I am breastfeeding mom bt I think my breast milk is not enough for my baby what to do?

MD Pediatrics
Pediatrician, Vadodara
When the baby is breastfeeding and after few days something around 15 days to be minimum if the baby is gaining good or adequate weight gain then be rest assured. Also if the baby passes 6-7 times urine per day sleeps after taking feeds then you don't have to worry. Kindly speak with your pediatrician to know more. In the initial months of life 15 to 20 grams per day weight gain is good enough after that your doctor will tell you what is the expected weight gain required for the baby.

We consulting doctor but not able understand how long baby have to suffer from nefrotic. We are fully confuse what will be the correct diet to control problem. How long it will take to cure n there is any hope for complete cure. My baby live life like other baby. Medication on going .omnacortil daily consume 50 mg Need a better n safe solution for my baby. Expecting your kind support asap. Regards

Pediatrician, Vadodara
Once a child is diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome the first line of medicines to be started for the child is omnacortil that is a steroid. Nephrotic syndrome may relapse till 15 years of age and sometimes about that. It is very important for the parents to support the child during this phase. As the medicine omnacortil that is going on has got advantages for nephrotic syndrome and disadvantages as side effects. If nephrotic syndrome is not controlled with the help of omnacortil then we have to go for other medicines to control it. But if omnacortil is able to control the disease that is nephrotic syndrome and the side effects are not more then we usually continue omnacortil. You have to visit your pediatrician every 15 to 20 days so as to C for any side effects related to omnacortil which is a steroid. If nephrotic syndrome is controlled then the child can have a normal childhood. It is very important for the parents to encourage the child and at the same time not lose hope as after some years nephrotic syndrome does get cured.

It is important to give exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months of age if you give only your breast milk then there is no need to worry and there are very very less chances of infection. There is no need to give outside water of any type of supplements which might lead to infection and vomiting. Simple multivitamins and Vitamin D might be needed as prescribed by your pediatrician. It is important to burp the child after every episode of breastfeeding to remove the excess amount of air that the child has swallowed with breastfeeding. If the burping is not done properly the air remains in the stomach and later goes into the intestine this leads to decrease the amount of milk intake by the baby as well as increase chances of vomiting. Burping should be done for approximately 10 to 15 minutes and if the baby is more prone to vomiting then it can be continued for 20 to 30 minutes. This decreases the chances of vomiting to a large extent even after doing this the vomiting persists then kindly meet your pediatrician. He will assess the child and guide you accordingly. Also after exclusive breastfeeding the motions are usually Semi solid to liquid. If you are confident that you have been given only your breast feeding then the doctor is confident that the baby will not have any type of infection and the vomiting and loose stool that happens might be normal.

Since there are temperature changes it is very important to take care of your child so that the temperature variation does not affect them. As the child now has cough and cold so better to consult a pediatrician. The vomiting was due to cough known as post tussive vomiting. The vomiting will subside as soon as the cough is taken care of. Also it is important to show to a doctor because after examination only he will be able to ascertain that the patient is having any changes of dengue or not or whether any medical laboratory test is needed.

My daughter is 23 days old. I feed her with breast milk and formulated milk. Will it have a bad effect on her health?

Exclusive breastfeeding should be given till 6 months of age. If the position and attachment of giving breastfeeding is right then there is no need to give any top milk of formula milk. Mother should be encouraged to give exclusive breastfeeding there is no need to give any extra water also because 80% of the milk contains water. Whenever we are giving top Milk or any other thing through the mouth it increases the chances of infection injection into the body leading to other infections like loose stool vomiting. Also for the optimal growth of the baby breast milk should be given exclusively for 6 months. If the baby is gaining weight adequately ,passing urine 6 to 7 times per day ,sleeps after taking feed then these are some of the signs of adequacy of breastfeeding and then there is no need to give any extra formula feeds.

The acid ingestion might have caused injury to babies mouth and stomach and food pipe (esophagus). It will take time to heal and after that the baby should be fine. If there are any complications or not in the future due to ingestion of acid will beknown as she grows up. It all depends on the amount of injury caused by the acid ingestion. Since she has been discharged within 3-4 days so I expect she will do fine in the future.

There will always be variation by which the child feeds. She may feed 1hrly, 2hrly or 3rly or 4hrly. She will take when she is hungry so do no be stressed. She will take amount of milk which she requires. IF there is adequate weight gain and 6-7 urine passage per day then she is getting adequate milk. Infants usually sleep after taking milk so rest assured. Also many infants cry before passing urine and that is perfectly alright. Even after passing urine if she is crying then kindly check her local urinary passage parts as there might be rash which may be causing burning sensation leading to excessive crying.

The weight should be around 5.6 kg. But 5 kg is not bad. Do not worry mothers milk is never insufficient. Peoples wrong advice makes it insufficient and that too in mothers mind. If the child gains atleast 15gms/day than do not worry. Also if the child passes 6-7 times urine and goes back to sleep after feeding than he is fine and geting enough milk. Always feed and empty one breast fully before going to another breast as the breast foremilk is rich in water and the hind milk is rich in protein and fat. Happy Feeding.

First of all the cause of diarrhea should be found. Do not give anything to her except breast milk, not even water. As if anything other than mothers milk will go into the babies mouth she will have loose motion and diarrhea. Also if she passes stool with every episode of feeding than be rest assured its a normal reflex. She may pass stool upto 10 times per day. Kindly feed the baby with milk for every episode of loose stool. As soon as the infection passes outside the body the stool frequency will normalize. If she is not gaining any weight then you need to show to a pediatrician to rule out any GIT infections.
