A cough is probably one of the most common respiratory diseases that people suffer from. In most cases, it is nothing to worry about and can be cured with cough suppressants and salt water gargles. However, coughing of blood is a serious problem. The coughing up of blood that originates from below the level of the larynx is known as hemoptysis. This can vary in terms of severity depending on the amount of blood being expelled. This disease is a common condition, but on an average, less than 5% of hemoptysis cases are life threatening.
Hemoptysis rarely affects children. The symptoms of this condition include:
Sudden onset of a cough with bloody phlegm
Chest pain: Medical attention should be sought in cases where this condition recurs often, if it lasts for longer than a fortnight or if the volume of blood expectorated is more than 30ml per day. The various tools that help in the diagnosis of this condition are:
Chest radiography: This imaging modality helps lateralize bleeding and understand the amount of lung involvement. It is quick, inexpensive and can also help detect other underlying abnormalities.
Bronchoscopy: This involves the insertions of a rigid or flexible endoscope into the bronchial passages to check the airways and determine active bleeding sites.
Oral antibiotics are usually the first stage of treatment for this condition. Smokers will also be urged to quit cigarettes as this can worsen their condition. Treatment for minor hemoptysis may also include:
- Oral hemostatics
- Cough suppressants
- Radiation of laser treatment
- Therapeutic bronchoscopy
In its later stages, hemoptysis can be treated with a minimally invasive procedure known as endovascular embolization or with surgery. In some cases, endovascular embolization may also be sued to stabilise the patient before surgery. This procedure reduces the pressure in the hypertrophic arterial blood vessels and decreases the risk of perioperative bleeding.
Hemoptysis is also one of the most common complaints of lung cancer patients. Depending on the stage of cancer and the amount of blood expectorated, treatment in some cases may not be possible. In such cases, a parenteral opioid and fast-acting benzodiazepine may be administered.

This actually aggravates the problem instead of solving it; can result in severe anxiety and depression. Withdrawal symptoms might result in anxiety, depression, irritation and loneliness. This disorder can lead to complications such as dry eyes, headaches, change in sleep patterns and subsequent problems in falling asleep. Back pain from sitting upright while you are on the internet is also very common problem.

I am not getting a good doctor to treat my asthmatic mother who is not able to breathe properly. She is breathing through mouth and wheezing. All done but day by day her conditions are getting worse. Can anyone suggest a good doctor?
Respected doctor ,let me describe my treatment my my problem. Dandruff ndd I had oily scalp which resulted in greasy hair (which is worst after 2 days of washing) So derm gave me fluconazole 200 mg and. Salisia kt alternate days. K.but as I have to apply salisia majorly to the scalp for being effective I'm not able to apply it bcz y hair is greasy so salisia gets applied to the hair so I have to apply more of it. So now what are you doing first I apply normal Patanjali shampoo and then I apply medicated shampoo after using the normal one ok but this has led to issue that my hair becomes dry and my scalp is also oily so is this the correct way to use .plz help I find this rinse and repeat shampoo a bit problematic as it dries the hair and oily scalp should I wash my hair daily with normal shampoo and use medicated shampoo on alternate days till 1 month please help I am bit tensed thank you.
In lipid test results HDL Cholesterol --- 34 triglycerides -- 205 LDL Cholesterol --- 75 VLDL Cholesterol --- 40.94 I am 63 years old having diabetes, BP & Diabetic Nephro CKD. Now I have done the lipid test, The results are as above. Pl suggest treatment to maintain cholesterol.

- Amla or Indian gooseberries: This herb is associated with a number of health benefits and can help lower cholesterol, hypertension and help stabilize blood circulation. To use amla in the treatment of high blood pressure, crush and extract the juice of 4-5 amlas and have 2 teaspoons of this juice mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey every morning. This also strengthens the digestive system and prevents the build up of toxins inside the body.
- Yoga: Yoga asanas can also help stabilize the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and thus regulate blood pressure. To treat high blood pressure, begin by sitting in the Siddhasana posture and practising the Anjali Mudra. This helps reduce stress and anxiety. Follow this by the Supta Padangusthasana and then the Matsya Kridasana. Simple anulom vilom and other such breathing exercises can also help lower high blood pressure.
