Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. TSH 8.9 mU/L is high. This can lead to increase in weight plus there may be other symptoms of hypothyroidism. Usually for most patients the advise is to maintain TSH < 3mU/L to remain free from any symptoms of hypothyroidism. But if there are heart related issues slightly higher level of TSH is good enough. Because of reduction of dosage of thyroxine from 150 to 125 mcg, TSH has gone up. My suggestion is increase the dose to 137.5 mcg per day and then check TSH after 6 to 8 weeks. Thanks.

Don't Drink Sugar Calories

MBBS, FIAGES-MInimal Access Surgery

Don't Drink Sugar Calories

Sugary drinks are the most fattening things you can put into your body.

  • This is because liquid sugar calories don't get registered by the brain in the same way as calories from solid foods.
  • For this reason, when you drink soda, you end up eating more total calories.
  • Sugary drinks are strongly associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and all sorts of health problems.
  • Keep in mind that fruit juices are almost as bad as soda in this regard. They contain just as much sugar, and the small amounts of antioxidants do NOT negate the harmful effects of the sugar.

How to avoid daytime sleepiness A lot of people, irrespective of whether they go out to work, to college or stay at home, feel sleepy during the day. Some out of fatigue, some because of having a heavy lunch and some others because they do not get a good night? S sleep. Whatever be the reason, a few exercises and some discipline can help you get rid of such sleep cravings. Few ways to avoid daytime sleepiness are: 1. At least 30 minutes of workout is important for every individual. Go for walks, go to the gym, take up yoga or aerobics - regardless of the kind of exercise you are doing. When the body gets exercise, so does the brain and you are refreshed to take on the rest of the day. 3. Go to bed gadget free: Keep your books, mobile, tab, laptop and TV remote away from the bed. Hello, Thanks for the query. Long standing diabetes whether very well controlled all throughout or not is likely to affect sexual function. This happens due to smaller blood vessels being damaged (supplying penile muscle). So it is better to consult a sexologist and follow his advise. Sometime drugs like PDE-V Inhibitors do help, to be taken just before the sexual act (about 1 hour earlier). Thanks.

Management Of Diabetes Via Ayurvedic Remedies!

Management Of Diabetes Via Ayurvedic Remedies!

Are you suffering from diabetes? If yes, then it’s time for you to be extra careful about your health. Diabetes may cause several other diseases as well. You must check your lifestyle and take efforts to get rid of diabetes as soon as possible. If you have diabetes, then youu are at risk of developing nerve damages (neuropathy), vascular injuries and other heart diseases, regardless of your age, sex or other external or internal factors. Diabetes patients must strive to maintain fasting blood glucose levels less than 110 mg/dL and hemoglobin HbA1C level less than 7%. Also, diabetes patients should keep a check on blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Here’s how diabetes can affect your overall health:
There is a correlation between blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes. Researchers have found that high bad cholesterol levels act as hindrance to insulin regulation. People with diabetes are more likely to develop heart-related diseases. About 60% diabetes patients die due to heart attacks. Diabetes is responsible for hardening of arteries or atherosclerosis. This situation is dangerous and can cause heart attacks, strokes or other chronic diseases.

Diabetes leads to impaired nerve function. This is called neuropathy. This condition is of two types: Peripheral (affects toes, feet, legs, hand, and arms) and Autonomic (affects digestion, bowel, bladder, heart and sexual activity). Symptoms of neuropathy include tingling, weakness, burning sensation, numbness in the limbs, digestive disorders, infection of the bladder and erectile dysfunction.

Diabetes is responsible for causing damage to the kidneys as well. This is called nephropathy. In this condition, the filters in the kidney or glomeruli get damaged. As a result, there is a leakage of protein in the urine. Consequently, kidneys get damaged. Urine showing small amounts of protein is an indication of kidney damage. About 20-40% patients suffering from diabetes die due to renal failure. The symptoms of renal disorder due to diabetes include itching, fatigue, urine with protein, swelling of feet and ankles and pale skin colour.

Diabetes causes non-injury amputations as it affects the nerve in the limbs, especially foot. Usually, minor infections in the foot may lead to ulcers and later require amputation. In rare cases, charcot joint or charcot foot may also occur. This is called neuropathic arthropathy. The symptoms include swelling and reddening of the foot. The bones of the affected foot have a tendency to develop cracks, deforming the entire region. Diabetes leads to blindness in adults. The eye disorder caused due to diabetes is called retinopathy. Patients with diabetes develop cataract easily. The capillaries and blood vessels in the retina get damaged or obstructed, resulting in damage to the entire retina.

Ayurveda is a system of medicine that takes a holistic approach to treat various diseases. It is believed in Ayurveda that when a disease occurs in your body then it means that the mind, body and soul is unbalanced.

It is believed that everyone is made up of five elements that is  earth, air, water, ether and fire. If all of these elements in the body are well balanced, then the body tends to function in a healthy manner. An illness is a sign that one or multiple elements in the body are not balanced. A practitioner carries out a diagnosis of your diet, lifestyle, seeks to find out the cause of the imbalance and provides treatment accordingly.

Ayurvedic remedies for diabetes:

  1. Plan your diet as it is one of the most important thing in order to manage your diabetes. One must take balanced diet. But avoid foods increasing the Kapha Dosha. These include sugar, fats, potatoes, rice. You must avoid alcohol
  2. Take the help of physical exercises or yoga to stay fit.
  3. Check your weight.
  4. Don’t sleep during daytime.

Here is a list of useful herbs for diabetes management–

  1. Jambhul (Eugenia jambolana) powder from jamun core.
  2. Gurmar(gymnema sylvestre)
  3. Bitter Gourd/bitter melon (Momordica charantia)
  4. Bel (Aegle marmelos).
  5. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum)
  6. Turmeric
  7. Neem
  8. Triphala
  9. Shilajit

Apart from these basic natural foods, you must contact an Ayuvedic practitioner, who will help you not just in planning your diet, but will suggest certain specific Ayurvedic medicines which will boost you efforts to get rid of diabetes.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Long standing diabetes even when it is fairly well controlled does affect kidney, causing diabetic nephropathy. This happens mainly due affection of filtration membrane in the nephrons. High creatinine, increased urea concentration and swelling of feet and legs plus increased protein excretion in urine are the signs. In such a situation following things are required: strict bloo glucose control (Fasting < 100 mg, PP 160 to 170 mg & HbA1c% <7), protein restriction, well controlled BP are primary requirements. In such a situation dialysis is one very necessary measure. Plus that may have to be continued for quite some time. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. You have to achieve a strict blood glucose control with fasting glucose < 100 mg, PP 1650 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8, then general health will remain in good shape. Thanks.

Taking insulin regularly does not make you dependent on it. It just helps bring sugar under control very fast. And after achievemnt of target Hba1 c level the patient can be shifted to oral medicines. The side effects of insulin therapy is weight gain or injection site lipoatrophy or hypertrophy if taken at the same site everyday.

Can diabetes thyroid bp that I am suffering from be cured to get a normal pregnancy? Will all these affect my pregnancy?

Can diabetes thyroid bp that I am suffering from be cured to get a normal pregnancy? Will all these affect my pregnancy?
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. I have seen the details and understand the concern. If blood glucose is well controlled (between 90 to 120 mg through out the day) preferably with Insulin, TSH <2 mU/L and BP well controlled, then it is possible to get pregnant and have a healthy baby. But throughout the gestational period you have to manage all the three conditions very well. There is no CURE for any one of these. Thanks.

Diabetes - Decoding Most Common Myths & Facts!

Diabetes - Decoding Most Common Myths & Facts!

Diabetes is a chronic lifestyle disease that can affect any person at any age and at some level we all are aware about it. It is also characterized by the body’s inability to create or process insulin. Though it is a very common disease, there are a number of misconceptions and myths about it. Let’s take a closer look at some of these myths.

Myth1: Diabetics cannot eat sugar in any form
Fact: Diabetics do not necessarily have to live on a sugar-free diet. However, the amount of sugar being consumed needs to be highly regulated. Sugar is avoidable when the person’s blood sugar level is high but if the person has low blood sugar, a little sugar can help raise blood sugar to a normal level. A diabetic needs to have a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber, fruits and vegetables and controlled amounts of carbohydrates, fats and sugar.

Myth2: Diabetes only affects obese people
Fact: The risk of diabetes is higher when it comes to overweight and obese people but this disease can affect thin people as well. A person’s family medical history, genetic makeup, age and ethnicity are other factors that could influence the risk of suffering from diabetes. Additionally, people living a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to suffer from diabetes.

Myth3: Diabetics need lots of rest and should not play sports
Fact: A number of well-known sportsmen are diabetic. Hence, there is no truth in the above statement. Regular exercise is a must for diabetics. This improves diabetes management and helps stabilize blood sugar levels. However, if you have been living a sedentary lifestyle, you cannot jump straight into high-intensity exercises. Let your body gradually get fitter and test your blood sugar half an hour before exercising as well as every half hour when exercising. This helps keep a check on your blood sugar levels. If you start feeling weak, take a break and have a light snack.

Myth4: Diabetics have to use insulin injections
Fact: There are two types of diabetes; type1 and type 2. People suffering from type 1 diabetes usually need insulin injections but people suffering from type 2 diabetes can usually manage the disease with medication. Paying attention to your diet, regular exercise and medication can also help reverse type 2 diabetes.

Myth5: Diabetes is communicable
Fact: Diabetes cannot spread from one person to another. Touching a diabetic or sharing food with them will not make another person diabetic as well. Diabetes can only be passed on genetically from parents to a child. Even in this case, the disease itself is not transferable. The child will only have a higher risk of developing diabetes. Thus, it is not necessary for a child born to diabetic parents to suffer from the disease as well.

Ayurvedic Remedies That Help Treat Thyroid Disorder!!

Thyroid has become a common ailment among most women in India nowadays. It is triggered due to the presence of impurities in the blood, which lead to hormonal imbalances and therefore, a number of symptoms, including anorexia, unhealthy weight gain, loss of energy, weakness and fatigue are experienced. But in case of hyperthyroid, you will notice an increased metabolic activity, a rise in pulse rate, loss of weight and palpitation.

Irrespective of whether you are suffering from hyperthyroid or hypothyroid, Ayurvedic treatment has some viable solutions that are aimed at elevating your health condition.

Ayurveda and Thyroid--

Though there is no direct mention of thyroid in the Ayurvedic texts, there are major implications that hint towards a disease like thyroid that is caused due to imbalance of body fluid and its probable treatments. Thyroid imbalance can be controlled by the following treatment regimen that includes:

1. Dietary regulations: As per Charaka, thyroid doesn’t affect those individuals who take milk in adequate quantities. In addition, you must take moong seeds, bengal gram seeds, sugarcane, cucumber, barley and old rice in optimum amounts for prevention of thyroid. In case you are already suffering from thyroid imbalance, then you must also aim at having a considerable amount of milk on a regular basis.

2. Herbs for regulating thyroid: The herb named Purple Mountain Ebony is purposely helpful in the treatment as well as proper functioning of the thyroid gland. In addition to this herb, you must also intake Punarnava, Brahmi, Jatamansi, Gokshura and Shilajita for alleviating your thyroid problems.

3. Home remedies: If there is swelling in any part of the body caused due to thyroid imbalances, then it can be properly treated by applying a fine paste of Jalakumbhi over the affected area. The juice of this paste can be administered in a small quantity of 22 grams in a span of 24 hours. It helps to increase the amount of iodine in the body which helps to fix various problems in the body. If you are experiencing a lack of energy and weakness, you can use coconut oil for boosting the sluggish metabolism of the body.

4. Yoga for treating thyroid: There are various Yogic postures, which are believed to help in the maintenance of the thyroid gland. You can practice sun salutation, fish pose and shoulder stand for alleviating your condition and get rid of all types of health issues caused from thyroid imbalances.

If you wish to get a personalised evaluation of your health condition, then it is imperative to pay a visit to an expert who can recommend proper Ayurvedic treatment methods for you.
