Dear lybrate user. When people ruminate, they over-think or obsess about situations or life events, such as work or relationships. Research has shown that rumination is associated with a variety of negative consequences, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, binge-drinking and binge-eating. I suggest you to force stop rumination. Engage in physical activities, outdoor games, entertainment etc. When in work try to provide some sort of break to yourself every half an hour. Take care.

How can I help the lady who are having the low self confidence and I am always telling him that do not take tension. Help me plzz.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
How can I help the lady who are having the low self confidence and I am always telling him that do not take tension. ...
1. Stay away from negativity and bring on the positivity This is the time to really evaluate your inner circle, including friends and family. This is a tough one, but it's time to seriously consider getting away from those individuals who put you down and shred your confidence. Even a temporary break from Debbie Downer can make a huge difference and help you make strides toward more self-confidence. Be positive, even if you're not feeling it quite yet. Put some positive enthusiasm into your interactions with others and hit the ground running, excited to begin your next project. Stop focusing on the problems in your life and instead begin to focus on solutions and making positive changes. 2. Change your body language and image This is where posture, smiling, eye contact, and speech slowly come into play. Just the simple act of pulling your shoulders back gives others the impression that you are a confident person. Smiling will not only make you feel better, but will make others feel more comfortable around you. Imagine a person with good posture and a smile and you'll be envisioning someone who is self-confident. Look at the person you are speaking to, not at your shoes--keeping eye contact shows confidence. Last, speak slowly. Research has proved that those who take the time to speak slowly and clearly feel more self-confidence and appear more self-confident to others. The added bonus is they will actually be able to understand what you are saying. Go the extra mile and style your hair, give yourself a clean shave, and dress nicely. Not only will this make you feel better about yourself, but others are more likely to perceive you as successful and self-confident as well. A great tip: When you purchase a new outfit, practice wearing it at home first to get past any wardrobe malfunctions before heading out. 3. Don't accept failure and get rid of the negative voices in your head Never give up. Never accept failure. There is a solution to everything, so why would you want to throw in the towel? Make this your new mantra. Succeeding through great adversity is a huge confidence booster.

Chest pain can be a symptom of anxiety itself. You need to tell your age and other risk of heart disease like diabetes, high blood pressure etc. If you are above 40 years age then you should get a ECG done to rule out angina I.e. Heart disease.

I am being afraid of my age. I am 19 but some questions always annoying me like. I always thought about my future. ac...
I am not sure I understand you well but let me see how I can help you. I am glad you have fond memories of your childhood which is a rare phenomenon. However yo have to grow up and away from those times and live in your present. It may also be that you are not interested in your studies because it may not be suitable to your aptitude. Please meet with a career guidance counselor and do some tests that will also determine what your natural skills are and then choose an appropriate career and course. In terms of concentration here are a few guidelines: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive or coconut oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that you and the family go for counseling too. You need to talk to a counselor about these annoying questions and clear your mind up. You may otherwise lose all interest in studies and life pretty soon.

My father isn't stop drinking, but his health is too bad and he is not listening to our words. Doctors telling there is no cure for his problem. What should I do now?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
It sounds like he is an advanced stage of alcoholism and needs admission to a rehabilitation center to ideally help him deal with this problem. There are no guarantees about stopping one?s addiction. But that does not mean we should not keep at it, over and over again until we succeed. Now it is difficult to give up all by himself because he has become addicted to alcohol and there is so much to do. Under such circumstances it is best that you admit him into a de-addiction center and let him stay there for at least 6 months and after that he can attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving and to act as an antabuse i.e. he will have a serious reaction, if he consumes even a small quantity of alcohol or alcohol based substances. It has to be carefully monitored to see that he not only consumes the medication but is also avoiding alcohol. Ultimately, it is his will power and the support that he receives from the medical fraternity and his close and dear ones. He must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course take a look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ?cross addictions? i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide him on several measures and precautions he will need to take to stay with his resolve. Even after the rehabilitation he must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. The family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. He cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to his drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. The children will also have to attend meetings to work out their issues because of the father?s habit. In fact, they are all suffering from the Adult Children Of Alcoholics Syndrome (ACOAs), which in effect means that they are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or can have cross addiction problems, and that they will have similar traits of the abusing alcoholic but in a milder form. There are special support groups for them all over the world. Should they touch or indulge in alcohol or any addictive substances or behaviors, they could also become full-fledged addicts themselves. Make a serious plan with whoever else?s support he can get and act on it fast. If he is not cooperative, there are some centers that will come and pick him up, after he is completely drunk, and admit him by force. This will however, require the wife and family?s consent.

Hi ive been diagnosed with major anxiety/depressive disorder like 1.5 years back. Ive had my share of panic attacks and phases of depression. One of the physicians I showed to had ordered tests for vitamin b12 deficiency and vitamin d and they were significantly low. 150pg/ml for b12 and 20 for Vit. D after taking shots for both was fine for a long time taking paxidep25 mg daily. I made a mistake and stopped and ive had on and off phases of anxiety and restlessness. Recently mya condition deteriorated again, im feeling restless and heaviness in my legs and light headedness. I checked b12 and D again and it seems theyve dropped to 250pg/ml and 20 for vit. D again. But my psychiatrist and the general physician I contacted both say it has nothing to do with anxiety. Is this true? Or can low b12 levels make me anxious and restless.

Dear user. Low b12 level cannot contribute to anxiety. Usually the symptoms are: Weakness, tiredness, or lightheadedness. Heart palpitations and shortness of breath. Pale skin. A smooth tongue. Constipation, diarrhea, a loss of appetite, or gas. Nerve problems like numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and problems walking. Vision loss. Work with your doctor for cure. Take care.

Hi, dizziness could be caused due to spondylosis, anaemia, dehydration, high or low blood pressure, or low sugar levels in blood. In your case, I assume you have ruled out bp, diabetes, and anaemia. Drink plentyful of water, (around 3 litres) specially if you are working in a heated environment and see the difference. If not better, go to your physician for further investigations. All the best.

Trusting a friend is good to some extent. But, too much of the same will lead you to dependancy which may cause problems like yours. It seems to me that your social network is small and shallow. Try to share your common issues like emotions, likes and dislikes, view and ideas not only with that particular friend, but also with other friends. And relatives/parents. Try to use separate beds and maintain a distance between your friend. Get married as soon as possible. You will automatically be diverted and be free. Attachment gives pain, whereas detachment gives emotional freedom.

I am suffering from anxiety my brain think so much negative like death and bad health.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
I am suffering from anxiety my brain think so much negative like death and bad health.
Anxiety is a very normal emotion, which gives rise to feelings of nervousness every now and then. An anxiety disorder is a serious medical condition in which people experience a high degree of distress and mental trauma, which causes difficulties in leading a normal life. People suffering from this medical condition experience high levels of anxiety and nervousness almost all the time. Here are the symptoms that indicate you're suffering from anxiety disorder. 1. Excessive worry - This condition persists if you worry about the day to day activities a bit too much on a regular basis. It is identified when you start taking too much stress about very petty things, which tends to affect you in an adverse manner. A noticeable sign of excessive worry can be too much fatigue. 2. Sleep problems - Problems falling asleep at the right time and problems in maintaining a sound sleep are two signs that indicate you have an anxiety disorder. 3. Irrational fears - This symptom is not generalized; instead, it is specific and subjective in relation to a particular thing or situation. The fears that are experienced under this category are sudden and unexpected in nature and there is no fixed rationale behind these fears. 4. Muscle tension - Muscle discomfort and pain is one of the leading physiological causes of an anxiety disorder. The pain felt is chronic and pervasive, and is very common among people facing situations of anxiety. If you are exposed to constant periods of anxiety, you will experience fatigue, muscle pains and unwillingness to work. 5. Chronic indigestion - Problems related to the digestive system are also a sign of anxiety disorder. In this case, you may face constant digestive problems accompanied by a common disorder called IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). IBS refers to an anxiety situation in the digestive tract, which is characterized by stomach aches, cramping, bloating, gas, constipation, and/or diarrhea. Apart from the above-mentioned symptoms, other symptoms of an anxiety disorder include stage fright, self- consciousness, panic attacks, memory flashbacks, perfectionism, compulsive behaviors, self- doubt, and such others. Symptoms vary depending on the type of anxiety disorder, but general symptoms include: •Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness. •Problems sleeping. •Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet. •Shortness of breath. •Heart palpitations. •An inability to be still and calm. •Dry mouth. •Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. “Anxiety is a normal, predictable part of life. However, “people with an anxiety disorder are essentially phobic about the feeling state of anxiety.” And they’ll go to great lengths to avoid it. Some people experience generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), excessive anxiety about real-life concerns, such as money, relationships, health and academics, Others struggle with society anxiety, and worry about being evaluated or embarrassing themselves, he said. People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) might become preoccupied with symmetry or potential contamination. “The bottom line is that people can experience anxiety, and anxiety disorders, related to just about anything. Most of these steps contribute to a healthy and fulfilling life, overall. For instance, “making some basic lifestyle changes can do wonders for someone coping with elevated anxiety,” Take these steps from today. 1. Take a deep breath. “Deep diaphragmatic breathing triggers our relaxation response, switching from our fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system, to the relaxed, balanced response of our parasympathetic nervous system,” according to, clinical psychologists. Who have suggested the following exercise, which you can repeat several times: Inhale slowly to a count of four, starting at your belly and then moving into your chest. Gently hold your breath for four counts. Then slowly exhale to four counts. 2. Get active. “One of the most important things one can do [to cope with anxiety] is to get regular cardiovascular exercise,” For instance, a brisk 30- to 60-minute walk “releases endorphins that lead to a reduction in anxiety.” You can start today by taking a walk. Or create a list of physical activities that you enjoy, and put them on your schedule for the week. Other options include: running, rowing, rollerblading, hiking, biking, dancing, swimming, surfing, step aerobics, kickboxing and sports such as soccer, tennis and basketball. 3. Sleep well. Not getting enough sleep can trigger anxiety. If you’re having trouble sleeping, tonight, engage in a relaxing activity before bedtime, such as taking a warm bath, listening to soothing music or taking several deep breaths. And, if you’re like many people with anxiety whose brains start buzzing right before bed, jot down your worries earlier in the day for 10 to 15 minutes, or try a mental exercise like thinking of fruits with the same letter. 4. Challenge an anxious thought. “We all have moments wherein we unintentionally increase or maintain our own worry by thinking unhelpful thoughts. These thoughts are often unrealistic, inaccurate, or, to some extent, unreasonable,” Thankfully, we can change these thoughts. The first step is to identify them. Consider how a specific thought affects your feelings and behaviours. Is it helpful or unhelpful? These are the types of thoughts you want to challenge. Therefore it is suggested asking yourself: “Is this worry realistic?” “Is this really likely to happen?” “If the worst possible outcome happens, what would be so bad about that?” “Could I handle that?” “What might I do?” “If something bad happens, what might that mean about me?” “Is this really true or does it just seem that wa Then, “reframe or correct that thought to make it more accurate, realistic and more adaptive.” Here’s one example: “I would feel embarrassed if I tripped on the stage, but that’s just a feeling; it wouldn’t last forever, and I would get through it.” 5. Say an encouraging statement. Positive, accurate statements can help to put things into perspective. See these examples: “Anxiety is just a feeling, like any other feeling.” and “This feels bad, but I can use some strategies to [cope with] it.” 6. Stay connected to others. “Social support is vital to managing stress,” Today, call a loved one, schedule a Skype date or go to lunch with a close friend. “Talking with others can do a world of good.” Another option is to get together and engage in an activity that improves your anxiety, such as taking a walk, sitting on the beach or going to a yoga class. 7. Avoid caffeine. Managing anxiety is as much about what you do as what you don’t do. And there are some substances that exacerbate anxiety. Caffeine is one of those substances. As said, “The last thing people with anxiety need is a substance that makes them feel more amped up, which is exactly what caffeine does.” 8. Avoid mind-altering substances. “While drugs and alcohol might help to reduce anxiety in the short term, they often do just the opposite in the long term,” Even the short-term effect can be harmful. Experts have treated countless clients whose first panic attack occurred while they were taking drugs such as marijuana, ecstasy or LSD. “Panic attacks are bad enough if you are straight and sober, so imagine how bad they are if you are high, and can’t get un-high until the drug wears off.” 9. Do something you enjoy. Engaging in enjoyable activities helps to soothe your anxiety. For instance, today, you might take a walk, listen to music or read a book, 10. Take a break. It’s also helpful to build breaks into your day. As it is said, this might be a “simple change of pace or scenery, enjoying a hobby, or switching ‘to-do’ tasks.” “Breaking from concerted effort can be refreshing.” 11. Problem-solve. It is suggested considering how you can address the stressors that are causing your anxiety. Today, make a list of these stressors and next to each one, jot down one or two solutions. 12. Pick up a book. There are many valuable resources on anxiety, which teach you effective coping skills. Some recommended are Dying of Embarrassment for people with social anxiety; The BDD Workbook for body dysmorphic disorder; The Imp of the Mind and The OCD Workbook for obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is suggested Stop Obsessing for adults with OCD (and Up and Down the Worry Hill for kids with OCD). For people with panic attacks, it is suggested Don’t Panic: Taking Control of Anxiety Attacks. For a general overview of cognitive-behavioural therapy for anxiety, 13. Engage in calming practices. “Meditation, yoga, or other calming practices can help minimize anxiety in both the short and long term.” Sign up for a yoga class or watch a yoga video online. (Curvy Yoga is a wonderful and sizes.) Meditate right now for just three minutes resource for yoga for all shapes 14. Contact a therapist. “Sometimes anxiety can be difficult to manage without professional help,” Many organizations include databases of providers who specialize in anxiety (along with helpful information). 15. Accept your anxiety. “If you really want to effectively manage your anxiety, the key is to accept it,” This might sound counterintuitive. But anxiety, “in and of itself,” isn’t the real problem. Instead, it’s our attempts at controlling and eliminating it, he said. “Not accepting these unwanted inner experiences is the actual source of so much of our self-induced suffering.” Accepting anxiety doesn’t mean “resign[ing] ourselves to a life of anxious misery. It simply means that we are better off recognizing and fully accepting the existence of anxiety and other uncomfortable emotional states that are inevitable, but transitory,” So if you experience anxiety today, simply observe it. “Think of it like a wave of the ocean; allow it to come in, experience it, and ride it out.” Anxiety can feel overwhelming. It can feel like chains around your feet, weighing you down. But by taking small steps – like the ones above – you can minimize your anxiety and cope effectively.
