Hlw sir, I am suffering from a kidney stone of 4.7 mm and other is small one .Actually I am getting pain at side of my abdomen and lower of it also .Even I thinks that I am getting pain in my side muscles below the abdomen which join vagina? Is this also the pain of stone ?kindly suggestion m and also tell me how can I relief from it.

Homeopath, Delhi
Hi lybrate-user yes that pain can also be due to kidney stone if its in the lower abdo. Drink plenty of water and avoid vegetables or fruits with seeds eg tomato seeds, pomegranate, brinjal etc. For the pain and removal of the stone you can take homoeopathic treatment as it does not have any side effects and also it relieves the symptoms caused due to stone. For consultation revert back. Take care.

Tips for removing kidney stones: 1. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, cold drinks, pickles, fish, poultry, meat, spinach, and chocolate. 2. Avoid sour, heavy, and dry food. 3. Increase intake of liquids like water, juice, soup, lime water lemon soda etc. 4. Be sure to drink enough water each day. Usually 1 to 2 liters of water per day is adequate. 5. Drink more if you are perspiring heavily, working outdoors, the weather is hot, etc. 6. Increase the use of barley, horse gram (a type of bean), ginger, and brown rice or parboiled rice. 7. Avoid suppressing urges to urinate and defecate. 9. Boil 10-12 basil leaves in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes. Mix 1 teaspoon of honey in it and take twice a day. 2 tab neeri twice daily with water.

I have no symptoms. My prostate is 27.7 gm and post void urine is 47cc. I have no symptoms. I am 25 years old. And Doctor said it is normal. What is the normal size of prostate at my age?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
A normal prostate gland is about 3-4cm long and about 3-5cm in width, so this one sounds about the right size. The parenchyma is the tissue that makes up the gland, and it is also pretty normal, since the echoes are all uniform. That means there are not spots where the ultrasound shows it to be thicker or thinner than it should be. The bladder was was physiologically distended, meaning it was enlarged due to it's normal function- it was holding urine. A post void scan is done after the man empties his bladder, and in this case, there was approximately 30 mil of urine that did not empty. That's no so unusual, and anything under 50 ml doesn't raise any eyebrows. In men over the age of around 60 or so you can see anywhere between 50 and 100ml of urine retained. It's a common side effect of a gentleman with benign prostatic hypertrophy. In this case though, it doesn't look like they found anything that is disturbing or abnormal. The normal prostate size for an adult male is 15cc to 30cc (one half ounce to one ounce). Men whose prostate gland is larger than 30 cc are more likely to be diagnosed with either benign hyperplasia (enlargement) or prostate cancer than those whose prostate is in the normal range.

My radiologist told me that I have subtle increase in cortical echogenicty in both kidneys which may be a start of a possible medical renal disease. However he said this may be physiological in thin patients as I am thin with 23 years male. He advised me to have KFT done. In KFT report I have everything normal except alkaline Phosphatase which is 140 U/L (Normal range given by lab 30-120 ). Is something to worry? Ps. Also I have very low vitamin 25-hydroxy serum (15.11 nmol/L).

After having sex or masturbation in night, next morning 1st urine will come in" start & stop" manner. It means, it starts then stop then again start and then again stop, like this 2-3 times. And body feels like that there is less force in body to throw urine out of the body. What is the reason?

General Physician, Mumbai
Stop Mastubation because it will lead to psychatric disturbance in near future and reason for your problems- there would have been obstruction in the urine pathway

Dear lybrate-user Thanks for sharing your concern. If may be due to dryness of vaginal passage which causes friction and bleeding or may be a urine infection. Initially for 15 days you could use KY jelly or vaseline to lubricate, thoda may reduce bleeding after sex. If blood is still present then consult Gynae for further test and urine culture.

It may be worm infestation or a fissure or piles or fistula. It will require a physical examination by a general surgeon to establish the diagnosis. Antibiotics may be unnecessary and even harmful without a proper diagnosis. Anal problems improve with general measures but may require surgery. The general measures I would suggest are 1. Take lot of vegetables & fruits in your diet 2. Avoid chillies & spices 3. Take lot of fluids 4. Avoid constipation 5 periodically do anal exercises (alternately contracting & relaxing the buttocks, anal area & upper thighs) 6. Take sitz bath 3-4 times a day. This means sitting in a tub of warm water & doing anal exercises 7. Atleast once get it examined by a general surgeon.

My husband suffers from kidney stone. Stone size is approx 90 mm. What kind of treatment suppose to take? please suggest. Also suggest diet.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Panchkula
The size of the kidney stone must be 9 mm. The kidney stones can be treated successfully. The diet should be strict with low fats and the fruits and vegetables eaten should be seedless. E.g. Disacrd the seeds of guava, tomatoes, brinjal, etc. Mushrooms, kaddu, cauliflower, black grapes, chikoo, spinach, etc. Should be avoided or taken in very less less quantity. He should consume lots of water daily. Not all the kidney stones are alike, there treatment is diffeent. There location in the kidney (upper/ middle/ lower part) is also imporatent for the purpose of treatment. So home remedies and treatment of the renal stone will work on the type of the stone. Though Pattharchat juice/ patta ajwain - 10 mL should be taken daily two times empty stomach. Refrain from alcohol.

If patient is having kidney stones and that is lack of calcium n having bone pain so wat should b done can prefer calcium tablets.

Felllow in Endourology, MCh Urology, MRCS, MS, MBBS
Dear sir, if both problems are present simultaneously, then it is important to evaluate properly before treating. For kidney stones, a 24 hour urine metabolic work up including calcium, uric acid, phosphorus, sodium, oxalate, citrate, magnesium and creatinine is done to rule out hypercalciuria. Then specific treatment for kidney stones can be started based on the results. Bone pain needs to be evaluated with dexa scan. Unless there is osteopenia or osteoporosis, there is no need to give calcium supplements. Finally even if calcium is required, it is preferable to give calcium citrate for stone patients. Most importantly, it should be give along with meals so that the calcium binds with oxalate in food and is excreted as calcium oxalate in stools. Hope I have answered your query, best regards,

Anal Fissures - Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Anal fissures are the small tears formed in the anal lining. They are also known as anal ulcers. An anal fissure causes a lot of pain and bleeding during your bowel movements. Usually a fissure heals automatically in a few days time. It can be treated with simple home remedies as well.

  1. You can suffer from an anal fissure if you pass hard and large stools.
  2. Also strained childbirth or suffering from violent spells of diarrhea might get you an anal fissure.
  3. Chronic constipation may also be cause of a fissure.
  4. Other rare causes may be anal cancer, HIV, tuberculosis or herpes.

Individuals of all age groups can suffer from anal fissures. It is not a very serious problem and heals on its own in a few weeks. Although it can heal itself, there are certain treatments which can help relieve the pain you get from an anal fissure.

An anal fissure has quite a lot of symptoms for you to understand what you are suffering from:

  1. There will be a very visible tear around the anal region. You will be able to spot the tear on the skin very easily.
  2. A small lump of skin may form next to the tear.
  3. When you will be undergoing your bowel movements, you will feel a very sharp pain in the anal region.
  4. You will find spots of blood on the stool passed.
  5. You will also feel a burning or an itching sensation in the anal region.

Although most fissures do not require treatment, there are a few remedies that will help cure them faster:

  1. Stool softeners: You get certain medicines at the chemist, which are known for their stool softening functions. These stool softeners help to soften the hard stools and initiates smooth bowel movements.
  2. Eat fibrous foods: Eat foods rich in fiber like fruits, whole grain cereals, raw vegetables, etc.
  3. Take warm baths: Take a bath in warm water as it relaxes your anal muscles, helps to relieve irritation in the region, and increases blood flow in the anorectal region.
  4. Use ointment: Apply nitroglycerin ointments and topical pain relievers to promote blood flow to the anal region and to relieve discomfort from the region respectively. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

5 Ways to Keep Your Kidneys Active

5 Ways to Keep Your Kidneys Active
Kidneys work aggressively day and night - this pair is responsible for all the cleaning - Waste Removal from your body.

Check out how you can keep your pair of kidneys functional right until you need them:

1) Increase Fluid Intake: No.1 reason for kidney stones/problems is not drinking enough water. When your fluid intake is low, it puts extra work load on the kidneys to pass toxins. Similarly excessive alcohol intake leads to dehydration and puts pressure on your kidneys making them age earlier.

2) Cut Back On Salt: Salt is anti-kidneys. If you have any chronic problem, try to aim for less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day.

3) Empty Your Bladder: Do not keep urine stored in bladder for too long. It majorly affects the functioning of kidneys.

4) Check On Chronic Problems: Manage your diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease well. These have direct impact on Kidneys, esp. Your cholesterol levels, sugar levels and blood pressure. Having high cholesterol, especially if you have diabetes, puts you more at risk for kidney disease, heart disease and stroke.

5) Balance your Physical Health: Keep your body active to keep organs such as kidneys in good functioning. Do at least 15 min of cardio exercises daily. Also, get sufficient rest for your body.
