I smoke about 4-5 cigarettes per day. How much probability of having lung cancer.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
It's difficult to calculate the probability, there are some risk calculators available but it's actually difficult to exactly predict as there may be other confounding factors like pollution, environmental factors, occupational hazards, genetic factors. Smoking is not only related to lung cancer but it may lead to head and neck cancer, gastrointestinal, bladder etc.

What is the symptoms of colon cancer? Please inform how l can we suspect it may be coln cancer?

Registrar in Surgical Oncology, Fellowship in Gynaecologic Oncology, Masters In Advanced Oncology, Fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery, Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Oncology, Fellowship in CRS and HIPEC, Fellowship in PIPAC
Oncologist, Mumbai
Cancer unfortunately doesn't have trademark symptoms. They can often be vague. However the common symptoms related to colon cancers include persistent low hemoglobin, dark stools (malena), occasionally bleed per rectum if the cancer is in rectum, alteration of bowel habits. That means having alternating constipation and diarrhoea. It's however not a hard and fast rule that if you have these symptoms that means you have cancer. It just means there is an increased probability. If you have any doubts, you can do something call faecal occult blood test (fobt) or faecal immunohistochemical test (fit), which again are around 90% percent accurate.

I have a lump in my left breast since 3years but the mammography doesn't show anything and the report also says that everything is normal. What it can be?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
I have a lump in my left breast since 3years but the mammography doesn't show anything and the report also says that ...
You should get sonography of the breast as well to be more clear about the lump. Mammography may not pick up the lump sometimes. Even if sonography does not pick it up, then it is likely to be fibroadenosis which is mostly related to hormonal changes or edema because of some injury.

Lump discovered please help Hi, I have never had a lump in my breast before I'm 24 years old and I'm worried. The lump is on the same side as where I had an abscess removed recently. It's red and inflamed on the outside and tender to touch. Wondering what it could be, thanks x.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
If the lump is red and tender it is most likely breast abscess. Abscess needs to be immediately drained. If they r occurring again and again, means you need to get sugar tested.

Can You Prevent Ovarian Cancer?

DGO, DNB Gynecology), MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Can You Prevent Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer is the most common cancer to affect the female reproductive system. The exact cause of ovarian cancer is not yet known and the risk factors involved are numerous, the most prevalent of which are genetic defects and hereditary problems.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are not always clear and range from pelvic and abdominal pains to irregularities in the menstrual cycle. Women beyond the age of 50 are most at risk of developing this type of cancer and the risk factor increases in case of family history.

Prevention of  Ovarian Cancer

There is no sure shot way of preventing ovarian cancer. Some factors such as genetics cannot be controlled at all. There are, however, ways to take precaution against it through some simple lifestyle choices. A few of those ways are as follows:

Eat a healthy balanced diet which is rich in all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that the body requires for boosting and maintaining immunity.

Exercise regularly and stay active. Maintaining fitness is an important aspect of preventing the onset of all sorts of diseases and disorders.

Go for frequent health checkups and make regular consultations with your gynaecologist so as to ensure early detection of the problem.

Another notable way of avoiding ovarian cancer is taking birth control pills which are known to reduce the risk levels. However, studies have shown that there are other health risks associated with taking birth control pills and hence you should always consult a gynaecologist for a proper prescription.

Hello Kamil, I think take second opinion from an expert. Specially skin specialist, I don't think you should worry about it. There could be a solution. By worrying you will add on stress, best is to take an expert advice, and be calm about it. Regards Stuti

Can I continue to use complementary therapies, take herbal remedies or vitamin supplements when I'm on chemotherapy?

MBBS, DNB, Diploma Dyslipidemia, CCEBDM, CCMTD
General Physician, Gurgaon
Lybrate-user regarding complementary and herbal therapies with chemotherapy it is still a grey zone. You should understand that allopathic medicines comes with years of research and trials, only after that they are allowed to be used in patients. Whereas these complementary therapies are just by the word of mouth. There is no proven evidence behind their efficacy. Yes vitamin supplements when taken with proper advice can be benificial. I hope I clear my point with this. Decision is entirely yours. Will still suggest to continue with chemotherapy religiously as advised with full faith and you will do well.

Ayurveda and Oral Cavity Cancer

Ayurveda and Oral Cavity Cancer

The oral cavity consists of the lips, gums, teeth, cheeks (buccal mucosa), the frontal 66% of the tongue, the hard top of the mouth (hard palate), the floor of the mouth beneath the tongue and the region behind the wisdom teeth (retromolar trigone). Development of oropharyngeal cancer occurs in the region of the throat behind the mouth, called the oropharynx. The oropharynx starts where the oral depression closes.

The World Health Organization states that oral cancer ranks eleventh in terms of the common cancer around the world. It is commonly found in men and its spread is slightly higher in developing countries. Excessive consumption of alcohol and tobacco contributes to around 90% of oral cavity cancer cases.
Cancerous oral growth is dealt with procedures which are similar to treatments of different cancers i.e. with the assistance of surgery followed by radiation treatment. In radiation treatments, patients may need to manage the various side effects. Specialists at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) along with the Regional Cancer Centre in Kerala have made a mouthwash utilizing herbal substances, as recommended in Ayurveda, which can help in diminishing the intense amount of pain in patients experiencing radiation therapy for oral cancer.

Other important Ayurvedic remedies may entail the following:

  1. Lemon: A deficiency of vitamin C is experienced in the body once you are diagnosed with oral cancer. Therefore, consuming fresh lemon juice, which is rich in vitamin C, around 3 to 4 times a day, is very helpful
  2. Carrots: Carrots are rich in 'beta-carotene' which is considered to be an anti-cancer nutrient. It is recommended for patients suffering from oral cancer since it is a source of antioxidants. Consumption of at least 1 glass of carrot juice per day helps in fighting this form of cancer.
  3. Grape Seed: The seeds of the grapefruit are rich in antioxidants which help to destroy the radical cells. These radical cells damage the cells present in the mouth, thus causing oral cancer. The vitamin E, C and beta-carotene present in grapes strengthen the immunity system. The grapes should be crushed to form a paste and the liquid should be strained to form a juice. Consume this juice 3-4 times in a day.
  4. Bitter gourd: It is rich in alpha eleostearic acid, which helps in elimination of cancerous cells without affecting the normal ones.

I have chest tumor in nipple very hard. This is not pain but I have in very depression this about. What is treatment.

MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Kanpur
If you r of 19 years age then a nodule in breast most probably is gynecomastia. You may get a fnac done of that nodule to confirm the diagnosis. If it is indeed gynecomastia then no need to worry about although for cosmetic reasons it may be removed surgically.

Before 1 week my uncle was admitted in hospital because of brain tumour and it was cancerous he had the operation there and it was successful but the doctor was saying that he can't live anymore only 3-4 months he is having and he is going for chemotherapy, is there any way to save his life ,so that he can live more.

MBBS, MD - Radiothrapy
Oncologist, Delhi
Hi lybrate-user With the details you gave, most probably your uncle is having glioblastoma. After surgery, radiation should be given to the region of brain where tumour was located. This is the internationally recommended treatment. Alongwith radiation he should have an oral tablet of chemotherapy daily. Despite treatment the average survival observed in our hospital in such cases is around 20 months.

I had noticed blood traces at the beginning urination about one month back. I carried out a blood urine examination it said PSA as 7.69, Further scanning showed prostate is of normal size. I took ciplox 500 for a month and retestedt PSA and the result showed 7.67. The doctor said that a biopsy is needed. Since I am 74 years old, I don't intend to go for biopsy. If I leave it as is, will there be any complication later? Is there any medication available for high PSA?

Yes, go in for the biopsy. If a pathological specimen confirms the benign nature of the growth then you should not be worried. Medications usually help and if the psa is high even after surgery you may have to go in for a whole body scan. There may be other foci in the system that may be elevating the psa and this is called as false positive. I hope this helps.

I am 34 years old active smoker. Want to know early symptoms of throat cancer. Any quick test to rule out the same.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Sore, ulceration which are long standing, lump in neck, bleeding from throat or mouth. Difficulty in swallowing, breathing etc. Throat pain esp radiating to ears. Some premalignant conditions like white patch, leukoplakia, reddish patch, erythroplakia, reduced mouth opening etc need evaluation. A detailed oral and neck examination and laryngoscopy can help you ruling out cancer.
