Open Heart Surgery - What Should You Expect?

One of the crucial types of surgery is the heart surgery, which is commonly known as the bypass. It is a type of surgery in which the chest is cut, and surgery is done on valves, muscles, and heart arteries. As per the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, it is one of the most common types of surgeries, which is performed on adults. During this surgery, the prime focus is to remove the blockage from the heart so that fresh blood can easily flow into the heart. No doubt that this process is critical, but it is easily true that after the surgery you have to take extra care of yourself.

Talking of which, here are certain things that you can expect after the surgery.

  1. Moved To ICU: The moment, the surgery is done, you will be moved to the Intensive Care Unit where the person’s health conditions will be monitored, vital signs will be checked, and medical professional will frequently visit to make sure that the patient is just doing fine. Once the surgery is over, you may not wake up quickly, but you will continue to breathe through the breathing tube. About food, of course, you will not be allowed to take solid food, but there is an intravenous (IV) needle will be put in a blood vessel in your chest and arm from which you will be given fluids.
  2. Recovery At Home: Once you are given the discharge, your focus should be to get recovered quickly. Recovery at home entirely depends on the heart problem for which the surgery was done. Of course, the doctor will give you necessary instructions with regards to healing incision, dealing with after effect is and understanding the signs of complications. Follow up the medicines and attend the appointments as advised to keep track of your health condition. You may face some after effects such as appetite loss, constipation and sleeping problem. If there is any complication, make sure you speak with a doctor about the same immediately.
  3. Ongoing Care Is Important Too: Once the surgery is over, as said, you will have to go for frequent checkup with your doctor. During these visits, your doctor will tell you to get blood, stress test and electrocardiogram done, which will assess the working condition of the heart. You might also be given few blood-thinning medicine and bring certain changes in lifestyle and medicine.

There are certain phases of recovery which will take time eventually. The first phase is the lengthy one that can last for around 6-8 weeks. Once you get a discharge from the hospital, you will be given instructions that you must follow with good care. This will pace up the healing process and make the process better.

The effectiveness of Ayurvedic medicine in treating diabetes is well documented. The efficacy of herbs widely recommended in Ayurvedic texts for normalizing the blood sugar level has been validated in several clinical trials. In Ayurveda, diabetes mellitus is known as Madhu meha. Owing to the adverse effect of high blood sugar on nearly every vital organ of the body, diabetes is referred to as ?maharoga? or the major disease in Ayurveda.Ayurvedic medicine for diabetes contain herbs that help to lower the blood sugar level by regulating metabolism of carbohydrates, regulating sugar absorption, stimulating insulin secretion and improving sensitivity to the hormone insulin. Gymnema Sylvestre (Gurmar) Gymnema sylvestre is an effective hypoglycemic component in Ayurvedic medicines for diabetes. The common name of the herb is Gurmar, which means the sugar crusher. The efficacy of Gymnema sylvestre leaves in reducing the blood sugar level has been demonstrated in experimental and clinical studies. Treatment with the herb helps to lower the fasting blood sugar level. By assisting regeneration of the residual pancreatic beta cells, it reduces dependence on insulin medications. Coccinia Indica Coccinia indica is a powerful anti-diabetic agent. By regulating breakdown of starch, it helps to prevent sudden surge of blood sugar after consuming carbohydrates. It could also protect the vital organs from the adverse effect of high blood sugar level.

1. I am taking amloz at for blood pressure. Can I take any other medicine (cheaper) inlieu of this medicine. Please advice. 2. I am a case of obesity (approx 125 kgs) can you suggest some weight loss medicines.

General Physician (AM)
Alternative Medicine Specialist, Chandigarh
Tonicard (homeo) for weight loss; 1. Whole-grain bread. Research shows that people who follow a weight-loss program incorporating whole-grain breads, cereals, and other foods lose more body fat from the abdominal area than those who eat only refined-grain foods, like white bread and rice. 2. Low-fat milk and yogurt. Scientists have found that the more calcium in fat cells, the more fat those cells will burn. In one study, two groups of overweight mice were put on a restricted-calorie diet, but one also got calcium supplements. The no-calcium mice lost 8 percent of their body fat, compared to 42 percent among the mice that did get calcium. 3. Lean protein. Good sources of protein, such as lean meats, eggs, and beans, help keep your blood sugar stable. The result you will feel full longer and get a boost in energy and that will help you burn more belly fat. Consult me in private for detailed treatment.

If you are consuming your cooking oil in form of refined oil immediately stop consuming it and switch to sarso oil or cow ghee secondly make sure that the patient is walking at least 60 minutes in morning and after the walk of 60 minutes do 30 minutes yoga regularly if you want a healthy lifestyle otherwise the complications will only increase. Do not consume excess of salt and make sure that the salt which you are consuming is not iodized salt, only consume rock salt which is also known as sendha namak. For making your heart healthy give patient 300 millilitres of bottle gourd juice everyday you can also add 2 tablespoon ginger 2 tablespoon coriander 2 tablespoon shyam tulsi and 2 tablespoon mint juice in it, if given this juice after 60 minutes of walj regularly for 3 months then I take guarantee the patient will never have any heart problem for the next 30 years for more details and better treatment consult me privately.

With your symptoms as described I feel that her medication is not being given adequately. Get a home bp monitor and check her bp every 6 hourly when she is relaxing for atleast 1/2 hour. Then with bp readings and her present medication chart revert back. We can address her headache better.

Dear Lybrate User, *Avoid meat, eggs, table salt, pickles, tea and coffee. *Avoid smoking as it increases heart rate. *Increase use of garlic, lemon, parsley, Indian gooseberry (amla), watermelon, grapefruit, skim milk and cottage cheese. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to lower blood pressure; brisk walking, jogging, swimming and athletics are good options. Laughter is the best medicine, as it relieves stress and anxiety, which are the main causes of high blood pressure in today’s lifestyle.

First thing, quit smoking, by throwing your cigarette pack. Get your bp, lipid profile checked. We need to know your exact weight. A good nutritious diet cannot negate the ill effects of smoking.

Im having four times more testosterones, sonography reports are normal, periods are regular but im having excessive hair growth on my face and body. What maybe yhe reason then. Pls suggest any tests or natural ways to balance hormones.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Good to know that your periods are regular as this is the first proof that there is balance between male and female hormones in your body, testosterone is a male hormone present in small amounts in all women, similarly some feminine hormones are present in males but balance is maintained by nature. You must have got tested to know that you have 4 times the normal testosterone. Ultrasound is normal. My suggestion is get tested just after period, the time every hormone is minimal, same way it is highest, just before periods. Your worry is excessive hair on face and body. You need cosmetic treatment, both home remedies and removal of hair by waxing etc. Drink more water and exercise, take less fats. Do not take estrogens to counter testosterones because once the balance is spoiled by giving artificial hormones, it becomes difficult to bring back the balance. You can take evecare syrup by himalaya, just 2 spoons per day.

I am having a minor chest pain on my right side since few days. I smoke. ANd just after smoking I get an instant cough for once or twice and sometimes I feel a bit weak and lazy. What can be done to overcome this problem sir or madam whomever addressed.

Cardiologist, Ahmedabad
Occasional pain on right side not relayed to exertion is probably non cardiac origin. Smoking at this young age can reduce your life span considerably. You are exposing yourself to the risk of heart attack, lung cancer, copd and many more diseases. All though your current medical problem might not be serious at present smoking can land you in serious trouble 10-20 years down the line.
