I am 62 years old and a glaucoma patient and using eye drops asopt and travatan daily for the last 3 years. I feel very weak and depressed. Is it due to the eye drops or something else. I do not have bp or sugar.

Phaco Development Program, Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology, DNB Ophtalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Mysore
Neither of the drugs you are using (azopt or travatan) have depression as a side effect. It is unlikely that your depression is due to eye medication. Consult a psychiatrist please.

Nailbiting - 7 Harmful Effects of it!

Nailbiting - 7 Harmful Effects of it!

Many people bite nails when they are anxious or stressed. However, knowing its harmful effects will only increase their anxiety and stress. About 30% of children, 45% of teenagers and 25% of young adults have the habit of biting their nails. Nail biting is one habit which sets in due to various reasons and just continues due to nervousness, boredom, frustration or stress. People tend to unconsciously bite their nails and over a period of time, it becomes very difficult to get rid of the habit.

A good understanding of the harmful effects of biting nails, to the overall health and oral health, can be a good starting point to quitting the habit. The harmful effects of nail biting on oral health effects are listed below:

  1. Source of infection: The fingernails are more difficult to clean than the fingers and the rest of the hand. Therefore, there is a good amount of bacteria residing there, which get into your mouth and your stomach when you bite nails. The next time you wonder why your stomach is upset, take a good look at your nails.
  2. Tooth chipping: The enamel is thinnest at the tip of the front teeth. When biting nails, there is a constant pressure on this thin enamel which can chip after a certain point of time. Another way that a tooth chips is because of the pressure when biting a nail. The tooth can hit hard on the opposing tooth, leading to a fracture or chipping.
  3. Altered shape of the teeth: In many cases, the front teeth appear worn off or are squared. This is because there is always pressure on the teeth from the nails.
  4. Induce gap between the front teeth: When nail biting continues for years at a stretch, the two front teeth can develop a gap between them.
  5. Tooth sensitivity: With the enamel wearing off, the dentin is exposed and this can cause tooth sensitivity in many people.
  6. Joint problems: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) near the ears helps in opening and closing the mouth. Constant pressure on the joint due to nail biting leads to inflammation of the joint which can cause ear ache, headaches, improper closing of the jaw and clicking sounds.
  7. Delay treatment with braces: A person with braces with a nail biting habit will have very bad consequences. There is pressure from both the braces and the biting. This could also lead to the failure to correct the misaligned teeth.

How to manage this habit?

  1. Identify the root cause of the habit
  2. Identify alternate ways to manage stress (exercise, yoga, hobby, etc.)
  3. A nail polish that has a bitter or offensive taste or smell
  4. Well manicured and painted nails, which you won’t feel like biting
  5. Get family and friends to remind or chide you, whichever works. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dentist.

Hello Doctor I am 55 year old. Before 1 years I had multiple Hepatic Cysts in my left liver. After that I continued medicine. But now after ultrasound I found there is hepatomegaly with grade 1 fatty change. And also last time my cyst size was 45×48 mm but now its enlarged to 63×52 mm. Is there any problem or is this recuerd by surgery? Thank you.

Hello Doctor

Hepatic cysts in usg can be classified in two broad categories - simple or complex cysts. Simple hepatic cysts in liver with increasing in size of 1 cm over 1 year is not a problem. Complex cysts with increasing size of both liver and cyst - warrants further investigation. Grade I fatty change is seen in 60 - 75 % of the population - no need to get panic for this. Suggestion- I would suggest to do contrast enhanced ct (cect - triple phase abdomen) if not / mri liver. Since we do not know whether hepatic cyst is simple / complex.

Sir, There are a few things I request you to guide me out about. I have just had my first sex with a 16 year old girl last Wednesday. I wish your guidance on following things: 1) About last year I used to go to gym and one day I had forgotten to wear the supporters. As a result of that my balls (testicles) had sagged of that day badly due to which I immediately stopped going to gym as I was really scared. My balls have become quite normal but a little amount of sagging still remains. Sir, I wish to ask you if this will ever become normal. Also will it effect my sex capacity and size of erection? At present I have a normal erection of 6 inches. Is this sagging a serious issue? Do I need to contact a doctor? 2) The other thing is related to girl I had sex with. Her vagina had bled that day during our encounter and I know its normal. But now it has become sore and its hurting her. She is still unable to walk properly. I had trimmed both her and mine pubic hair before sex. Her vagina is still hurting her. She didn't even allow me for sex next day due to pain. Sir is it normal thing or is it something serious? Has it happened because I was inexperienced and did not do it properly? Kindly guide me on this matter. 3) the next thing I wish to ask you is about protection sir. I had ejaculated inside her. We didn't have pill at that moment but I got it for her next day. please tell me what is probability of getting her pregnant? Also these how effective these contraceptive are? Do they have any side effect. How frequently should I give it to her. 4) There is one more thing I wish to ask sir. Is it safe to drink urine? They showed it in porn movies and I really want to try it on her. I wish to know if it is safe or not. Sir kindly give me your expert advise on following things. I am really scared a bit about few things and have no one to go to for guidance. Thanking you
