Hi yes there are all possibilities that you have the same experience whenever you take alcohol, specifically if you lose control over the quantity. But it may not happen if you are smoking tobacco. So better avoid the habit and even if plan to continue with the habit exercise complete control over the quantity of intake.

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. At young age, memory problems like amnesia, dementia or alzheimer's are not common. Many young people do complain having problems with memory. These problems are due to either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. Anyhow, there is nothing to worry. Most of the psychological problems can be cured with scientific therapy methods. Take care.

1.First of all try to enjoy or find enjoymnt in what you are doing because if we dont enjoy our work we will find excuses and moreover we will exhaut early. 2.Daily morning 15 minutes each ALOM VILOM PRANAYAAM and KAPAL BHATI PRANAYAM 3.Eat healthy/Balanced diet and avoid fried, junk and oily food, avoid overeating Balanced Diet= 60% Carbohydrates + 20% Fats + 20% Proteins (A)Carbohydrates: Our main source of energy. Stored in liver and muscles. Carbohydrates are used the most by our body duringexercise. Hence, it is important for people who exercise regularly to consume a diet rich in carbohydrates. (a) Instant/rapid carbohydrates energy sources: Banana, Milk, Sweets, Sugarcane juice. (b) Slow carbohydrates energy sources: Beans, Bread, Cereals, Potato, Pulses, Rice. (B) Proteins: Essential for growth, repair of muscle, skin, hair and body tissues. Protein deficiency leads to low immunity, hairfall, feeling of tiredness. Proteins are not stored in our body as any excess protein is converted to energy or fat. Hence, a person requires protein intake every day. When the body does not get enough carbohydrates to fuel itself, it falls back on protein bank. That is why people who follow starvation diets or go on fasting lose muscle tissue. (a) Major protein sources: Egg white(white portion), Milk, Soybeans/Soymilk, Fish, Cheese, Tofu. (b) Other protein sources: Beans with wheat, Nuts, Curd, Yogurt (Dahi). (C) Fats: Required and healthy when taken in small amounts. Excess fat leads to weight gain, increase in bad cholesterol (LDL) and heartproblems (a) Major fats sources: Egg yolk (Yellow portion), Avocados, Whole Milk, Butter, Cheese, Nuts. (b) Other fats sources: Corn, Vegetable/Olive oil, Biscuits, Flaxseeds(San Beej). (D) Vitamins and Minerals: Critical for normal functioning of organs and processes within our body. They do not provide energy directly but work behind the scenes to break down food into energy. (E) Fiber: It helps retain water and in making our stools softer to avoid constipation. Intake should be 25 to 35 grams a day. (F) Calories: A measure of how much energy food or drink contains. On an average, a man needs around 2,000 calories a day and a woman 1700 calories a day to maintain his weight and good health. Number varies by person depending upon weight, age and how active the lifestyle is. (G) Guideline: Each day have 3 main meals, 2 snacks, 5 pieces of fruit and at least 1 glass of milk. 4.Always usestairs rather than lift 5.Try to help your parent in house work 6,Be attentive, alert and focused in what you are doing.Mean avoid day dreaming 7.Drink lots of water and 2 glass milk daily. 8.Always work with your target and motive towards your aim.Dream of your aim rather than beyond your aim 9.Set up small goals in your life and achieve these one by one while moving towards your aim. 10.Always keep in your mind that life is very harsh and you have to nitch a name for yourself otherwise you will be lot in this harsh world like most of other. 11..Always keep the above 10 points in your mind which will help you to remain focused and once focused ,you will automatically gain stamina aand power to do work. 12. . BRAMARI PRANAYAM or Bee Breath 1.Close your eyes. Focus on your breathing. 2.Place your thumbs in your ears, your index fingers above your eyebrows, and your remaining along the sides of your nose. Have you had this fear before, especially during your late adolescence? If that is the case it may have some earlier origins, due to some trauma in your life. Even so, you can do several things to combat it and live a normal life and career: talk to a counselor regularly and see what you identify as its source and its modus operandi in your life. Do regular and vigorous exercise daily. Sleep well and eat well too. Attend some emotional management course with a professional. Take some multivitamins with some calcium tablets, the combination will de-stress you. Reduce the pressure in your life both at home and at work. Life is full of difficulties. Those who are good at responding to it by discipline will overcome the challenges that life poses.

this is a sign of anxiety. You need to practice breathing exercises, listen to relaxing music, exercise regularly or practice yoga. Medicines under expert supervision may be needed if problems persist. Just to be sure get a hemogram, serum TSH and vitamin B12 levels done.

Dear, memory power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. Take care.

Hi,am 45 year male, married have a 18 year son. From childhood used to write only in capital letters.Difficult to write in small caps & running letters. But from past years becoming difficult to write certain numbers like 3,6,8,9,0 and letters like B,S and few more.It takes more time to start & write above mentioned numbers & letters.Becomes more difficult to write if someone is watching me while writing, can't write correctly. Please suggest. Thanks Samir mehta

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

There are some people who have become habituated to write in capital letters. You have been doing so for many years and it has become entrenched in your writing style. To change it now will be very, very difficult unless you are willing to go to calligraphy classes and work at it for a long time. Anyway, why would you want to change your style now, when you have managed for so many years?! The writing itself may not be the problem as much as it seems more psychological. Just to rule out any neurological problem you may get an examination from a neurologist. Your mind could be playing all kinds of tricks with you and making you very conscious of being inadequate and different from others. As you have mentioned that it becomes more difficult, if someone else is watching you. If your mind decides that something is going to be difficult, then it will make that difficulty become real. Are you under any kind of stress, especially to do with fear? You may be very suggestible under fear. This obsession can be quite a handicap, but of your own making. Talk to a psychologist or counselor to identify any underlying causes to your problem and have that sorted out. You will find that the difficulty with those numbers will also disappear.

I'm unable to sleep deeply since a week. It's like I take naps in the nights. I was tensed for my studies because of the lengthy course when my exam dates weren't published. But now as they are declared, I feel relaxed but still can't sleep. I don't know the reason. My doctor advised me to meet a psychologist, who has given me some medicines and now I am able to sleep properly as well. My query is that will I get habitual to these medicines and depend upon them throughout my life? Or is it okay to take them? Also suggest me what should I do to sleep properly as when I don't, my head start aching badly as I have migraine too. Suggest me some natural stress relievers as I think stress is the reason for my sleeplessness. Also if you find any other reason please let e know.

Dear Aayushi. Your present problem is stress related. Please understand stress. Stress is simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium. In other words, it's an omnipresent part of life. A stressful event can trigger the “fight-or-flight” response, causing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol to surge through the body. A little bit of stress, known as “acute stress,” can be exciting—it keeps us active and alert. But long-term, or “chronic stress,” can have detrimental effects on health. You may not be able to control the stressors in your world, but you can alter your reaction to them. Physical exercise, creative activities, deep breathing, being away from the situation for sometime etc can help you tackle the stress. Stress disorder is usually treated with a combination of psychiatric medicines, psychotherapy, life style changes, meditation and exercise. Once you make the necessary amendments in your life with the help of the above said therapies and life style changes, learn how to manage the depressive episodes without medicines and learn to relax, the medicines can be weaned off over a period of one year. There are no side effects for the medicines and if you continue for more than one month, you will be addicted. Please consult a psychologist online or in person for advise, counseling and therapy. Take care.

He used to smoke alot for 2 years. Now he want to stop smoking but he can't give up. Please tell me how to get rid of that.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You have to try and try again till you succeed. You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact, these conditions can exist all through the day, unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heartbeat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact, it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chew gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i. E. At least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

I am 28 years old. I have smoking habit. I need to forget that habit. Pls help me.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Happy to know that you want to forget smoking. Please try to stop smoking at the earliest. It has many health benefits in the long run. When you stop suddenly, you may get withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, increased hunger, sleep disturbance, headache, impatience, anxiety, depression, etc. If you have them please don’t get back to smoking, take nicotine gum or lozenge or patch. They are available in all medical shops. You don’t need a prescription from doctors. Use 2 mg gum if you smoke less than 25 cigarettes/day. Use 4 mg gum if you smoke more than 25 cigarettes/day. First 6 weeks, use 1 gum every 1 – 2 hours. Reduce it in week 7 – 9 to one gum every 2 – 4 hours. In week 10 – 12, reduce it further to 1 gum every 4 -8 hours. By 3 months, you will be able to stop both cigarettes and gum fully without any withdrawal symptoms. Please feel confident that you can do it and give yourself some gift for doing it like vacation or books or new mobile. Smoking is a chronic relapsing condition like diabetes and B.P. So please don’t worry if you restart smoking. Start all over again to stop. You will learn the situations that make you smoke and avoid them. Please think of health benefits and money saved often. Plan how to avoid relapsing situations, like smoking friends, along with alcohol, stressful feeling or depression. Delay, drink, deep breathe, distract and discuss are the helpful tips. Increase of non smoking zones, gift yourself for stopping smoking. Even chewing cinnamon may delay. Please remember that the urge to smoke comes and goes like waves. Delay and see whether it goes away. It will like a passing cloud.

Dear lybrate-user, Welcome to Lybrate. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. I suggest you to consult a psychologist or de addiction therapist. Take care.
