I have been smoking weed on and off for past 2-3 years. When I do it, I do it extensively in a bong and take equivalent to 3-4 joints per day. This goes for a month then I go back to joints. Bong side affects seems much worse. I don't want to really consult a doctor. After leaving for 4-5 days. Things seems to get comparatively normal. I want to know how much affective damage I might have taken yet ie permanent or irreparable. And will it affect me in future?

Smoking cannabis (weed) increases the chance of number of psychiatric disorders, of which the serious consequence is Psychosis (hearing voices and having false beliefs - madness in layterm, also you develop depression and amotivation syndrome (not having any goal with lack of emotions and you become lazy like a sloth). So, it is best to stay away from it at the earliest.

There is a psychiatrist who told me to take etilaam 0.5 twice a day as I'm suffering from generalized S.A. But I don't want to take this medicine regularly because of negative reviews as these medicines are very addictive, occurs memory loss problem too. So my query is that can I take etizolam medicine whenever it is required (like in interviews and group discussion ).is it safe to take this medicine before going to stressful situation? Thanks in advance.

It is advisable to take the medicine as prescribed by your treating doctor as the treating doctor has assessed your condition face to face. But, also try considering non pharmacological means like some counseling sessions which would help you control your anxiety on long run, which would further enhance your confidence levels. Your doubts are genuine as the medicine has addiction potential when used more than 4 weeks. So,again discuss the same issue with your treating doctor.

From the above symptoms you mentioned. It appears you r going through a phase of depression and anxiety. In depression you have a sad mood, loss of interest in daily activities, and experience loss of energy on doing very little physical activity. Also, you sleep more or don’t sleep at all, your appetite increases or decreases. Sometimes you don’t know the reason why you r getting depressed. The reasons could be psychological (not able to deal with problems in life or if your expectations are not met) / biological (hormonal ,medical reasons, heritable) social (source of stress is from outside like from other people. Lack of love from parents or other people who you r attached or bullying by others etc ). So, in this Situation you should identify the reasons for your stress and deal with it. U can take help of a psychiatrist or psychologist who will help you identify your issue and guide you properly through counselling or by prescribing medicines or doing both. Also, it could be because of anxiety sometimes or even a personality disorder. So additional informational is required to diagnose your condition.

I have a anxiety disorder what is the procedure to cure can anxiety cause weight loss?

There r many good medicines that are available to treat anxiety. These medicines are usually prescribed by a psychiatrist after thorough assessment of your condition. And along with medication you must also get counselling. In some anxiety disorder counselling is the first choice of treatment but over all you will get best results wirh both medication and counselling. Yes anxiety can cause weight loss. Some anxiety can occur in conditions like thyroid abnormalities. So evaluating for such conditions is also necessary. Generally most people donot have an underlying medical condition. But anxious people tend to be apprehensive and get over stimulated leading to excessive spending of energy and also they get digestive problems (for which they reduce food intake) and thus over all leading to weight reduction. In summary consult a psychiatrist and get your condition diagnosed and start medicines and take counselling.

Sir one of my relative facing schizophrenia he was afraid not existing thing and fear from people how it cure immediately. Can I know it?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Vijayawada
Your relative has to get treated by a psychiatrist. The medicines that she should use are called antipsychotic drugs and they are prescribed by psychiatrist after detailed assessment. Along with treatment your relative should also get counselling sessions/therapy. Called insight oriented psychotherapy. Initially pts have to use medication for 2 years at least after symptoms have subsided. In general there is no cure for schizophrenia but around 15% of schizophrenia pts recover and return to previous level of functioning. And rest are symptomatic in some way or another. Most importantly medication has to be used everyday without skipping doses and follow up with psychiatrist regularly as pts need dose titration if required. The patient should have good support from family n friends and should be treated with respect.

I assume you have expressed your love to her directly. And if she accepted it. You can confidently tell her about your feelings for her. When both of you r in love .she will not judge you rather she would express her interest/ deny it in a polite way. So, you have nothing to loose. Be confident and talk what you have to talk.

My 12 year old daughter struggling with ocd. Here doc gave her setra 25 mg for a week and from this Monday it's increased to 50 mg. Still no improvement. What to do? How long will it take for the medicine to work?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Vijayawada
It takes a minimum of 6 weeks for the medication to work effectively. If there is no improvement then the doctor will further increase the dose or add an other medication. So, you have to have patience till that time.

Your symptoms suggest you might have a compulsive disorder. Called EXCORIATION (skin picking disorder). It is in some ways similar to OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). The reason for skin picking/scratching is unknown but as you said people get pleasure from picking the skin. I advice you to consult a psychiatrist and get your condition analyzed in detail. And for the marks on your face will have to be treated by a dermatologist. However, the primary treatment is to control your compulsive and repeated picking/scratching of skin through either medication or counselling or both from a psychiatrist.

You should definitely seek help. Some people get depressed without any reason. It is better if you consult a psychiatrist and seek his/her help, as they can help you find the cause for your depression. Sometimes hormonal changes, thyroid abnormalities could be the cause for depression which can be found only through blood tests. So, psychiatrists are specially trained doctors who can evaluate the causes for both physical illness and psychological illness and treat you accordingly.
