For a fully functional and productive life, a person requires a healthy body and a healthy mind. Mental health issues could range from depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, dementia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, autism and other causes. Hence, it is important that a person pays attention to these mental health disorders to avoid further problems in their lives, as well as the lives of the people around them.

Here are a few reasons as to why a person should not avoid or ignore their mental health problems:

  1. Better Physical Health: There is a solid association between the brain and the body. In case you are in physical pain, your work and family life might be influenced or you will be unable to do the activities you might like. This can prompt anxiety, nervousness and depression. People with physical health issues are three times more prone to look for mental health care than those without physical conditions as physical health problems can prompt mental distress and mental health issues can impair your physical health.
  2. Enhanced Productivity and Financial Stability: Stressful situations may trigger reactions that can make a person unproductive and lead to financial problems as well. Some people end up abandoning their homes, going bankrupt or homeless after trying to manage some sort of mental illness.
  3. Less Strain on the Family: Mental sickness or disorders influence families as well. The children of individuals with mental health issues are at more serious danger for misuse, disregard and an extensive variety of emotional and behavioral issues. Sleep problem is usually due to so many worries and unsolved problems related to family and employment and sometimes due to changes in chemicals in the brain. This problem needs counselling and behaviours therapy and sometimes short course of medication for 3-4 months and everything will be normal. Also meditation and exercise will help you a lot.

Depression is a serious yet common mental health problem that can affect all age groups ranging from young children to the elderly. It is found to be more common among women when compared to men. It can take a toll over one’s peace of mind, physical health, interpersonal relationships as well as job performance (or academic performance). What is deceiving is, the person can also be functioning well, in which case, it can go unnoticed, leading to grave consequences. The good news is that depression is treatable and individuals are able to function much better with treatment. Affected individuals feel sad most of the time. He/she loses the ability to enjoy/be happy. 

As a result of this, the daily activities that he/she participates in do not seem to appeal to him/her anymore. This is especially true in the case of socialising. The affected person will just seem to drop out of social circles. This can be said to be ironic because it is times like these when the individual with depression is in need of friends the most! 

The individual seems to have an overriding belief that the status quo will not be altered by anything and he or she will be stuck in a rut in perpetuity. In other words, depressed people experience a perennial feeling of helplessness. Negative thoughts can also drive one to commit suicide. 

A lot of people who have depression tend to experience a loss of energy. As a matter of fact, this is quite the case with men who enter a phase of depression, as the symptoms which are displayed by them can contrast sharply to those displayed by women. One of the reasons for men tending to report a higher chance of this than women is the fact that they are less likely to express feelings of self loathing. Rather, they usually talk about sleep problems and a loss of interest in things that once they might have found to be interesting or even captivating. They also gradually get quite irritable.

When it comes to women, guilt is quite likely to be felt. They may also sleep a lot longer than what is considered to be normal. Eating habits are a better indication of the presence or absence of depression than most people would realise. Overeating is one of the prime signs, especially in the case of women who are depressed. This leads to them putting on weight, as the rise in the intake of food is compounded by a drop in the amount of healthy physical activity. On the other hand, many may also experience loss of appetite, which over a period of time can even lead to weight loss. Some women who are depressed also complain of aches and pains in the body.

A few individuals who are depressed also complain of weird experiences, like being able to hear voices calling out to them, abusing them in dirty language, asking them to hurt themselves (hallucinations). Some may be found to be extremely suspicious about people around them. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

I want to stop smoking habit I smoke 3-4 cigarettes a day. I tried nicotex chewing gum but, it doesn't helped me more. I think my sexual life is hampering because of it. And, i also drink 60 to 80 ml alcohol a day. Please suggest me. How can I stop smoking and improve my sexual life? And is there any effect of drinking also.

Dear lybrate-user, Congratulations for deciding to quit smoking and alcohol. Nicotex is only a replacement for withdrawal symptoms of cigarettes, like headache, irritability, memory lapses, less concentration, increased appetite, etc. If you don't have any withdrawal symptoms, there is no need to use nicotex. Please continue to motivate yourself on giving up smoking at least for 12 -24 weeks. Then the craving will reduce. Even now, you can observe the craving going away like a passing cloud. Wait for it without smoking. Both alcohol and nicotine affect sex life. It is better to stop both and start enjoying sex life. There can be other causes for sexual dysfunction. You can consult a psychiatrist or sexologist for diagnosis and treatment. All the best.

If he has an explanation for his behaviour, then it will be okay if the reasons are appropriate. So, ideally, you should ask him why he does that. It could also be that he has not told his family about you and it may be because he is afraid or is not sure. But there is no point of you living in doubt and allowing this impasse. Talk to him and get out the truth soon. Your anger is okay unless you lose control over it.

Hie lybrate-user. First of all you need to love yourself, know your worth and know that no one deserves your tears. Having a break up is a part of life and getting depressed about it is, you're wasting your time for something that's not gonna make you happy, that's not gonna lead you anywhere. Ask yourself, will getting depressed or sad, help you any how? Crying over the loss won't recover it. So why not try to do something that'll make you happy. Try do something productive. Keep your mind engaged. Go out, have fun. Keep yourself busy. Love yourself. This world is so big and there are so many people out there. Try to be weird for a while. Do silly things. Go for adventures. Take life day by day. What happened is gone, you can't change it, nothingas gonna change it, so waste your time thinking about it. I know it's not easy but you can try at least. You've got this one life, it's your choice, how you wanna live it. And there's always, always a way and always something to be grateful about. If you're feeling depressed, it can be helpful to try some coping strategies. Reach out and stay connected: Talk to people who make you feel safe and make just dont talk to them on phone or dont just chat with them, meet them face to face and talk. Spend time with them. Find ways to support others: Its nice to receive support, but research shows you get an even bigger mood boost from providing support yourself. Do things that make you feel good: In order to overcome depression, you have to do things that relax and energize you. Exercise: Wake up early and exercise, because exercise is not only good for your body but also for your mind. During depression, even getting out of bed seems difficult, but exercise is a powerful depression fighter. Research shows that regular exercise can be as effective as medication for relieving depression symptoms. It also helps prevent relapse once you re well. Sleep well: During depression its common either to sleep too much or having problem of insomnia. Aim for eight hours of sleep. Eat healthy food: Try to stay away from junk food and eat healthy items. Dont Skip a meal! Try to minimize your intake of sugar and refined carbohydrate. Boost your B vitamins. Deficiencies in B vitamins such as folic acid and B-12 can trigger depression. To get more, take a B-complex vitamin supplement or eat more citrus fruit, leafy greens, beans, chicken, and eggs. Get a daily dose of sunlight: Sunlight can help boost serotonin levels and improve your mood. Whenever possible, get outside during daylight hours and expose yourself to the sun. Aim for at least 15 minutes of sunlight a day. Remove sunglasses (but never stare directly at the sun) and use sunscreen as needed. Keep yourself occupied: Being busy is a way to prevent negative thoughts from going around your head repeatedly. For depressed persons, the first step is often the hardest, so making yourself do things can be a huge difference in your day and getting you started. If nothing of the above mentioned things help, please consult a therapist or psychiatrist. It ll take time, but you will get out of depression. Be strong, because things will get better. It may be stormy now, but it never rains forever

Repetitive tasks, intrusive and repetitive thoughts, checking, counting, disproportionate excess need for order and cleanliness, as well as anxiety when not able to do the same are signs of obsessive compulsive disorder. Hie lybrate-user I have always wondered about this question: What is it that makes me happy? Is it good times spent with friends? Is it performance at work? Is it self awareness? What is it? I created a simple mind map, and started splitting a few things randomly, then I structured them a little, and created a framework. Here is how things happen: You always have a rough belief system in your mind. Your beliefs can be weak, or strong. Sometimes very strong. You might believe in yourself, or in things told by others, or you might believe in someone else. Same way, you can have acquired skills, and you can split your skills as ~ what you can do, vs what you are expected to do. I am only giving you a framework. You can always choose to write down whatever you like on a paper just like this. The framework is, that everything in our lives can be split into three ways: What you think, believe, have, can get, etc. What others think, believe, have, can get about you or themselves. What the reality is or where it can go in time if efforts are put towards improvements. Also note, that everything affects everything else. For example, the more skills you have, the stronger your beliefs in something can be. The stronger your beliefs are, the more others might believe in you. The more others believe in you, the more they can help you out. The more they help you, the better your results can look and so on. Each and everything that affects one another can take a positive or a negative trend over time. When we put efforts onto something, you get some results. Again, everything is affected: [Beliefs, attitudes, results, skills, results…] everything! Here is what happiness is: Happiness is simply an inverse of a summation of all the deltas you can put together. Lets think about it with a few examples (they are made up, but I have felt and experienced them): When I did something great, I wasnt expecting a prize, but my boss gave me one: I got happy! When I did something great, but no one thanked me. I felt tiredness and depression. When I believed in something that was true, but others didnt it made me anxious. Then I put more efforts to show others what I believed in and why. They saw a clearer picture and got convinced - I got happy. When my boss asked me to do a task, and I could not do it the way he expected - he got angry, and I got depressed. When my boss asked me to train someone. I trained them exceeding expectations - they got happy, my boss got happy, so I got happy! This extends to personal life, not just professional life: I made a sandwich for my friend. He was not even expecting one. He got happy, so I got happy. My friend invited me to his party, but I got late. He got anxious, so I got anxious. I wasnt anticipating my friends to visit, but they visited me during vacations - they got happy, I got happy. Put well defined efforts that reduce some delta somewhere: Usually the efforts would have to change something. The change could very well be within you. In fact, if you think deeply, the change is within you. It is in your thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, actions. Examples: Increase your skills so that you can achieve what you believe in and what others believe in. Put efforts towards extending gestures that others expect out of you. Make them feel good. Make them believe in you. Make a reality check constantly to figure out where you stand vs where others think you stand. Learn how to convince others so that they believe in you. Learn to lead others to a common cause. Help others reduce their deltas. They are happier - you are happier. Hope the best from others, but dont make expectations. Give your best to others, and constantly try to exceed expectations. When you repeat such experiences too many times, you might know what you have to never be anxious, never stressed out, and always be happy Stay blessed and stay inspired!

Sir, I am suffering with OCD mental decease. Then my doctor advised me to take prodep 20 mg capsule with Risperidone tablets. While I was using these, I feel my norse growing bigger and bigger. Is this is a side effect of these medicine?

My cousin gets fits and seizers like epilepsy. Consulted neurologist and she suggested MRI. MRI report says Diffuse cerebellar Atrophy. What does it mean? please let me know. Is this serious disease and curable? Will ayurvedic treatment be better? Is this Mri finding due to epilepsy or epilepsy due to this mri finding? Thank you. Her age is 23.

Hi Mr. lybrate-user, it seems like your cousin has a genetic disease, but I can not be sure unless, he is examined, right now I suggest ,go to the neurologist who is treating him. Ayurvedic treatment is not my field, but there is no evidence that it helps in your cousin's illness.

Untreated and chronic stress can bring about serious health conditions including tension, sleeping disorder, muscle pain, hypertension and a weak immune system. Stress can fuel other diseases and disorders, for example, heart diseases, depression and obesity most of the times. By discovering positive, healthy and solid ways to oversee stress as it happens, a significant number of these negative wellbeing outcomes can be decreased. Here are five effective ways to manage stress:

lybrate-user breakup is a psychologically hard time for any body so I would suggest you to few tips which helps you in overcoming from your problem. 1- Accept what ever happened with you. 2- Try to develop some social support to system like contact your old friends, increase your sodial media presence, take interest in selfie and post it or try to communicate your problem with your parents if it's last long. 3 - Don't change your routine Life and try to manage time as you are managing previously. 4 - Increase your physical exercise or you may join gym too. 5- Try to write whatever happens with you and accept its as a experience in your life. This is all from my side and after all these if you still feel Stress than must consult any good psychologist and take individual Counseling atleast 3 months.

I hope you are combining medication with some counseling. This is extremely important and you will experience additional benefits and will learn some coping skills and techniques which will carry you in good stead. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.
