Smoking - Why Is It Harmful for Your Health?

Smoking has several bad effects on your body, and it can invite many diseases be it related to the heart, lungs, brain or respiratory system. Millions of people everywhere in this world die from problems triggered by smoking. Cigarette smoking is one of the most harmful threats to your body; there is no way you can expect to remain safe while being an addict. It is not easy to give up smoking in a day. You might require some other sort of oral stimulation in the process of quitting.

There are many toxic compounds in a cigarette which further damage your cells. Tobacco is carcinogenic and hence cigarette smoking can result in several types of cancer. Tobacco smoke mainly consists of:

  1. Nicotine: This is an extremely addictive substance. As smokers are hooked to the nicotine, they find it very hard to quit. This acts really fast on their lungs, and reaches to the brain within 15 seconds after you inhale.
  2. Carbon monoxide: It is a dangerous gas without any taste or smell. You body absorbs it immediately as it is very hard to discriminate between oxygen and carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide decreases heart rate and muscle functions thus pushing you towards slow death.
  3. Tar: It is a poisonous chemical which causes cancer. Whilst smoking, 70% tar remains in your lungs. It is basically a sticky brown material.

Smoking is one of the most important reasons behind preventable deaths. The diseases that can be caused by smoking are:

  1. Brain: stroke is one most threatening diseases that can be caused by smoking. Smoking increases your chances of suffering from a stroke. Smoking increases brain aneurysm, which develops the chances of stroke. It can rupture the blood vessels in your brain and it can lead to brain death too.
  2. Heart: when you smoke the smoke enters the blood vessels of your body and it damages the blood circulation system. It can give you several heart diseases like - stroke, heart attack, coronary heart problem and peripheral heart problem.
  3. Lungs: your lungs get the worst effects of smoking. Asthma, cough, wheezing and cold are just the tip of the iceberg. Your lungs directly absorb the nicotine and tar. Other diseases like pneumonia, lung cancer and emphysema can also occur.
  4. Mouth and throat: smoking causes very common oral problems like bad breath and stained teeth. It can also cause gum cancer and throat cancer. 93% of throat, head and neck cancers occur due to smoking.
  5. Infertility and reproduction: smoking destroys blood vessels, which supply blood to the penis causing male impotence. It destroys sperm count in men and egg count in women. It can also cause cervical cancer. Apart from this smoking also causes premature birth, stillbirth and illness.

Hello lybrate-user. U dint gain your weight instantly so have patience & workout, follow a good regimen to loose your excess weight. I suggest you opt for Yoga bcoz that's the best way to loose your weight as well as b healthy too/ join for Dance classes / Brisk walk. Choose based on your interest. Intake of carbohydrate, fat and sugar should be less. Besides protein, intake of fibre should be high. Consume more of salads, green leafy veggies, pulses, low-carbohydrate fruits.

Hello do not do any yoga step directly. Yoga should be done step by step as mentioned in yoga therapies & YOGA LITERATURES. Yoga can not be done seeing tv. First do & emphasize on anulom vilom then kumbhaka & after good practice of all these things you can go for kapalbhati. YOGA IS A SCIENCE & having its OWN RULES, SO YOGA SHOULD NOT BE FOLLOWED SEEING ONLY TV, GOOD YOGA TEACHER CAN HELP & GUIDE YOU PROPERLY.

If I take in morning tea and skimmed milk 2mango in mid morning green tea in lunch I take one roti 3cup moong dal rice 1cup than in snack time I take tea n skimmed milk than one mango and than in dinner I take moong sprout with mango. I do workout at home power yoga, yoga ,30 day challenge, power yoga hiit etc every month I change workout it OK I can loose weight.

Avoid having mangoes. If you wish, you can have 1 mango in a day. Switch to fruits like Apple, Pear, Blueberry, Avocado, Apricot. Instead of regular ones, go for light veggies. Have rice without starch. Besides yoga, try aerobics for fast weight loss.

This is an approach which can disbalance your system. Stomach works 24/7. It is better to eat less frequently than overeat in Eating Window. Better to create balanced approach than such radical approaches, these only work in short term.

Hello, I am 22 years old. I do exercise daily. I go to gym and running every alternate day. I take ashwagandha and gokshura tablets for muscle strength. I also take multivitamin and fish oil supplements after lunch. So doctor is it good to take these many supplements at this age and if not then which supplements can I continue and which ones do I discard. thank you.

Hi, food is the best medicine. Why take supplements when you can eat a well balanced meal? Your 22. You'll be fine without supplements. Try staying away from processed foods- the pizzas, burgers, sodas, energy drinks, canned foods, processed meats- to name a few.

Take high fiber low fat diet. Drink lot of water everyday. Take small and frequent meals at regular intervals of 2-3 hrs. Ask me privately for detailed diet plan.

Hi lybrate-user! Each and every individual should drink minimum of 2 liyerd of water daily. One can even drink more than 2 liters also or as much as they can because water is good and removes toxins from blood, helps blood flow, helps in constipation and helps from dehydration caused during exercise like gym due to sweating or in hot climate. Hi, my age is 62 years old. I had been diagnosed with type II diabetes and the medicines I have been taking are as follows:- Metformin 1000 mg 1xod Metformin 500 mg 1xhs glimepiride 2 mg 1xbd clopid 75 mg 1xod atorvastatin 20 mg 1xhs The above medicines have been taken regularly for past three months. Now I have taken the blood test two days ago. The result is as follows:- FBS 149 PPBS 235 HbA1c 6.0 Serum urea 24 mg/dl serum creatinine 0.89 serum Uric acid 5.3 Liver Function Test Total Bilirubin 0.78 SGOT 50 SGPT 58 LIPID Profile Total cholesterol 135 Triglycerides 121 HDL 46 LDL 65 I request a diagnosis of my status of health. I go for swimming once in a while and find no problem in swimming for about 700 metres in about one hour (that is 14 lengths in a lap of 50 metres each) I am muscular and have a athletic body and have no other symptoms. I love drinking alcohol and have about three pegs of 60 ml each every night most days. Should I stop drinking. I can muster enough will if the kind doctor says so. Thanking you in anticipation.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for your query. I have gone through all the details given including lab values. All the values seem to be well within normal limits, except SGOT & SGPT. Both are slightly high, signifying some affection of liver functions. It points to one thing clearly that is to reduce alcohol intake. It should be preferably one or two days in a week plus much lesser in quantity. Thanks.
