I was operated for Papillary thyroid carcinoma and doing good now, currently on Eltroxin 200 mcg. I am looking for a good Antioxidant supplement which has below properties and Which can be used for long term: 1.Kills Microbes in body 2.Strength Immune system. 3.Which alkaline body 4.Which can keep all organs healthy. Please suggest a name of Good supplement. Regards.

BHMS
Homeopath, Barabanki
Dear lybrate-user Don't expect miracles. Remember antioxidants don't kill microbes, They don't give immunity For immunity and killing microbes body has its own system. Since you just recovered out of papillary thyroid carcinoma it's better you avoid experimenting with antioxidants. Antioxidants are useful but for those who are not sick. Final piece of advice; you want to gain good health; follow your physician advice or ask him to refer you to good dietitian and instead of gogelling about your disease, focus on your new life.

I am suffering from Thyroid disease since 3 years and Initially my Condition was in HYPOTHYROID and I have used THYRONORM 25 mcg for 3 months and I stopped using medicine. But now I tested and result is HYPERTHYROID. What should I do. Should I go for Homeopathy or English medicine. Because Thyroid is a chronic disease and if I use English medicine for long time does it show side effects.

Mr. Lybrate-user, please give the details of your thyroid test results, because it is usually unlikely that hypothyroidism will turn in to hyperthyroidism. Most often hyperthyroidism after either surgery or use of radio active iodine leads to hypothyroidism. Both these conditions are related to secretion of the hormone thyroxine, only treatment is to either supplement the hormone in case of deficiency and use anti thyroid drugs in case of excess. Other branches of medicine will not be able to treat those conditions. Choice is yours.

Pay close attention to your food choice. ·        Eat less carbohydrate food sources like chapatti, rice, noodles, pasta, bread etc as they help in gaining weight and storing fat. ·        While having lunch or dinner eat vegetables and dal to fill your stomach rather eating lots of chapattis or rice. ·        Have a healthy breakfast like poha, idli, upma, plain dosa, oats, dalia or khichdi with vegetables. ·        Eat a balance diet including good quality proteins like: fish, lean chicken and eggs. If you are a vegetarian then include skimmed milk, low fat paneer, butter milk, soy bean or soy milk in your diet. ·        Avoid ghee, butter or vanaspati. Prepare your diet with vegetable oil like sunflower, safflower soybean or olive oil. ·        Eat plenty of salads. ·        Eat fresh fruits including apple, orange, pineapple, papaya, sweet lime, berries, guava, watermelon, mask melon etc. ·        Avoid eating outside junk and fried foods like pizza, pasta, roll, burgers, cakes, chocolates and cookies. ·        Have an early dinner. The earlier the better, giving your system more time to digest the food. ·        Avoid cold drinks/alcohol as they add empty calories to your diet. ·        Avoid fat enriched milk products like cheese, sweets, full fat cream etc. ·        Drink 3 liters of water in a day. ·        Try to have less sugar in food and beverages. ·        Try to drink 2 cups of green tea in a day as green tea helps in weight loss by aiding digestion. ·        Avoid red meat like mutton, beef, lamb or pork. ·        Eat sprouts or roasted chana, whenever you feel hungry.

Eye Problems Caused by Diabetes

FRCS, MD - Ophthalmology , MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Eye Problems Caused by Diabetes

If you have got diabetes, then it is quite natural that you will soon face acute eye troubles. This is the reason diabetic patients are always suggested to keep their blood sugar levels controlled so that eye troubles can be easily avoided. Thorough medical check-up is required in order to detect conditions of the eyes. Some of the commonest eye troubles occurring due to diabetes are cataract, glaucoma, blurry vision, diabetic retinopathy and others.

List of eye diseases caused by diabetes:

  1. Diabetic Retinopathy: When the retina's smallest blood vessels get severely damaged due to increased blood sugar, then this kind of eye condition occurs. Early detection of this eye condition can save your eyes, but if it is too late, then nothing can be done, and it might even lead to blindness.
  2. Cataract: Fogging or clouding condition can bring this kind of condition and this can only be corrected by wearing proper corrective lenses.  However, if you fail to control diabetes, then in spite of wearing glasses, your eye condition might get deteriorated day-by-day. Glared or blurred vision is the most common symptom in this regard.
  3. Glaucoma: When the eye fluid is not drained properly, then this kind of eye trouble occurs. In fact, eye pressure increases to a great extent as a result of which delicate eye nerves can get severely damaged. The blood vessels of the eyes can get clogged causing greater interruption in vision. Medicines can make aqueous humor to get drained in a proper manner, and thus you should go for a proper eye check-up so that you can acquire the requisite medicines. Some popular symptoms of glaucoma are headaches, eye aches, blurred vision, watery eyes, vision loss and others.
  4. Diabetic macular edema:  This eye disease mainly occurs in the advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy. Macula is nothing, but the most delicate part of retina and when it gets swollen, then you might face this eye trouble. Only medications can help you to get rid of the same and thus immediate medical help is needed.
  5. Blurry vision: Though this is quite a small and temporary eye issue for diabetic patients, but this condition might turn into a serious one if you neglect to correct the same in the very beginning. You might even face blindness due to negligence of this trouble. Also, fluctuating sugar-levels should be stabilized so that this kind of trouble can be easily tackled.

Causes of Infertility & Risks Involved

Causes of Infertility & Risks Involved

Infertility is a condition where a couple, trying to conceive in a natural way is not able to do so even after one year of trying. So here are the causes and risks for this condition.

Causes: There are many causes of infertility. It may be due to a condition present in one or both partners. As per a medical study, 20% of the cases of infertility are due to males, while 40% to 50% cases are due to problems in the female partner. 30% of the cases suffer from infertility due to problems in both males and females. Ovulation and fertilisation are the main elements of the conception process and any condition in the female or male can upset either function, which can make it difficult to conceive.

While abnormal sperm production and transport may be a common condition that leads to infertility in males, other factors like side effects of cancer treatments and too much exposure to toxins and chemicals can also play an important role in this regard. For females, the causes of infertility may range from ovulation disorders, uterine and fibroid tumours, uterine and cervical anomalies.

Risks: There are a number of factors that put a male or a female at risk of infertility. Being in your mid 30s usually has an adverse effect on the ovulation and production of well functioning sperm. Further, smoking and tobacco are among the main causes of infertility in either partner.

Excessive alcohol consumption may also lead to this problem. Being overweight or underweight can also make a person infertile. Further, not getting enough exercise and routine activities out of your day, can lead to this condition as well. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

Hello doctor, I am 25 yrs old, single. My weight is 80 and my height is 158 cms. From 5 yrs I have thyroid and have been using medicines i. E thyronorm 50mg. My tsh is normal and from 4 yrs my weight is same, whatever I do am not able to reduce my weight. I do proper diet and exercise with cosultation of dietician. What is the problem and how should I reduce my weight?

Post Doctoral Fellowship in G I Surgery, MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Panchkula
You need to loose weight. To do that one has to persist with a drastic reduction in the intake of carbohydrates, (specially refined sugars) and fats, increase intake of proteins and increase the expenditure of energy by regular exercise. Starving ones self does not work for any length of time and three meals at regular times, eaten slowly is the best method. Avoid snacking between meals, have a good breakfast, moderate lunch and a light dinner. The foods to avoid are sugars, or anything that contains sugar and fat such as bakery products, ice creams, desserts, fried foods (like pranthe, pakore, puris) pizza and potatoes. Rice can be replaced with two chapattis made of multi grain atta. To fill your stomach one should take lots of fruits (papaya, apples, guava) and green vegetables (cucumber, ghia, laoki, teenda, and tori) and sprouted dal. Milk should be double toned. The protein intake should be increased by taking egg white, cooking should be in small amounts of olive / sunflower oil. Vegetarians can use soya bean dal, nutri nuggets and cottage cheese made from double tone milk. The best exercise is jogging or brisk walking for at least 45 minutes, five days a week.

Feeling weak is a symptom of thyroid as the metabolism is very disturbed. Besides the medicine she is taking, its important that she takes a healthy diet and try to lose weight if she is over weight. Walk should be a part of daily routine and lifestyle change should be targeted on.

Reduce your oil/ghee intake, reduce fried items and non-veg foods. Avoid starchy foods like potato, rice, etc. Increase your fiber intake by increasing your green leafy vegetables. Fish, flax seeds, citrus fruits, sprouts will all help in reducing your cholesterol.

Hi I have hyper thyroid and I'm unable to control weight gain. Please help me out by giving me a diet plan.
lybrate-user, Please clarify whether you have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, because weight gain is seen in hypothyroid ism. It wold have been better if thyroid assay results were mentioned. Unless that is clear, no opinion can be given. There is no special diet needed. What is required is to reduce the intake based on ideal body weight - 52 kgs X 25 calories = 1300 calories per day. Avoid sweets, deep fried food, pastries and bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks and fructose corn syrup containing products. Consume more of green leafy vegetables and salads as well as fruits. Thanks.

Hello, taking right dose of insulin is the best way to control fasting and pp sugar. Even if after taking insulin, pp sugar goes high, you can try tab. Vobit 0.2mg one after food twice daily to control pp sugar. Check fasting sugar after seven days to find control.

For a diabetic patient under medicine, fasting 128/pp 180 and hba1c indicates reasonable good control. Continue medicine and adhere strictly to diabetic diet. Get your blood sugar (fasting&pp) examined 3 monthly and hba1c 6 monthly and consult diabetologist for advice and treatment.

Normal Uric acid levels are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL (female) and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL (male) Some diets that are rich in purine end up causing an increased production of uric acid. In other cases, it may be due to a completely sedentary lifestyle. Less intake of water also may be to blame in some cases as water plays an important role in washing out the excess of the uric acid. Regular usage of some medicines also cause the uric acid levels to rise. Another important factor is being overweight as obese people are much more likely to get gout as compared to those who have normal weight. It is a tragedy of the modern world that the superior advertising and marketing power of the allopathic system of medicine has eclipsed the good and genuine work of Homeopathy. This is largely because Homeopathic system of medicine cannot compete with the money power of Allopathy. Just because allopathy does not have any cure for gout, patients tend to think that there is no cure for gout at all. People are not aware of the great work that Homeopathy can do in the cure of gout. I cannot stress enough here that homeopathic medicines are pretty effective at curing the acute as well as the chronic gout You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It is really good to see that you have been able to reduce weight to 80 kgs, and hence been able to bring down the blood glucose level and HbA1c% down. To answer your question whether diabetes is cured, can only be answered if you stop the treatment that is now on for a few days, then check the blood glucose levels. If levels (FBG & PP) remain normal then we can probably say that there is no more diabetes. Thanks.
