Prepping For The Holiday Season - Quick Tips To Maintain Your Health & Fitness Goals!

We have now reached that time of the year when we all look forward to the festivities and celebrations for Christmas. And, it goes without saying that celebrating Christmas is synonymous with parties, which not only involves a get-together but also unlimited dance, food, and drinks. It is also that time of the year when we all forget our resolution of sticking to a healthy diet. But, why waste your entire year’s efforts when you can balance your efforts and at the same time, enjoy the Christmas week?

Surprised? Well, here are some Christmas party tips that will let you enjoy every bit of it without inviting any troubles related to health.

Prepping up for the Party

The most important thing to remember before the party is that you must not skip meals anticipating the high-calorie food that you would have at the party. Stick to your regular meals and also don’t forego your exercise routine.

  • General Tips
    • Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. Consume not just water, but other healthy liquids as well.
    • Before hitting the party, have a small meal that will make you feel satiated. This will help avoid unnecessary snacking.
  • Special Diet Tip: Take juice and tender coconut water as drinks and egg whites, a bowl of soup, fruits, or diet chivda as snacks right before leaving for the party.
  • Cheat Tip: Drink a glass full of buttermilk before leaving for the party. It will keep you satiated and will also help prevent unnecessary bloating after the party.

The Party Day

When you are at the party, make wise choices rather than just gorging on unhealthy and fried snacks. It might seem to be a difficult task, but with a little effort, you can make healthier choices.

  • General Tips
    • Keep your focus on the dance floor and the party, rather than just focussing on what is being served.
    • Refrain from having food items that are deep-fried and choose steamed, boiled, or grilled food items.
    • Choose vegetables and lean meat rather than the noxious red meat.
    • Have salads without the creamy and fat-laden dressing. If pasta is on the menu, go for pasta in the red sauce rather than the cheesy white sauce, extremely high in calories.
    • Keep a check on your portion size by choosing a smaller plate and by sharing your food .
  • Special Diet Tip: Try fresh fruits, green veggies, steamed or boiled food items and whole grains.
  • Cheat Tip: Keep chewing a gum until you really feel like spitting it out. This will help you keep away from high-calorie fried and processed snacks.

Post-Party Recovery

Once the party is over, it is time to detoxify your body and to get back to your original plan. However, it is important to realize that there is no need to have guilty pangs for the food that you had at the party.

  • General Tips
    • Consume home-made food and limit your intake of oil, salt, and sugar.
    • Take green tea, infused water, or just plain water as it will help you to detoxify.
    • Eat whole grains and refrain from having processed food or any food item made of refined flour.
    • Choose whole fruits over fruit juice.
  • Special Diet Tip: Consume idli, poha, upma, or muesli for breakfast, whole grains and fruits for lunch, and dal, soup, curd, and salad for dinner.
  • Cheat Tip: Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up, two hours before every meal, and one hour after every meal. It will detoxify your body fast and keep you energetic throughout the day.

Navratri Fasting - 5 Things You Must Be Careful About!

B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition

Navratri Fasting - 5 Things You Must Be Careful About!

While Navaratri fasting is very popular among the Hindu society, there is a scientific reason behind this fasting. It happens twice in a year during seasonal change. This is the time when the weather changes and the body become vulnerable due to low immunity. This is the reason why food items such as meat, grains, salt etc. are prohibited. Ayush theory suggests that food items such as the onion and salt can infuse negative energy and there are high chances of falling ill. However, the real question remains as to what to eat during the nine days of Navratri. Here is a guideline for the same:

  1. Keep the hydration going: This goes without saying. The level of water consumption and beverages, in general, should be stepped up during this time. While frequent drinking of water comes real handy, drinking lemon water, coconut water, buttermilk and plain milk will ensure that your energy level does not drop and a person can run through the day without any lethargy.
  2. Do not go empty stomach: While rituals can be a binding, it should never be a hindrance to health. Going empty stomach for long can harm the body to a large extent. First, it creates acidity in a person and makes it difficult for a person to digest food when he consumes it. Second, staying empty stomach for too long can cause a tendency to vomit, and leads to nausea and headache.
  3. Avoid fried food: Fried food might taste like heaven after a long day’s fast, but remember it does more harm than good. Food items such as aloo tikki, sabudana and papad are extremely popular among folks during this time, but they are very taxing for the stomach after the fast. Too much oil can lead to an upset stomach and dehydrate the body. Some healthier options include kheer and khichdi. Dairy products have the unique advantage of keeping the stomach full and maintain normal body health.
  4. Increase your intake of fruits: Fruits are one of the best options during the Navaratri fasts. Some of the recommended fruit options include watermelon, apple, mango, musk melon etc. Fruits keep the tummy at peace without any harm. However, people suffering from high blood sugar should ensure that the portion size of fruit consumption is limited. Lemon and any type of citrus food should also be avoided during this time.
  5. Opt for healthy vegetables: While most devotees follow a strict vegetarian diet, some vegetables should get the preference owing to their nutritious benefits to the body. Vegetables such as the potatoes, bottle gourds, pumpkins, carrots, sweet potatoes, cucumber etc. are extremely beneficial for the body. It should be kept in mind that vegetables are boiled or cooked in non-refined oil for a healthy fast. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.

Onset Of Monsoon - Dietary Tips You Must Follow!

Monsoons or rainy seasons is though a favourite amongst all, but it also causes a number of health problems.  So, here are some specific guidelines regarding what to eat and what not to eat during rains.

Nutritional tips in monsoon:

  1. Eat fruits as they help you restore energy. Apples, mangoes, pomegranates, and pears are best suggestible.
  2. Avoid watermelon and muskmelons and also goosing on too many mangoes may cause pimples.
  3. Have medium to low salt food and avoid heavy salty food as they are responsible for high blood pressure and water retention.
  4. Eating watery foods like lassi, watermelon, rice, muskmelon creates swelling in the body. So, better opt for foods which are drying in nature like corn, gram flour, chick pea etc.
  5. Foods such as brown rice, oats, and barley are the best foods one could have in this monsoon.
  6. Body's immunity can be increased by adding a dash of garlic to the soups, stir fries and curries you intake. Opt for yogurt, curd and almonds in your diet instead of milk.
  7. Drink only boiled and purified water to protect yourself from harmful germs and drinking plenty of water keeps your body hydrated.
  8. Vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes, cluster beans, ladies finger, kidney beans, pigeon pea, and sprouted grains must be avoided.
  9. Eat steamed salads instead of raw vegetables as they contain active bacteria and virus that cause bacterial and viral infections.
  10. Have fresh radish juice to fight cold and cough. To reduce mucous formations add pipli and rock salt to warm water. This reduces the natural monsoon ailments. Better eat seasonal fruits as non- seasonal fruits get infested with worms during the monsoons. Pomegranates, lychees, apples, bananas are among the recommended.
  11. Avoid eating fried items, pre-cut fruits and juices from roadside vendors and stick to high quality and hygiene.
  12. Always wash vegetables well and keep them clean especially if they are taken raw. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.

Ever Experienced the Refreshing Flavour When You Drink Matka Water?

B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition

Ever Experienced the Refreshing Flavour When You Drink Matka Water?

Ever experienced the refreshing flavour when you drink matka water?

No, then you should definitely try once.

Oh what a relief if we drink mutkas/mud/clay pot stored water after a tiring work on a sunny day.

Peep on matka water/mud pot water/earthen pot water interesting facts that one should definitely know.

How does the water stored in mud pot remains cool?

I have always wondered" how come the water stored in mud pot remains cool even if you place the mud pot in a place where it has sunshine.

The mud pots have minute pores and when the water is stored in these pots, a small amount of water keeps oozing out. This oozed out water, gets evaporated after absorbing the heat of stored water.
This process is continuously happening, giving us the end result of cooooooool mutka water.

Health benefits of drinking clay pot water:

Let us now peep into health benefits of drinking water stored in earthen/clay/mud pot.

*earthen pots are gifted with self purification of water.
*it maintains alkalinity of water.
*keeps water cool.
*it improves metabolism of body.
*when water is kept in the pot, water gets enriched with magnesium, phosphorus and other important minerals.

Some tips to remember:

Keep your earthen pot germ-free, by scrubbing, cleaning and then drying the matka after each use prior to restocking it. Different types of matkas are available in the market – a small matka is easy to handle while the big one is hard to move around. Select the matka which best suit your needs and your comfort. The breeze will help keep your water cool, so put the pot on a sturdy table near the window and wrap a clean moist cloth around the matka for faster cooling. If you use a matka, keep it covered at all times to prevent insects, dust and other contaminants from falling into it. Never keep matka open, otherwise insects, dust and other contaminants can easily fall into it. Always filter your water before putting it in matka, as storing tap water (unfiltered) does not make sure wholly whether it’s safe to drink or not. Don’t put a glass directly in matka to take out water as it could contaminate the water, instead use a clean, long-handled ladle. Check matka properly while buying that there is no crack, otherwise water can leak out. A cracked matka cannot cool the water effectively.

Where do I buy mud pots?

It is available with all road side vendors, especially during summer you can see more of these mud pots sold by them.
There are lots of varieties in different sizes and shapes are available in the market.
