Ayurveda is based on the philosophy that health is a result of the balance between three basic elements in the body, also known as tridoshas. These are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The imbalance between these leads to various diseases. Arthritis and spondylitis, both being bone issues, is due to the formation of a substance known as ‘ama’ which are a kind of toxins. The theory behind treating joint issues is to rid the body of ama. This is done by a combination of diet, massage, and home remedies which can help control severity and progression of symptoms.

Home remedies:
Regular detoxifying the body using ginger and/or black pepper with the meal goes a long way in detoxifying the body, which also eliminates ama from the body.

  1. A tablespoon of turmeric can be boiled in milk and consumed daily
  2. Avoid foods which can induce constipation. This can be by increasing the number of fibres and reducing processed and refined foods like maida.
  3. Include herbs which have great healing powers and have been used over centuries
  4. Store water overnight in a copper vessel and drink it in the morning. The trace minerals which get absorbed do wonders for your joints.
  5. Castor oil, either a spoonful or mixed with warm milk helps in curing arthritis and spondylitis pains.
  6. Nutritional changes like the use of aloe vera and amla juices are very beneficial for the joints. These are rich in vitamin C and help build immunity too.
  7. Supplements like bone support capsules and calcium complex have traces of essential micronutrients which improves overall bone health and immunity. They are useful in controlling pain from arthritis and spondylitis.
  8. Herbs like guggul, ashwagandha, ginger, and nirgundi oil are also used since ages to help reduce bone pain.

Monsoon is a season that brings respite from the sweltering heat and ushers in joy. But at the same time the season also brings along diseases and a threat to the skin and hair. However, all it requires is a little effort from your part to keep your skin glowing and healthy. Some of these are- 

  1. Wash your Face Daily: The pores of your skin tend to get clogged with dirt and pollutants during monsoon causing the outbreak of pimples and rashes. Therefore it is imperative to wash your face two to three times a day to avert these eruptions. You can also use a toner in case you have dry skin to keep the pores clean.
  2. Use Moisturizer: Though using a moisturizer is almost always associated with winter, it is equally important to use it during monsoon especially during the nights. Night is the time when the skin tries to repair itself on its own, therefore applying moisturizer helps in averting the wrinkles and maintains the glow of the skin.
  3. Exfoliation of the Skin: Monsoon is the time when your skin requires the most pampering therefore an exfoliation at least once in every week will help you to keep the dead cells away, consequently helping you to keep your skin glowing and soft.
  4. Apply Sunscreen: Similar to a moisturizer, a sunscreen is a product whose benefits are strictly associated with summer. But that is not rather should not be the case. During monsoon, even though the rays of the sun may not seem harsh, it can as well damage your skin; therefore applying a sunscreen should be something you must not miss.
  5. Eat Green Vegetables: Your skin reflects not only the benefits of the cosmetic products that you apply on it, but also what you eat. Eating oily and junk products show their mark on the skin sooner than later, therefore the trick is to stay away from them and indulge in green vegetables. Your skin will inevitably show the benefits soon.
  6. Eat Fruits: The benefits of eating green vegetables and fruits go hand in hand. Rich in antioxidants, fruits help in maintaining the luster of your skin.
  7. Drink Lots of Water: Water has plenty of advantages and it takes care of the skin, health as well as hair. Drinking plenty of water during monsoon takes care of the skin and keeps the glow.

You need to take a balanced diet with good protein contents in that. Along with it you should do muscle workout under proper supervision to build a good muscular body. You can do stretching exercises it can sometimes help in increasing height even at your age.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice Avoid spicy, oily and sour foods. Eat fresh, unprocessed food. Increase the use of herbs that have cooling effects on the body like fennel, coriander seeds, Indian gooseberry (amla) and aloe vera. Increase intake of water to about 8-10 glasses per day. Wash your face frequently with mild herbal soaps. Avoid irritant cosmetics. Do not squeeze the acne lesions. Home Remedies Prepare a powdered mixture of coriander seeds, fennel, basil, turmeric and Indian gooseberry (amla) in equal parts. Take ½ teaspoon of this powder 15 minutes before lunch and dinner. Have 1 teaspoon of powdered Indian gooseberry fruit (amla) in morning and evening with water. Take one teaspoon of coriander juice mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder. Drink twice daily. Hi am 31 years old female I have thyroid since last year was taking Thyronorm 25 MG and had recently check my tsh is 1.830 along with cbc of blood test. In which my RBC COUNT 4.95 and RDW-CV 14.3 was slightly high as it shows in a report. Sapanaji, Thanks for the query. For hypothyroidism only treatment is to take adequate dose of levothyroxine tablets and maintain TSH with in normal limit. Your present TSH level is good. As regards CBC, there is no real problem, you seem to have a bit less RBCs. For that you should take iron supplement tablets. Thanks.

Hip Osteoarthritis - Know Everything About It!

When joints get inflamed, it is known as arthritis. This causes swelling and pain in the joints of your body such as the hips and the knees. When the cartilage gets damaged at the ends of bones, a type of arthritis called osteoarthritis occurs.

There are two main types of osteoarthritis:

  1. Primary: This type is more generalized. It affects the knees, fingers, hips, spine and thumb.
  2. Secondary: This type can occur after injury or joint inflammation, or as a result of any disease that affects the ligament's composition, like hemochromatosis.

How is the hip affected by osteoarthritis?
Patients have difficulties walking if they have hip osteoarthritis. Diagnosing hip osteoarthritis is difficult. It is because the pain appears in varied locations, such as the groin, buttocks, knee or thigh. The pain can be a dull throb or can be sharp and stabbing. The hip is usually stiff.

What are the causes of hip osteoarthritis?
The causes of hip osteoarthritis are unknown. However, the factors that can lead to osteoarthritis are joint injury, excessive weight and rising age.
Along with the abovementioned factors, the following may contribute as well:

  1. The joints may not have developed accurately
  2. The cartilage may have inherited the defects
  3. If the joints are too irritated due to added pressure on them, like excess body weight or stressful activities that include hip movement, osteoarthritis may develop.

What are the symptoms of hip osteoarthritis?
The symptoms of hip osteoarthritis are as follows:

  1. Joints feel stiff when you get out of bed
  2. Joints feel stiff if you have been sitting for some time
  3. The joints feel painful, swollen or tender
  4. You can hear (a "crunching" sound) or feel the bones rubbing against each other.
  5. You find yourself unable to do certain things, like putting on socks, as it requires your hips to move.

How is hip osteoarthritis treated?
The main objective of treatment is to restore the patient's ability to move around. A part of this objective includes correcting the function of the hip and managing the pain. The treatment can include:

  1. Joint care and rest
  2. To take weight off the area affected, a cane is used
  3. Pain relief that does not involve drugs
  4. Shedding excess weight
  5. Exercising
  6. Surgery
  7. Alternative and complementary therapies

Hi I understand your concern completely .But first thing that stops us in losing weight is stress so do not take stress. Take it as a task to be accomplished in next 6 months and go for it step wise. Take care of following things 1. Water intake 2 to 3 litres daily 2.sleep for 8 hours 3.eat good breakfast and very light dinner 4.exercise daily for 30 minutes 5.Be active the whole day 6 .No smoking or drinking. Arhiji, Thanks for the query. To bring down TSH levels to normal it takes at least 6 weeks after starting the treatment with adequate dose of Levothyroxine. When on treatment TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L. At that level all the symptoms of hypothyroidism are in check. However, if you want to conceive, then it is essential to maintain TSH level closer to 2 mU/L. Further, during pregnancy TSH should be maintained as follows: 1st Trimester: 0.1 to 2.5 mU/l, 2nd Trimester: 0.2 to 3.0 mU/L & 3rd Trimester: 0.3 to 3.0 mU/l. These levels should be critically adhered to. As lack of thyroxine affects fetal brain development in the first 28 days, later, fetal growth also depends on adequate Thyroxine plus the desired outcome of pregnancy. Thanks.

Hi Lybrate-user, Tanning is a common problem with Indian skin as we have less tendency to have a skin burn and our skin is rich in eumelanin. You can increase your intake of vitamin A (beta carotene), vitamin C and antioxidant rich food. These can be found in foods like papaya, mango, walnuts, tomatoes, lime, oranges, green tea. I would suggest you avoid sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm. The right way to apply sunscreen is 1 tsp for face, one for each hand, 2.5 tsp for each arm 5 tsp for back. And you need to repeat it every 3 hours irrespective of the spf of the sunscreen. Also you need to focus more on boot star rating or PA index of sunscreen as the UVA is responsible for tanning.

The treatment might vary from few lightening creams, compression, silicon treatment, superficial dermabrasion, dermarolling, fat grafting to the scar revision surgeries. Your wife may be suffering from tinea cruris which is fungal infection of the inner thighs and buttocks area. It can be treated by taking four to six weeks of anti fungal treatment which includes tablets along with creams. Do not use soap over that area. Mistreatment with over the counter Steroid containing creams like fourderm, panderm, quadriderm, hh zole, candid b etc lead to repeated case of recurrence and also side effects due to application.
