Loss of interest, decreased concentration and attention, feeling low and disturbed sleep or appetite are some of the signs of depression. Consult a psychiatrist who will assess you in detail. If you are feeling suicidal or hopeless, seek professional help immediately. Try some relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation and deep breathing. Indulge in hobbies. Spend time with people close to you.

Hello lybrate-user, 1.It can be due to excessive stress, anxiety, depression 2.It can be due to disturbance in sleep 3.It can be due to side effects of medicines 4.Excessive alcohol consumption also leads to such type of condition. 5.Inadequate diet such as deficiency of vitamin B12 in the body can cause such type of symptoms. For this look out for the cause and eliminate that, along with this you can start Homeopathic medicines which help you to recover fast there are no side effects of these medicines and they are safe and natural medicines.

Hi lybrate-user! This is an habit that you get adapted to because of thinking or getting involved in some thought or due to boredom or because you have to prepare something for example like exam or studies. You can definitely overcome this by keeping yourself occupied with some or the other task. If you are a college student you can definitely need diversion from this habit by wriring notes, changing position, color marking, walking and studting and taking breaks all these will help you overcome from this problem. Take care. Be relaxed.

Dear , I can understand what you must be going through. Relationship difficulties induce a lot of stress. In case, you have been diagnosed with depression, discontinuing the anti-depressant is not a good idea as you are also having suicidal thoughts. In fact, at this stage increase in dose of medication can be considered. In addition, you can opt for cognitive behavior therapy. This ill help you in coping up with the stress and help you come out of depression. You can consult your psychiatrist regarding the same. You can also consider online session with one of the psychiatrists. Start exercising daily. Start talking to someone close daily in order to ventilate your feelings. Start writing a diary daily. I do hope that you are able to get over this phase soon. Best wishes.

Hello doctor, I have ocd, but now I want baby so I stop using the ocd medicines before 1 month so please tell me, in one month this medicine can totally remove from my body? And it not harm my future baby? And tell me how I am conceive fast?

MBBS, MD (AIIMS, Gold Medalist), Diploma in CBT (Glasgow)
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Hi, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. The medicines that you have mentioned will likely be out of the body in the said time period of one month. So, if you plan for a baby now, there will be no effect on the baby. However, since you have stopped abruptly, I suggest that you meet your psychiatrist regularly to keep a watch on the condition. Re-emergence of OCD during pregnancy can have a lot of impact in many direct and indirect ways. DO not worry but take these precautionary measures. Take care!

Dear lybrate-user, You may be evolving into a borderline personality disorder. Depression, cutting wrist, feeling alone, sharing with a boy etc may be due to your personality weakness. Still you have not fixed your personality at 16 years of age. You can develop a better personality if you take treatment like Cognitive Behaviour therapy or DBT. Please consult a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist who is trained in these therapies for help.

hi, excess of everything is bad. A little stress motivates us but excess of stress takes a toll on your physical as well as mental health. Just try to relax. Tell yourself that The world is not going to stop if you slow down and give some personal quality time to yourself. If you can't relax by yourself then you may either meet a counselor in person or may take a session from me over telephonic counselling.

You love your mother because she gave birth to you and you know her from birth. Also she is your well wisher. But your wife looks at her like another human being and both of them have negativity because they both are possessive about you and want to control you. Your wife will behave based on how your mother deals with her when you are not there. This is an age old women psychology. Keep them apart. Do not try to unite them. Tell them to sort out differences but you do not take sides nor try to interfere. You will be bashed up. Women Psychology. Relax.

Alcohol Problem - How to Identify If Someone Close to You Is Suffering?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry

Alcohol Problem - How to Identify If Someone Close to You Is Suffering?

Do you worry about your friend or relative’s drinking habits? You are not alone. There are people who struggle for years with the same question - How can I tell if the person I love is an alcoholic or not?
Well, the good news is that you don’t need to be a medical professional to figure out the right answer to this vital question. Read on to find simple ways to know whether your loved one suffers from alcohol addiction.

First up is a short quiz about drinking habits, developed by Dr. John Ewing to identify alcohol addiction. Treat this as a pointer and take your loved one to an expert, if it points towards alcohol addiction. You can ask these questions directly to your loved one, or you can answer these questions on their behalf.

According to the developers, one "yes" to the four quiz questions signals a problem, and more than one “yes” means that it's time for you or your loved one to get professional help.

  1. Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
  2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
  3. Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
  4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?”

There are many signs of a serious drinking problem. These include certain behaviours such as:

  1. Drinking just for getting drunk
  2. Drinking alone
  3. Keeping alcohol consumption a secret
  4. Drinking to escape problems
  5. Hiding alcohol bottles
  6. Experiencing withdrawal symptoms like getting irritated or experiencing nervousness, nausea, getting shakes, breaking out into a cold sweat, and getting hallucinations when unable to source alcohol
  7. Having problems at work, school, or home, as a result of alcohol consumption
  8. Losing interest in activities you or your friend used to enjoy
  9. Having blackouts due to heavy drinking
  10. Anger and extreme irritation

Other extreme behaviors to watch out for are:

  1. Being able to drink an awful lot of alcohol
  2. Trouble stopping once your loved one starts drinking
  3. A powerful urge to drink

There is another scientific way to determine, if your loved one is an alcoholic. In the US, medical professionals commonly use a criteria, listed in the fourth edition of the ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders’. According to it, the signs and symptoms of alcoholism are clearly laid down and it states that alcohol dependent people:

  1. Will drink more to get their desired effect from alcohol
  2. Experience withdrawal symptoms when the effect of alcohol wears off
  3. Drink larger amounts of alcohol over a longer period of time
  4. Will be unable to consistently control their drinking
  5. Will leave important work for drinking
  6. Will spend a lot of time during the day getting alcohol, drinking it, and recovering from hangovers.
  7. Continue to use alcohol, despite knowing that their chronic physical or psychological problem is caused due to alcohol.
  8. To be declared alcohol-dependent, your loved one must experience at least three of these criteria during a year.

However, there is still no one definite test to diagnose alcohol-use disorders. Therefore, professionals diagnose them by making use of the patient’s comprehensive medical, family, and mental-health information.

Dear, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration. Take care.
