You need to understand he has this problem in the past and you like him too, and are now unable to make a decision. It is advisable that you need to attend a counsellor for a relationship counselling near to you and develop confidence in your partner and get rid of the doubt. Try on your side.

The Voice of my father is coming very low, he doesn't have cold or cough. He was so speaking fine a few weeks ago. It's just in last one week that his voice was muffled and today it's almost suppressed.

General Physician, Delhi
Laryngitis is the most common cause of hoarseness and voice loss that starts suddenly. Most cases of laryngitis are caused by a viral infection that leads to swelling of the vocal cords. Other includes voice overuse, smoking, infection, GERD etc. Where inflammation of vocal cord occur which leads to difficult vibration of vocal cord leading to loss of voice pitch. The best treatment for this condition is to stay well hydrated and to rest or reduce voice use. Consult a ENT specialist to get evaluated and find out the underlying pathology.

I am 20 weeks pregnant, nowadays due to some family issues I am taking so much stress and I am crying to much. My husband don't understand my feelings. I am in problem. I love him so much. But at this stage when I need him most he is saying that go and live at your home. I can't live without him. Sometimes I overreact on some things. But in a minute or two I apologize but he never forgive me. He stretched every issue so big. From last two days we're not talking to each other. I am dying at every moment. I don't want to harm my baby. Please help me what should I do.

M.Sc - Applied Psychology, Guidance &Counselling, B.A., Psychology, Pharmacy

There are two views causing your problem. One is, of course, generally pregnant women expect more love&affection and personal support from their husband. You are saying that only in recent days you have been experiencing so much stress. It means that you had been living well in recent past. The problem, in my view is, your expectation has become more than ever before, and your husband's offering is normal/usual. This imbalance may cause friction between you. The other view is, during pregnancy there occur a lot of biochemical changes in the body which affect our normal physiological as well as psychological functioning which include mood swings, generalized anxiety about the labor/delivery (fear or over expectation of the outcome). These conditions may cause you behave so or exaggerate your stress levels. I hope, by changing your behavior, i. E. Understanding and reducing your expectations to a level tolerable by your husband, will work well. Above all, the birth of your baby may change the entire situation upside down. Let's hope for the best.

Dear Lybrate User, Just because your GF left you, you do not become worthless. You are valuable. Please understand that there are many other people - like your family and friends who love you. By killing her or by killing yourself you will create more trouble for yourself and for your family and friends. It is very natural that you are feeling very sad and you keep crying. Please understand that crying is part of healing. You have lost one important relationship in your life and it will be painful to face this loss. Allow yourself to cry. Crying will relieve you of your sadness. It appears that something went wrong in your relationship. Try to understand what went wrong and be careful next time. If you are not comfortable, do not accept her proposal to be "just friends" now. If required, please consult a Counsellor. The Counsellor will help you to process your loss and will help you to move on and invest again in life. You are very young. Take charge of your life and take care.

8 Risk Associated With Attachment Disorder!

MBBS, DPM (Psychiatry)

8 Risk Associated With Attachment Disorder!

While most children share a strong bond with their parents, especially the mother, some infants are unable to establish lasting relationships with their parents or caregivers. This is known as attachment disorder. It is a rare yet serious condition as it affects the child’s relationships at a later stage and also triggers delinquent behavior. Children, who have been abandoned, orphaned or are victims of abuse are the most vulnerable to this condition.

What causes attachment disorder?
The exact cause for attachment disorder is not yet understood. However, researchers have put together a number of viable hypotheses for this. One such hypothesis suggests that when needs of a child are ignored or when he begins to feel unwanted, the child begins to expect hostility, negativity and rejection. This is a learnt response and the child begins to feel that his needs are unwanted. With time, these responses make the child untrusting and he withdraws into himself to avoid social contact. This affects the development in the brain and causes attachment problems that affect the child’s personality and future relationships.

Risks associated with it
Some children are at a higher risk of attachment disorder than others. This includes

  1. Children living in orphanages or other such institutes
  2. Children whose caregivers are changed frequently
  3. Children who have had prolonged hospitalization
  4. Neglected children
  5. Children who have suffered from physical, sexual or verbal abuse
  6. Children living in extreme poverty
  7. Children born to parents with mental conditions or anger management problems
  8. Children born to a mother suffering from post partum depression

There are two types of attachment disorders; inhibited and disinhibited.

  1. Inhibited attachment disorder: Children suffering from inhibited attachment disorder are likely to be:
    • Detached
    • Withdrawn
    • Unresponsive to comforting ie. they shun all types of relationships and generally do not get along with their peers or caregivers.
  2. Disinhibited attachment disorder: On the other hand, children suffering from disinhibited attachment are likely to:
    • Seek attention
    • Display inappropriate behavior
    • Frequently break social boundaries
    • Be inappropriately familial and attached to selective figures.

Additionally, children suffering from either type of attachment disorder are manipulative, destructive, moody and lack compassion and remorse.
Effects of attachment disorder
If not managed properly in its early stages, this disorder can continue into adulthood. This leads to:

  1. Relationship problems with peers, friends and family members
  2. Low self esteem
  3. Depression
  4. Anger management
  5. Academic problems
  6. Unemployment
  7. They are also at a high risk for drug abuse and alcohol addiction. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

5 Common Treatments For Mental Health Issues!

As most of the economies over the world become industrialized, the quality of life increases, but with it comes a plethora of mental health problems. Especially in a country like India, the rapid industrialization and the expansion of opportunities has seen a rise in the number of people afflicted by mental health disorders. Some of the common mental health issues and their treatment methods are discussed here-

Common Mental Health Issues

  1. Depression – Depression is a very serious issue that affects a significant part of the population. It is not only a public health concern but also a fast spreading problem in the world. Although depression related to stress is on the rise, it could happen due to chemical imbalances within the brain as well.

  2. Anxiety Disorder – While stress and anxiety tend to be a part of your daily life, over time, it could build up and end up being a disorder. Symptoms of frequent panics or anxiety could build up to become anxiety and panic disorders wherein you would be constantly under stress due to external situations such as social anxiety or have panic disorders.

  3. Schizophrenia – This problem is caused within the brain due to neurochemical issues and causes paranoia, hallucinations, frightfulness and distorted thought patterns. This is a major psychiatric disorder and requires extensive treatment.

  4. Eating Disorders These disorders are marked by problems of eating which in turn affect your health adversely. These disorders are caused by mental issues and are primarily of three types; Binge eating disorder, anorexia (obsession over what one’s eats) and Bulimia (binge eating and then purging to avoid putting on weight).

  5. Bipolar Disorder – A very common mental disorder, this mental problem entails uncontrollable mood swings from happy (at times, euphoric) to sad in a short span of time or alternating phases of feeling ecstatic and often exhibiting reckless behavior to being severely depressed. This is a serious issue and can even result in suicidal tendencies.

  6. Substance Abuse and Addiction Problems – Another effect of stress is the increasing dependence on drugs and alcohol which in turn becomes a pattern and thus may cause problems in your life as you start using these substances to escape reality.

Common Mental Health Treatments-

Many people diagnosed with mental illness achieve strength and recovery through participating in individual or group treatment. There are many different treatment options available. There is no treatment that works for everyone – individuals can choose the treatment, or combination of treatments, that works best. Do consult a doctor before choosing one-

  1. Psychotherapy – The treatment of mental problems provided by a mental health counselor through dedicated sessions over a period of time is one of the most effective ways of countering problems. Psychotherapy explores thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and seeks to improve an individual’s well-being. Psychotherapy paired with medication is the most effective way to promote recovery.

  2. Medication – This is the most common form of therapy that aims to reduce the chemical imbalances within the brain, either through oral pills or through injections.

  3. Support Groups – This is especially good as getting to talk to similar people and sharing experiences with them help in reducing the isolation, thus helping them vent out repressed emotions and connect with like -minded people.

  4. Residential Treatments – Effective in cases of drug or other forms of addiction as well as problems which require conditioning, hospitals and other residential treatment facilities such as a rehab center are used extensively to treat these along with other problems.

  5. Treatment through stimulation of the brain – There are many newer treatments which are proving to be effective by stimulating the neurotransmitters that help correcting imbalances within the brain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychologist and ask a free question.

I am addicted of smoking and drinking. I want to leave it but I can't able. Give some ideas about how to leave smoking and drinking?

Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi. Take homoeopathic medicine which will help you to get rid of your habit of smoking and it’s side-effects. Schwabe's Daphne Indica/ thrice daily for 3 months. After a month, report back to me.' For addiction of drinking: Start with homoeopathic medication by Schwabe - Quercus Robur 1x/ thrice a day daily for 4 weeks. Start taking fresh, nutritive, balanced and healthy food consisting more of seasonal fruits, green vegetables, pulses, legumes, nuts, flaxseeds, 10-12 glasses of water in a day, 6-8 hrs. Of sleep daily and think healthy! Yoga Poses: -Marichyasana: It is performed by sitting in a comfortable position on the floor. Sit cross-legged on the floor and pull your right thigh towards your chest. Twist your body towards the right side. Repeat the twist on the left side. -Suryanamaskar: To begin with, hold your hands folded in front of you (as in the Indian Namaskara pose) and look at the sun. Raise your hands straight upwards in the folded position. Bend down and touch your feet. Stretch one leg outwards and arch your body backwards. Bend forward in the downward dog pose and then rest your entire body on your belly. Next, slowly lift up your torso in the cobra pose. Now, return back to the downward dog pose and all the other poses you have performed before it in the return sequence. Ultimately, you will return to the folded hands pose which you have started with. -Baddha Konasana is performed in a seated posture. Start by sitting with your legs stretched outwards. Now fold one leg and then the next, and place them with the soles of the feet in contact with each other. Remain seated in the position for as long as you can. -Balasana helps in combating alcoholism by strengthening the mind of the alcohol addict. This asana relieves mental stress and fatigue and improves blood circulation to the brain. To perform this asana, kneel down, touch the floor with your forehead and stretch out your hands in the front.

Hi, You can go ahead with marriage its not a problem. Phimosis is a condition that occurs in all ages of men, where the foreskin does not fully retract over the head of the penis. The non retractable state can be considered normal for males up to adolescence. It is possible to acquired phimosis from damage or scarring to the penis, it can show as a white ring around the tip that is hardened non elastic skin. It can also be caused by narrowness. Some men may have trouble during sex and masturbation, even pain. If this happens once, let it heal. If it happens continually you will want to take action. Seeking a doctor is always the best step, but here we go into depth on some home remedies that may work, or get your started. Along with stretching (which I hope you are doing it in right way), Although it’s not necessary, your doctor can prescribe betamethasone cream to help speed up the process. Apply a tiny dab of cream twice a day to the inside of the tight ring, after stretching, and rub it in. This will make your skin produce less collagen, so it is more likely to stay stretched out between sessions. Try not to get much on your glans, but it may be unavoidable. Never use soap on your penis. Wash it using only water. You can gently retract the foreskin when you urinate. Again, over time, this will help to stretch the foreskin. Consult me for query. All the best.

I have quit smoking since October 2015 and it was relapsed couple of days back. I also drinking moderately but daily....
The combination of alcohol and smoking is deadly for your health. I am so glad that you are seeking to get rid of these habits and that will play a major role in your recovery. You must stop them both, abruptly and immediately. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of these habits. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the smoking and drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ‘cross addictions’ i.e. Another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as your primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. I congratulate you on this fabulous decision that will benefit you. You are taking action that will have a major bearing on many lives.

You do not need to forget her. Once you start trying to forget her, you will feel the thoughts about her only increase in frequency and volume that may lead you to many psychological problems. Instead, keep in touch with her as a friend, at the same time, try to focus and spend more time on your studies or career planning. If you are strong enough to balance both, you will be the real life hero. Wish you a successful career life.

Dear lybrate-user, thanks for the question. I went through the question and I do understand your problems. I do not see any nerve problems except that of anxiety disorder. You are having anxiety disorder and quite naturally you are going to face many symptoms as you mentioned here. We need to find the basic cause of your anxiety disorder and treat the cause. Anxiety disorder is usually treated with a combination of psychotherapy, life style change and relaxation therapy. If done correctly, success is for sure. Please consult a psychologist. I hope my answer is satisfatory. I am further available for clarifications. Take care.

Regarding your career: Try to put up your resumes or CV on as many job sites as possible. Most of them are free so it will not cost you anything. It is possible that since you may not have significant experience, you may have to take a simpler job with less pay. However do not despair. Everyone has to start somewhere. The important thing is to start a job somewhere, get experience, then you can upgrade to a better job. At the same time, if possible, do some additional courses that will help to strengthen your resume. Also confide in someone you trust and spend time with family and friends. This will help you reduce your stress. If you feel suicidal consult a psychiatrist immediately. Loss of interest, decreased concentration and attention, feeling low and disturbed sleep or appetite are some of the signs of depression. Consult a psychiatrist who will assess you in detail. If you are feeling suicidal or hopeless, seek professional help immediately. Try some relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation and deep breathing. Indulge in hobbies. Spend time with people close to you.

5 Ways to Manage Stress!

5 Ways to Manage Stress!

Stress is a response to pressure or threat. It makes us feel tense, on edge or nervous. Stress triggers a surge of hormones called adrenaline which temporarily affects the nervous system, causing your heart rate to increase along with your blood pressure and breathing. In today’s world, everyone feels the weight of stress. Whether it is in school, at work or even at home. It is important to not let the stress we feel interfere with our day to day routines. Here is a way to manage your stress when you feel it is getting to be too much:

Have a mindful SNACK:

Stop: Stop whatever you are doing and take a minute or two and reboot. When you feel everything is getting to be too much, stop mid-bite, mid-step or even mid-yell and reboot yourself.

Notice: Notice what is happening within and around us. Notice the things you can see, hear, smell etc and most importantly see if you can notice your thoughts. You do not need to analyse them. Simply become aware of them.

Accept: Whatever you are struggling with or whatever is stressing you, accept and acknowledge it for what it is without any judgment. Accepting that something has gone wrong or is not going your way is essential to fixing the problem.

Curious: Ground yourself with questions about your environment and what you are feeling. Ask yourself questions regarding the same. What am I feeling? What am I thinking? What do I see? What do I hear?  Asking these questions will help you ground yourself and take the necessary steps in solving the issue.

Kindness: Realistically speaking, it is hard to find the silver lining for all problems. Sometimes the problems we are faced with are daunting, unpleasant or boring. Yet, it still needs to be solved. If we approach every person and problem with a positive attitude it will help get things back on track.
