1) Grains And Beans: A number of grains and beans are ‘complete’ proteins but they tend to be unbalanced in their amino acid ratios. What this means is that you have to eat them in proper combinations. Another drawback is that you have to eat them in greater quantities than animal proteins to obtain an equivalent protein value. They are good for sedentary people with a lower requirement of daily protein but are inadequate for you. If you want to build muscle mass, you need a more concentrated source of protein and a better mix of branch chain amino acids that beans and grains do not provide. 2) Legumes These generally don’t have all the nine essential amino acids. They contain different amounts of protein depending on the type. The green, red, yellow, brown or black, lentils offer over 17 g of protein per cup. One cup of boiled lentils contains about 18 g protein on an average. You can turn to kidney beans or ‘rajma’ for a protein boost though. One cup boiled kidney beans contain 15 g of protein. 3) Rice This Indian diet staple contains too few proteins by itself. It only has a protein content of 5-7 percent. However, you can have the rice and yellow pea protein combo to boost available protein. Rice protein is high in the sulfur amino acids cysteine and methionine, but tends to be low in lysine and this negatively impacts its bioavailability. And pea protein has a good quantity of lysine and lower quantities of cysteine and methionine. So, these two complement each other perfectly by offering a Protein Efficiency Ratio than rivals dairy and egg. The rice/pea combo also has a good branch chain amino acid profile. 4) Peas One cup of peas gives you about 7 g of protein. So, you can definitely try it out as it is low in carbs. 5) Soybeans Soyabeans are one of the richest plant-based protein sources. You’ll get more than 28.5 g of protein from 1 cup of boiled soybeans. The problem with soy is that you can’t have it in large quantities as it may damage your liver in the long run. 5) Dairy A cup of low- fat milk provides 8 g protein and 5-10 g of fat. It has a biological value of 80-90 and a net protein utilisation of about 81. We recommend normal milk with enough fats, as fat is actually insulin-neutral which means it does not trigger the body’s fat-saving hormone Insulin. The protein in milk called casein makes up roughly 80 percent of the protein found in all dairy products. And it is a good protein as it is a slow-digesting because it forms “clumps” in the stomach that take 5-7 hours to digest. When you eat casein, your blood amino acid levels rise extremely slowly and they also stay elevated for longer which means you can work out harder for longer periods. 6) Cottage Cheese Cottage cheese’s muscle-building powers come from two different components- casein, the slow-digesting dairy protein and the good bacteria. These bacteria help you break down and absorb all the nutrients you need to get your protein intake. So, nutritionally, Indian vegetarian diets are a mixed bag. Casein in dairy is good for you but milk is not easily digested by adults. And rice is low in proteins. And you need good amounts of Vitamin A to digest protein that you ingest. Cereal, bean and vegetable proteins may contain all the essential amino acids, but the quantity of the three branch amino acids is often less than ideal, affecting their bioavailability. But, what about animal protein- how good is it? It does contain all the essential amino acids that plant protein often does not. Let’s take a look- 7) Meat And Beef On the plus side, meat and beef protein is complete and has all the essential amino acids. And it’s not particularly allergenic. But on the other hand, it’s not particularly easy to absorb- it has about 20% usable protein by weight. It is low in micro-nutrients like vitamins and is high in calories and saturated fat. And it is fairly hard to digest, especially if you are older. To cut it down further- you will get about 23 g of protein in a three ounce serving of beef, along with about 15 g of fat. 8) Chicken And Turkey These two provide about 27 g of protein in a three- ounce serving, along with about 2-3 g of fat. 9) Fish Is high in protein – 5 g in a three- ounce serving, it is low in carbs and has low levels of saturated fats. Plus it has Omega-3 fatty acids, nature’s wonder nutrients. 10) Pork The protein is good but the fat content is a bit on the high side. 11) Eggs These are considered as ideal protein foods by experts but can cause allergies. One egg contains 6.2g protein. A word of caution here- Recent studies have proven conclusively that eating more protein than recommended has been linked with weight gain, cancer and diabetes. Plus all animal foods are usually contaminated with pesticides, antibiotics and other chemicals like Arsenic which are added to make the chicken flesh look soft and fresh.

A Jet Airways aircraft Boeing 737, travelling from Mumbai to Jaipur with 166 passengers on board, had to return to the airport as the crew forgot to turn on the cabin pressurisation system which maintains air pressure inside an aircraft to a comfortable level.

The mistake led to several passengers suffering from nosebleed, bleeding from ear and severe headache. Some of the passengers were even admitted to the hospital with these complaints.

What does Air Pressure mean?

Air pressure, also known as Barometric pressure or atmospheric pressure, is the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on earth. It is measured by a barometer in units called millibars. The standard or average atmospheric pressure at sea level on the earth is 1013.25 millibars per square inch, which is about 14.7 pounds.

What are the causes of Air Pressure?

Air pressure is caused due to air molecules present in the atmosphere. The higher the altitude, the lower is the air pressure, which makes it tough for humans to survive without proper equipment.

The aircrafts use cabin pressure by pumping in ‘bleed air’ to maintain barometric pressure. This pressurisation becomes highly necessary when the aircraft touches altitude above 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) from sea level.

What health issues do low Air Pressure cause?

Low air pressure can cause mild as well as death threatening conditions which include:

Blood pressure: As the air pressure reduces, the blood pressure also starts falling. It can be observed if you are feeling dizziness or a blurred vision.

Severe headache: Change in barometric pressure can lead to severe headache or migraines by creating a pressure difference between the atmosphere and air-filled sinuses.

Joint pain: As per a study, the change in barometric pressure increases the severity of joint pain and arthritis.

Blood sugar: Change in air pressure bring cold fronts , which is not good for a diabetic person.

Hypoxia: The lower oxygen pressure reduces the oxygen tension in the lungs, subsequently in the brain. This can lead to dimmed vision, sluggish thinking, loss of consciousness and eventually death.

Altitude sickness: In the most common response to hypoxia, the human body starts hyperventilation. It does help in partially restoring oxygen in the blood but it also leads to carbon dioxide to out-gas which increases the blood pH level. In this condition, people may suffer fatigue, nausea, headache, sleeplessness and even pulmonary oedema.

Decompression sickness: It leads to tiredness, forgetfulness, headache, stroke, thrombosis and subcutaneous itching.

Barotrauma: As the aircraft climbs or descends, passengers may face discomfort or acute pain as gases trapped inside their bodies try to expand. The most common problems faced due to this situation include air trapped in the middle ear or paranasal sinuses by a blocked Eustachian tube. It can also cause pain in gastrointestinal tract or even the teeth.

What emergency steps should be taken in situation of low air pressure?

The effects of low air pressure may vary from person to person. Some people do not feel any health problems even while being at an altitude as high as 8,000 feet while some would start feeling restless from 5,000 feet onwards.

There may be many precautions including carrying an oxygen cylinder always while travelling to the high altitude places. In aircrafts, oxygen masks are provided to each passenger but if you are planning to go on a trek, you must know some important aspects of surviving at high altitude places. Have a look:

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Avoid switching on the heater
  • Take proper sleep at night with a pillow under your head
  • Keep yourself hydrated and do not over-hydrate
  • Do not overeat
  • Never exert yourself

Emergency tips to keep yourself safe at high altitude places:

  • Ginger or ginger water
  • Garlic
  • Clove
  • Lavender oil

These things can help you keep your mind and body fit even at the reasonably high altitude places.

The bladder walls turn stiff because of this which makes it difficult for the bladder to expand. Interstitial cystitis may be caused by a defect in the lining of the bladder.
  2. Urinary tract infectionUrinary tract infections can affect a person at any age and may develop in the ureter, urethra, bladder or kidneys. However, it is most commonly seen in the bladder. This infection is caused by bacteria that enter the body through the urinary tract.
  3. Bladder cancerCancer that develops in the bladder is known as bladder cancer. Transitional cell carcinoma is the most common type of bladder cancer cell. This can make urination less painful as concentrated urine may be acidic and difficult to pass. Water also helps prevent the formation of kidney stones and thus helps the kidneys function optimally.
  2. Urinate frequently: Do not try to control your urine. Holding urine in for extended periods of time allows bacteria to multiply within the body. It is also important to urinate after intercourse as sexual activities can push the bacteria present on the skin deeper into your body. This is important for both men and women.
  3. Dress comfortably: Avoid synthetic, tight fitting underwear and clothes. Instead wear, loose, comfortable clothes that are preferably made out of cotton. These clothes will help keep your skin dry and not allow bacteria to breed.
  4. Pain relievers and heating pads: Sometimes, antibiotics can take a day or two before addressing bladder pain. In such cases, pain relievers can help deal with the discomfort and cramps. Heating pads can also help soothe abdominal and lower back pain that results from bladder infections.

Some skin-friendly food choices include: yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apricots, and sweet potatoes. Spinach and other dark green and leafy vegetables. Tomatoes. Unicondylar Knee Replacement - An Overview!

Knee problems can be quite annoying but if this problem becomes regular, it brings life to a standstill. The movement becomes restricted. Many associated problems slowly crop up. Thus, it is best to nip the problem in the bud. While some people might experience a problem in the full knee, in some people, only a single compartment (tissue or cartilage) of the knee may be affected. For such patients, Unicondylar Knee Replacement comes as a blessing.

The Unicondylar knee replacement, also known as the Unicompartmental Knee Replacement or Partial Knee Replacement is the most sought-after knee replacement surgery. The surgery involves replacing only the worn out or affected part (cartilage) of the knee, thereby preserving the healthier cartilages and tissues of the knee.

In the last few years, incidences of osteoarthritis have been on the rise. The unicondylar knee replacement surgery has made life a lot easier for people suffering from osteoarthritis (a condition where the articular cartilage or the connective tissue present within the knee joint begins to wear out).

  • People with an unstable or weak knee should avoid this surgery.

Pre- surgery, a person should

  • Avoid taking any anti-inflammatory and herbal medicines (minimum 10 days before the surgery).
  • Get yourself medically examined for any health complications (that might interfere with surgery).
  • Follow a healthy lifestyle. Avoid smoking and drinking.

Procedure:

  • For the surgery, the patient is either given a general anesthesia or a spinal (or epidural) one.
  • Next, a compressing device (tourniquet) is put around the upper part of the thigh. This is done to avoid excessive blood loss during the surgery.
  • A 7cm incision is made over the knee.
  • The damaged parts (bones and cartilages) of the knee are then carefully removed.
  • The surgeon next replaces the excised parts with metallic implants. Once the metallic part fits into the knee, it is adhered to the bone with (or without) bone cement.
  • The surgeon then stitches the incised area, followed by dressing and bandage.

The recovery time is quick, between 3-4 weeks. However, the concerned person may require physiotherapy for the next 3-6 months.

Advantages:

  • The surgery is less invasive with a quick recovery time.
  • The surgery replaces only the affected knee part.
  • Blood transfusions are seldom required.
  • A person gets back to normal life faster.
  • The surgery requires less time (~ 1-2 hours).

You need to be careful about:

  1. Infection at the incision site, though it is very rare.
  2. Injury in blood vessel, ligaments, or nerves.
  3. Fracture in the bone

PCOD - How Can Panchkarma Therapy Help Treat It?

Polycystic ovarian disease or PCOD is a disease of the ovary that is characterized by the larger size of the ovary, fluid-filled sacs in the ovary, multiple cysts etc. In this condition, the ovary is covered by a white, tough, and thick outer covering. PCOD can have many implications including hormonal imbalance, menstruation cycle related disorders, insulin production and its usage etc. Ayurveda explains PCOD as a Kapha disorder and aims at clearing the obstruction of Vatadosha of the pelvis, normalize the menstrual cycle and balance metabolism.

Causes of PCOS
As per modern science the cause of PCOS is not fully understood. It is unknown.

  1. Hereditary – Genetics may be a factor. PCOS seems to run in families, so your chance of having it is higher if other women in your family have it or have irregular periods or diabetes. PCOS can be passed down from either your mother's or father's side.
  2. Hormonal imbalance – In PCOS there is abnormality in secretion of androgens, luteinizing hormone(LH), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), prolactin. This may cause you to stop ovulating.
  3. Insulin resistance- Your body may have problems in using insulin leading to abnormal blood sugar levels. This increases the levels of insulin in your body, which increases androgen secretion again leading to hormonal fluctuations. The exact reason why these hormonal changes occur isn't known.
  4. Mild inflammation- Women with PCOS have mild inflammation, this type of low-grade inflammation stimulates polycystic ovaries to produce androgens in the body.

Ayurvedic approach in treating PCOD

Ayurveda looks at a holistic approach of treatment wherein the mind and the body are treated as one. The first step towards treating PCOS disorder is to reduce body weight along with lifestyle modification. The next step aims at countering the condition of PCOD with Panchakarma - a century-old treatment mechanism of Ayurveda. Some of the Panchakarma methods used in treating PCOD include Vamana, Vasthi, Virechana, Nasya etc. Before applying the Panchakarma therapy, oral administration of medicated oil is necessary. PCOS is a complex disorder which falls in artava kshaya, anartava, rasa vaha sroto dushti and medo vaha sroto dushti.

There is a definite cure for PCOS in ayurveda. But you must be patiently strong and willing as treatment may extend upto 6 months or 1 year.

Treatment includes panchakarma and internal medication. Panchakarma procedures like udvartana, vamana, virechana and basti.

  1. Uthara Vasthi: This procedure is very different from normal Vasthi in terms of its administration, ingredients, and quantity. This medication is applied to the uterus through the vagina. This is one of the best therapy when it comes to treating the polycystic ovarian syndrome.
  2. Vamana: Suitable herbal medication is prescribed to induce oral vomiting. It ensures that the toxin from inside the body comes out before the medication takes its effect on the source.
  3. Virechana: This is one of the cleansing methods that is prescribed in Panchakarma therapy. A patient is given herbal purgatives in the form of medicated oil to clear blockages of the Vata Dosha.
  4. Basti: This is the form of Panchakarma therapy that is meant for cleaning the alimentary canal. It has a calming effect on the Vata aggravation. This is the mode of medication where medicated herbal oil is injected through the anus. This procedure in Ayurveda is known as Basti. This is followed by another round of oil medication that has a mixture of herbal decoction, medicated oil, herbal paste, rock salt etc.
