Actually you are suffering from hypothyroidism. You should be taking thyroid hormone replacement. Your weight seems alright. If your thyroid remains uncontrolled you can have difficulty in conceiving and also higher chances of abortion. Even if you conceive and don't take treatment baby's brain may be affected. So you should be taking medicine regularly.

Sir/mam my mother is diabetic and she is passing black stools from last 1 month. And is not associated with other symptoms like pain and all. She is taking oral hypoglycemic drugs. Is it serious?

Black stools could be due to bleeding in the gut (gastro intestinal tract - like esophagus, stomach, intestines). It could also be due to medication like iron supplements. Oral hypoglycemic drugs do not necessarily cause black stools. I would advise you to consult a good gastroenterologist. She needs to have a thorough assessment and she may have a gastroscopy and colonoscopy and further investigations like CT scan etc to know the cause of the black stool. Thank you.

My wife suffering from thyroid since last 3 yrs. Feeling tired many times and gaining weight. What should I do.

M.sc Food & Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
My wife suffering from thyroid since last 3 yrs. Feeling tired many times and gaining weight. What should I do.
Being a dietitian my views: there is no single diet chart for everyone. To plan a specific diet we do collect lot of information like height, weight, food frequency, digestive history, medical history, likes, dislike, lifestyle, eating habits. Remember one thing to follow a diet it should be personalized according to person's body type and not generalized. Starting with there is no pills or powder or shake which can help you to lose weight in a healthy way. To lose weight eat an hour within walking up and dinner at least 2 hours before you sleep. Avoiding eating anything after dinner. Breakfast should be your king size have good complex carbohydrates and protein rich. Eat every 2 hours small frequent meal do help in weight loss. And do not overeat. One can come to ideal body weight with few lifestyle modification. Have green tea only 2 cups a day. For exercise I would say diet plays 80 % role and exercise plays 20 % role in losing weight. Personal advise on gym. You should not make your body habituated with machines rather do simple walk or surya namaskar or planks. So only with healthy eating one can lose weight.

Tinnitus may be related diabetes related hearing nerve weakness. You need to get tested by ent surgeon and if required some hearing tests need to be done. You may require a hearing aid which solves the problem of tinnitus also.

This is the right time to add drugs to manage diabetes when only diet restrictions fail to control blood sugar. Start exercise too.

Will a person with Type 2 diabetes under control end up with the need for insulin?

Will a person with Type 2 diabetes under control end up with the need for insulin?
Depends on prognosis. However this possibility can be averted if herbal support is taken parallel to current regime.

Dear Doctor, It has been 3.6 year to our marriage and we are trying for a baby since last two year and from last eight month we are consulting with Gyno, in our initial test my wife is diagnosed with hypothyroid (TSH Level 5.255) so our doctor prescribed us Thyronorm 12.5 mgc. Again after 3 month we did TSH test and this time TSH level has been decreased to 4.861. Meanwhile she asked us for several test which includes: Semen Analysis, follicular studies and HSG however she never asked for FSG test. Each of these test are normal. After 6 month we again did TSH test and this time TSH level has been increased to 7.442. After that, I have taken consultation from other doctor and she asked us to do AMH and TB Gold test. Here my concern is no one is giving importance to TSH level and asking for different test however as per my research TSH level should be in 1 to 2 range to get pregnant successfully. So, isn't doctor should focus on thyroid treatment before going for other test. It would be very helpful for us if you can provide us your valuable comments on this. Also could you please suggest correct does of Thyronorm.

Mr. lybrate-user, It is possible that the doctors want to first confirm if any of the other hormonal deficiency are existing, which may be a hinderance in getting pregnant. I do agree with your observation that TSH value should have been looked at by at least one of those doctors. It is essential to bring it <2 to get conception. Plus American Thyroid Association recommends levels in the range of 0.1 to 2 mU/L before conception and similar values to be maintained during pregnancy so as to ensure proper fetal brain development in first 3 to 4 weeks and later part of pregnancy for proper growth. Thanks.

Artificial sweeteners are a group of chemicls each having a different problem. nut the bottom line is this that they are chemicals. Now a days natural sugar by itself is being considered as poison. Any thing in excess is not good. if you are a diabetic you should count your calories. More cups of tea means notonly more sugar but more calories.

Mr. lybrate-user, If your wife's blood glucose control is good then there is really no need to take any other medicine than the present treatment. Unfortunately the propganda being made about so called research product is a big hoax. That product is just a combination of some herbal ingredients based on ancient texts. The clinical trials are also not well conducted. In Ayurveda or other alternate medical practices there is really no drug treatment available for diabetes, even though a lot of claims are made including curing of the condition. If any one had actually found out a cure for diabetes he or she would get a Nobel prize. If you want to take IME - (tablet, do not stop current treatment, that tablet can be added as a supportive therapy. Thanks.

My friend has hyperthyroidism. Her age is 22. She is not married yet. If she get married is there any chance of getting pregnant. Now her reports was normal. She taking medicines also. Can she stop taking medicine if reports were normal.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Vanajaji, the disorders related thyroid both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are not curable. They can only be controlled. Hypothyroidism is controlled by taking thyroxine tablets for life time. In case of hyperthyroidism, anti - thyroid drugs like neo - mercazole are usually used of 18 to 24 months, if hyperactivity is reduced or controlled then drug is stopped. Normal activity may remain for some time. If again hyper activity is resumed, then radio active iodine or surgery are the other options looked at. If thyroid activity is well controlled then getting conception and completing the preganncy normally is quite possible. If you have any doubts do come back. Thanks for the question.
