High Functioning Autism - Understanding It

High Functioning Autism - Understanding It

We have heard the label" high functioning autism"- - it basically means that the disorders are present at a higher level. And the symptoms of that disorder and co-morbids are amplified compared to the same disorder / co-morbids at the lower end - since they are spectrum disorders.
A lot of us dont know much about it, what is it exactly or its symptoms and traits and crucially how to handle it or deal with it in daily life.

There is more to it than meets the eye.

It completely affects the individual life in the following: aspects:

  • Education
  • Behaviour
  • Employment
  • Emotions
  • Relationship
  • Mental health
  • Meltdowns

All we have seen and heard is the" behavioural" aspect of it especially challenging behaviour which is only one aspect of it. Without knowing or understanding some of the other aspects that coexist with it. Nor the

Co-morbidity of other disorders present at the same time.
N. B. Granted -some have a better understanding of it than others -

  • This article gives a simple overview for everyone involved. The individual him / her self, the parent, carer, guardian and educator. To start to understand exactly what" high functioning" is, all about -.
  • The additional article links within the article are also worth a read.
  • Hopefully this series of post will provide us with a better understanding of" high functioning autism. And its effect on the entire life of individuals living it.

Dear Lybrate user. Nutmeg is a popular spice that has a long list of associated health benefits, including its ability to relieve pain, soothe indigestion, strengthen cognitive function, detoxify the body, boost skin health, alleviate oral conditions, reduce insomnia, increase immune system function, and prevent leukemia, and improve blood circulation. You can take half a teaspoon per day. Take care.

I had sinus or migraine as one side face ache? Severe one sided face ache frequently what is it cure?

MBBS, MD - Anaesthesiology, FIPM, Fellowship in palliative medicine, certificate in interventional pain management, Multidisciplinary pain management course
Pain Management Specialist, Pune
One sided facial pain is not due to migraine. It can be due to: 1. Tooth infection: Consult a dentist first to rule out dental pathology as cause of facial pain. 2. Sinusitis: Associated nasal congestion, features of upper respiratory infections are present. ENT consultation is needed. 3. Trigeminal Neuralgia: Sharp, shooting electric shock like pain in bursts felt along particular part of face It is easily relieved with medication and if needed intervention like Gasserian ganglion block. Consult a pain specialist for this. 4. Idiopathic facial pain: This condition is simply facial pain without any reason. This can be managed by medication and if needed injection. Consult a pain specialist for this. For detailed evaluation and treatment accordingly consult with a pain specialist.

Can I drink cold water or soft drinks during my Bell's Palsy disease where still I got my left face paralised and also I could not close my left eye entirely. And also can I be in an ac room?

Physiotherapist, Delhi
Hi no you should not do any of these. Not drink cold water, or soft drink, nor sit in an ac room. This is because the nerve is already irritated. You need to start with physiotherapy treatment as early as possible as first 21 days following attack, are the most crucial for complete recovery of nerve.

My son is 10 years old on 05/03/2015. He was admit in hospital and the mri of brain shows mild subcortical white matter atrophy in bilateral occipital and parietal lobes seqelase to hypoxia insult at birth and the doctor give the medicine tegrtal 200 and take two time in the day. Please advise.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS

I think tab tegretal was started because your child had focal convulsions which has to be continued until the child is free from convulsions at least for a period of 2 years. It he has any other problem has to be taken care of.
