Thank you for the query. I would need to ask you certain questions. Is your cough dry or are your producing sputum? is there any associated fever or throat ache/irritation? are you having a running nose? are you a smoker? if your cough is dry, and you are not having a fever, it may be an allergic cough. In that case simple steam inhalation thrice a day may help. You can go for anti-allergic tablets (like levocetirizine) or cough syrups with anti-allergic components. No need for any antibiotic therapy in this cough. If you are producing sputum or having associated fever, it may be a viral infection. A number of cough syrups with the specific composition are available. Drink plenty of water. Antibiotics are not effective in viral infection. If a cough persists for more than 1 week, some blood tests like total count/differential count, sputum examination and chest x-ray may be needed. If a bacterial infection is detected antibiotic will be needed.
