices are loaded with health benefits. They help to improve your insulin resistance and reduce levels of sugar in your blood. Or you can follow ketogenic diet.

Hi I am 23 my weight is 80 kg and my lower part of body is too heavy and I am also depressed what should I do.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Hi I am 23 my weight is 80 kg and my lower part of body is too heavy and I am also depressed what should I do.
YOu have to reduce the total weight and lower part will also become less heavy .If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.

1. Avoid all snacks and commercial products with sugar in them - biscuits, cakes, bournvita, horlicks, coke, pepsi, energy drinks, sweetened yogurt etc. 2. Cut down on your daily intake of tea/coffee and maintain it at 3-4 cups a day. 3. Try to add little sugar to any beverage (coffee, tea, milk, lemon water etc.) that you have and ideally you should refrain from adding any sugar altogether. 4. If you have a sitting job then ensure that you do not sit for more than 30 minutes at one stretch. Get up and move a little after every 30 minutes. 5. Try to work out for 20 minutes each day. You do not necessarily have to go to the gym. You can incorporate some pretty powerful exercises in your daily routine like - squats, skipping, surya namaskar and core exercises. 6. Do not eat for 3 hours before you go to sleep. Eating before going to bed is one of the main cause of rapid weight gain. 7. I am a 46 year old regular (4 days a week) weight resistance training lover. I have been lifting heavy weights over the past 20 years. But over the past 8 years I have observed that I get too tired (or say loss of stamina) quickly and have to take long rest periods between sets to recover. My body weight has been stable over the past 8-10 years. I want to loose fat but stay bulky with heavy muscles. Though all these years I have stayed away from any drugs or steroids I strongly feel the urge to start taking either deca durabolin or testesterone injections to boost my stamina and lost libido. I promise that I won't abuse or overuse them. But at the same time I am not aware how much qty, frequency or cycle should be taken and which one would be better deca durabolin or testesterone. What is the best time to use them?

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
General Physician, Delhi
Dear , what do you exactly want to know? how to use steroids or how to increase stamina and lose weight? for the first part in my opinion it is a strict no to any kind of steroids. Steroids are extremely harmful in the long run. Please read about iatrogenic cushing syndrome to understand what future you are staring at. Secondly since you do gymming regularly you must know that there are two kind of muscle fibres the red fires and white fibres. Similarly there are two types of exercises resistance training and aerobic exercise. Resistance training exercises the red fibres and it will give you strength and bulk aerobic training like swimming cycling and long runs will train your white muscle fibres and give you stamina. Ideally a good exercise regimen should be a balance of the two. Lastly about the weight issue. Do you eat chicken. When you wash the raw chicken have you noticed how the fat floats and the muscle sinks. That is muscle is heavier than fat so your weight is not because of the fat buy because of the muscle. However it is better that you can get your fat %analysed to determine the exact value. Hope that this will help.

I am 47 years old and weigh 118 kgs with 5 feet 1 inch height. What should do for obesity.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Weight reduction can be achieved only by reducing the intake of food 1/3 of what you take now. Some tips 1) drink three or four cups of water whenever you feel hungry and just before eating food 2) take boiled or raw vegetable like cucumber, carrot etc. As half of your diet. Then take ? of your total as sprouted pulses / proteinaceous food like roti, cooked pulses and remaining with rice or other carbohydrates. Oil or ghee etc. Should be just bare minimum. The most important is to burn off the energy intake by exercises. There is no short cut or medicines without exercise. The food we eat is utilised for our energy needs and the remaining will be stored as fat which leads to obesity. It is better to do some tests.
