Osteoarthritis Pain - Symptoms and Causes of OA Pain!!

What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis in relation to the different affected areas?

An osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis which means unexpected inflammation of the joints/muscles, which is usually very painful. This form of arthritis is not curable, and the only thing that you can do is to take measures to reduce the painful effects of the condition. The symptoms of the medical condition often occur gradually and are chronic and long lasting in nature. Some of the body parts that get affected easily are:

  • Hips- pain is felt in the groin area or buttocks at the hip joint.
  • Fingers- bony growths at the edge of joints can cause fingers to become swollen, tender and red. There may be a pain at the base of the thumb.
  • Knees- a 'grating' or 'scraping' sensation occurs when moving the knee.
  • Feet- pain and tenderness are felt in the large joint at the base of the big toe. There may be swelling in ankles or toes.

Some of the most common symptoms which are more common to all body parts are as follows:

  • Chronic painThe arthritis related pain is very intense and chronic in nature, and it has an ever increasing trend if proper care is not taken. This pain can appear in any body joint of a person and it can cause visible inflammation or swelling in and around the muscles of that particular joint.
  • Body stiffness - Another characteristic feature of this medical disorder is that there is stiffness in the normal movement of the joints and muscles. This symptom also results in a lack of flexibility of the concerned person.
  • Inflammation and tenderness - Osteoarthritis is such a condition which is observable by the naked eye, as it shows signs like inflammation and tenderness. Inflammation can be noticed if a joint has a considerable amount of swelling.

Hi doctor, I am a 30 year old married female. Before 2 year, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I have been taking Thyronorm 75 mcg. Or Shall I reduce the mcg? When will my thyroid levels become normal. Hair fall also increasing.

Hi doctor,
I am a 30 year old married female. Before 2 year, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I have been taking ...
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. TSH 0.87 mU/L, is within the normal range. Which means your present dosage of thyroxine is working very well. There is no reason to alter the dosage. All the symptoms related to hypothyroidism are in check when TSH is within the desired range. But hair fall takes more time to stop. Please do not alter or reduce the dose. Thanks.

Type - 2 Diabetes can be easily managed with right food and you can get off-medication. You should stop consuming these things: 1. Milk products - milk and all kinds of milk products 2. Refined products - like white sugar, refined oil, refined wheat flour, Indian sweets and fried snacks 3. Packed foods - anything that is made in a factory like biscuits, bread, salty snacks, supplement powders etc. Just by doing this, you will observe great improvement in your sugar levels. Also you need to add: 1. 3 types of fruits in breakfast 2. 3 types of salad/veggies before lunch & dinner (not with meals but before meals)

4 Types of Life Threatening Rashes You Should Not Ignore!

Dermatologist, Chennai
4 Types of Life Threatening Rashes You Should Not Ignore!

Rashes are common skin problems but shouldn't be taken casually at all. Although most rashes are mild and do not create much problem, some might turn grow to become life-threatening.

These are:

1. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) -
This skin rash is the result of a severe allergic reaction to medication. The condition affects the skin and mucous membranes. Various medicines, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anticonvulsants, penicillin, and sulphonamides might trigger this type of rash. It is characterized by painful lesions emerging in clusters.

2. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) - Mostly affecting babies and young children under the age of five, this skin disease brings on extensive blisters with red skin that looks burnt or scalded. This syndrome is caused by infection with strains of Staphylococcus bacteria.

3. Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) - This unusual autoimmune skin condition gives rise to excruciating blisters on the skin, which often go on to the mouth, throat, nose and even genitals. The open sores from this disease often lead to infections and acute cases can even cause lung infections and lesions. This rash has no cure but is often treated with corticosteroids, antibiotics or immunosuppressants. If untreated, it can even cause death.

4. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) - TSS is often caused by an overgrowth of Staphylococcus bacteria with the infection spreading throughout the body. Besides these bacteria, infections from surgical wounds contaminated nasal packing after nasal surgery and infections after baby birth are probable causes. This life-threatening rash generally affects teens and young adults, most of them being women. It can affect mucus membranes of mouth and eyes although there are no blisters or skin bumps. One can experience slight dizziness and high fever as well as swelling of the joints and eyelids. This skin condition often affects the liver, kidneys, the heart, and the brain.

Apart from these, there are several other types of skin infections, which can be equally discomforting and critical. Toxic epidermal necrolysis, dermatitis herpetiformis, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis and several other nasty skin diseases are cases in point.

Few Things You Need To Know About Anetoderma!

MBBS, MD-SKIN
Dermatologist, Ahmedabad
Few Things You Need To Know About Anetoderma!

Healthy skin is one that stays taut and firm. Anetoderma is a rare benign condition where the dermis loses elastic tissue. This results in the formation of a depression in the skin or flaccid skin. This condition is also known as macular atrophy, anetoderma maculosa, and atrophia maculosa cutis. Anetoderma is not contagious.

Women are at a higher risk of suffering from this condition than men. It usually affects people in their late teens and early twenties. Premature babies born with a very low birth weight are also susceptible to this condition. In rare cases, it can run in the family and affect identical twins.

Depending on how it is triggered, there are two types of Anetoderma; primary and secondary. Both forms of this condition may be associated with systemic diseases that include infections like leprosy, HIV and lyme disease, inflammatory or autoimmune conditions and medications like penicillamine.

  • Primary Anetoderma: This is marked by the spontaneous eruptions of lesions on the skin without any other symptoms. The cause for primary anetoderma has not yet been determined. The suggested causes include antiphospholipid antibodies, immunological abnormalities and reduced production of elastin. It has also been associated with cataract, bone calcifications, myocardial infarction and blegvad-haxthausen syndrome
  • Secondary Anetoderma: In this case, atrophic lesions are preceded by inflammatory or autoimmune processes. This usually occurs at the site of skin conditions such as chicken pox, syphilis, tumours, acne, infantile haemangioma etc.

Both types of anetoderma can occur simultaneously. The main symptoms of primary and secondary anetoderma are:

Small, round or oval lesions on the upper arms, upper body and thighs. These lesions rarely occur on the neck, face, palms and soles. They may be isolated to grouped together to give a patchy appearance.

1. Atrophic papules

2. Loss of elastic tissue in the skin

3. Fine, diffused wrinkling

Till date, there is no known cure for this disease. If the number of lesions is limited the doctor may look at surgical excision as an option. Different forms of medication have been experimented with, but have not given consistent results. Some of the types of medication prescribed include aspirin, penicillin, vitamin E, niacin, topical epsilon-aminocaproic acid and oral colchicines.

Some cases have also shown improvement on being treated with carbon dioxide fractional lasers and pulsed dye lasers. In cases of secondary anetoderma, successfully identifying and curing the underlying condition can clear up the lesions as well.

Hi, i have depression & anxiety stress, bodyache, laziness and migraine. Please advise me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Sounds to me like you are into an anger related depression (due to the migraines). All the other symptoms go with depression. If you have not been on medication and you want to remain so, you will have to work very hard to recover from this condition. You must first of all seek the help of a counselor, ideally. If that person thinks that you need to meet with a doctor you will need to do so and cooperate right through. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back, if you are not already married. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

I am under weight as per my height. So please suggest me gain weight in short time.
Thank you.
Hi, Include whole grain cereals, legumes and pulses, vegetables, fruits, Whole milk and other dairy products, lean meat, fish, egg. Avoid refined flour, red meat, oily and fat foods, junk food, sugary foods, alcohol, butter, ghee. Stay hydrated all the time. You have to do exercise/ workout in order to get rid of extra calories if any. For your post workout meal include oats with milk, paneer, skin out chicken (stewed preferably), fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna), eggs, sprouts, quinoa as they all are rich in protein. Consider taking olive oil, almonds, dry dates, raisins, green tea as they help you relieve your stress and build up strength and immunity. You can go with any one of the above according to your wish list. Its better a take a pre-workout snack which consists of carbohydrate, it can be a fruit, a breakfast cereal in a limited quantity, milkshake without excess sugar. You can change it accordingly but you have to see that the options are healthy and mind your portions.

What type of food should I get for best body building results. And I want to gain upto 80 kg. With good muscles.
Food items with good source of protein will give you muscle mass. If you are regular in exercise then include good amount of protein with your daily food intake. 'Protein source: Egg, Chicken, Fish, Mutton, Beef, milk, all pulses, legumes and beans' Before one hour of your exercise take food items with good amount of protein and energy (Fruit milk shakes, Mix nuts shake, Home made protein bars etc). Avoid fatty foods before exercise, and start your exercise with one glass of water, in between exercise sips the water and after exercise once your heart rate come to normal take sufficient water. Also after exercise eat protein rich foods. According to your convenience arrange the food intake and exercise and in between food intake don't put more gap, try to keep minimum 2.5 hrs and maximum 3 hrs. Don't stick with particular type of food. Include all different colors of vegetables and fruits, cereals and millets. Arrange your exercise with your trainer, don't concentrate a particular muscle.

Hii. Along with the brisk walking you need to follow a healthy balanced diet. No skipping of meal is allowed. Do not over eat at one time and do not have too much of gap between two meals. Include fiber rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, Multigrain flour, oats, etc. Avoid too much of sugar and fatty foods. Avoid fruit juices, have whole fruit instead. Consult privately for customized diet plans. All the best.

Hello Lybrate user, I would suggest you to follow a diet rich in proteins, eating proteins in every meal will help you boost metabolism as well as help you in weight loss. Along with this you also need to incorporate foods rich in fiber as this also helps you cut fat from the body and help you in weight reduction as well as improves digestion. Basically you need to cut down on calories from simple carbohydrate foods and consume calories from complex carbohydrate foods, proteins and fiber. Drink lots of water throughout the day helps in improving the metabolism and also cuts fat from the body ultimately leading to weight loss. Good luck!
