hi this is doctor Kalpesh from Pune this is a very good question you have ask about the temperature regulation system development in babies when babies inside the womb baby thermostatic settings are not that developed after delivery baby starts getting accommodated to the external environmental temperature and hypothalamic axis starts taking over the control of temperature regulation system TCP is not getting adopted to external environment you need to support baby buy wrapping With warm clothes keeping the temperature up to 30 degree Celsius you can also keep up baby along with your body touch so that baby can get heat from your body that is also called as Kangaroo Mother Care for the baby air conditioning is useful to prevent sweating during summer season and maintaining the hydration of your body but that is not at all feasible for babies you can get consulted for further details about baby babycare, regards

Causes and Treatment of Colic Pain

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jaipur
Causes and Treatment of Colic Pain

When you have a newborn bundle of joy, no parent would be ready for constant crying bouts from the infant. However, for various reasons, even healthy, well-fed infants can be colicky.

What is it: Although a mystery, a baby is said to be colicky if it cries for more than 3 hours a day for more than 3 days a week for more than 3 weeks at a stretch. The baby is completely healthy, and the symptoms start about 2 to 3 weeks of life in both breast-fed and bottle-fed babies. The baby usually has a red face from crying and could be pulling its legs towards its chest due to the abdominal discomfort.

Causes: Though still not exactly established, some things that are believed to cause colic include:

  1. The baby's digestive system that is growing and goes through spasms
  2. Extreme sensitivity to noise and light in the surrounding environment
  3. Accumulation of gas in the belly that is ingested with the milk (breast or bottles)
  4. Hormones that are supposedly affecting the baby's moods

Treatment: As there is no specific cause identified, the treatment is also symptomatic and aims at soothing the baby's pain and discomfort.

  1. Altered feeding: Given that a baby's tummy is very small and is about the size of a fist, it makes sense to feed it small amounts at regular intervals than to give a full feed once in like 4 to 5 hours. The baby is sure to feel full with this and therefore the discomfort. Burping between the feed is also shown to help avoid feeling of fullness. If you are breast-feeding, try to not let the baby doze off when feeding.
  2. Anti-colic bottles: These bottles have a vent inside the bottle which will help reduce the accumulation of gas within the bottle. There are various brands available in the market, these could be a good solution if the baby is even partially bottle-fed.
  3. Simethicone: This is an anti-flatulent, which again helps eliminate gas bubbles in the stomach and thereby provides relief to the infant. It can be given either by a dropper or a syringe.
  4. Exercise: Try bending the legs at the knee and holding it towards the baby's stomach, this can help ease the pain.

Remember that this is a very transient thing and usually disappears on its own by the 4th month, and the above measures are only to help the baby and the mother. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

My son has been complaining about his legs and his back hurting for a long what should he do?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS

Excessive playing and jumping may result in this. Back pain may be due to abnormal posture. First try by reducing any excessive activities or abnormal posture. Vitamin d deficiency may also be a causative factor for his pain.

Hi my son is 6 months old and he is suffering from teething problem what I should do to relax him as due to pain he is getting hyper and all the time putting fingers in his mouth n drinking 3 ounce or like 2 ounce per hour. immediately he vomits as he Take burp

DMB
Pediatrician, Chennai
Normally teeth start erupting at 6 months of age, but at this time most babies also start putting things in their mouth. This is the way the child explores his or her environment. Fussiness of the child can be caused by other things such as ear pain and blocked nose. Allow the child to put fingers in the mouth as he is using them as a pacifier which will be cleaner than an artificial pacifier that keeps falling to the ground. Your baby may be swallowing a lot of air due to faulty position of bottle feeding and could be a reason for regurgitation of milk. I suggest you change to cup feeds and introduce solids in his diet.

Babies have basic social skills from seven months

Researchers have revealed that seven-month-old babies have basic social skills and can understand what their parents and relatives are up to..this study says small babies not only observe their surroundings but can also understand social interactions

The results provide evidence that directly links neural responses from the motor system to overt social behaviour in infants

Treating Stomach Aches and Pains in Kids

DNB (Pediatrics), MBBS
Pediatrician, Ghaziabad
Treating Stomach Aches and Pains in Kids

Stomach aches and pains are common in babies, infants and parents are always in search of quick fixer to help their little ones get a relief instantly. Though instant reliefs do not come always, and there are colicky infants and babies with common stomach problems, yet some remedies and treatments always help.

Stomach pain in older kids:
The common home remedies in not so serious pains are as follows:

  • Let the child rest and lie down. This may help to ease the pain in 20-30 minutes.
  • Give the child some liquid to drink, which is soothing, like light tea, soup, water or diluted fruit juice.
  • Let the child go to the toilet and encourage him or her to pass stool. This may help ease off the pain sooner.
  • Avoid any bulk food intake in one meal and divide it into smaller meals through the day until symptoms go away.
  • Don't give oily and fried food. Give easy to digest food, mostly boiled or light fried.
  • Avoid giving a medicine without medical advice.

These steps generally help and the pain goes away without going to a doctor immediately. If the pain is severe and is persistent in any one part of the abdomen, then it may require immediate medical attention. Common causes may be appendicitis or gall stone problem or may be a case of acute jaundice, diarrhoea, food poison, etc. Pain on pressing one part of the belly, or high body temperature with pain, and serious vomiting are serious symptoms which you must not ignore and take the kid immediately to a medical centre or doctor.

Stomach pain in infants:
Stomach pains in infants are caused due to extra air entering the stomach while feeding. This can be avoided by burping the baby manually. There are a few burping techniques which your paediatrician and baby care giver will show you.

If you are with a colicky baby, then you would try administering the baby's nursing bottle first. There are new age nursing bottle designs, which keep off extra air from entering the stomach. The extra air mainly causes the stomach pain, and therefore, the bottle which prevents mixing of air with milk or water keeps the baby safe from colicky pains. Keep baby colic pain syrups at home ready, and give the baby a dose as and when required. It will eventually give the pain a relief.

Diet when breast feeding

1) focus on eating whole grains & cereals, legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables. 2) go for foods providing plenty of protein, calcium & iron.
3) traditionally, breast feeding moms are given a lots of dry fruits, ghee & sugar. These high calory foods were meant to supplement the khichdi diet that moms traditionally follow after birth.
4) try dry fruits without ghee & sugar by putting them in your dalia. This way you will not be loaded with high calories.

Migraine and Solutions

Ayurvedic Perspective of Migraine and its management

Migraine is one of the worst headaches a person can experience. It is described as a throbbing or pulsating pain that can be on one side of the head. It can begin in a specific area and then spread while it builds in intensity. A migraine is associated with nausea and vomiting. The person will also be sensitive to light, sounds and even certain smells. Sleeping can be difficult and many people become depressed. They can last for a couple of hours or for several days.

Therapies Generally Used.

External treatments along with the internal preparations are very effective in chronic conditions. Panchakarma helps to remove the accumulated toxins and help to strengthen the nerve system. Involvement of other systemic disorders is also taken into account before deciding the treatment protocols.

1. Thala pothichil : Various kinds of paste (grinded mixture of selected herbs in suitable liquid media ) over the forehead / entire head help for the sudden relief from the ache. The preparations help to normalize the hyper action of the nerve cells and regulates the blood circulation towards the brain

2. Thalam : Special herbal powders suitable to reduce the Dosha vitiation, are selected and mixed with suitable liquid media(oils/ghee) and this medicated herbal paste is applied lukewarm over the crown of head (Anatomically over the Bregma point on skull). (Dur 25-45min).

3. Shiro abhyanga : Head Massaging with Oils suitable for the Dosha vitiation, helps to increase the blood circulation towards brain and also helps to relax the spastic muscles on head. Special care is taken to massage the Marmas or the Vital points on head which have marvelous results.

4. Nasya : Nasya (application of herbal preparations through nostrils) is one of the treatments which directly acts on the nerves and removes the toxins accumulated in the sinuses. Mucus lining inside the nostrils are one of the areas where numerous nerve endings are exposed. The medicated oils applied through Nasya directly acts on these nerve endings and help to pacify Vata Dosha in disturbed nerves and control the abnormal impulses gernerated by these nerves. The special preparations used for Nasya drains the mucus deposited in the sinuses thereby the pressure in this area is relieved. The medicinal contents of the oils administered, stimulate the higher centers of brain which have actions on regulation of endocrine, nervous system and circulatory functions.

5. Shiro dhara : Shiro dhara with Takram (medicated butter milk) is also another important therapy which is used to control the vitiated vata kapha doshas localized head.(Dur 25-75min) Other Panchakarma treatments like Vasti (a course of medicated oil and decoction enemas), Virechana (purgation) also helps to put the toxins out from the body.

After the Panchakarma therapies, special preparations called Rasayana (immunoregulatory) is administered. Rasayana preparations improve the immune system further improving the perception of sense organs. Migraine due to other systemic involvement like psychological problems, digestive problems, blood pressure, ophthalmic problems, immune problem, improper menstruation, etc will be relieved when treated according to the specific treatment told for these diseases.

MD - Homeopathy
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Hi, Mr. Lybrate-user, firstly if your daughter is a thyroid patient you should regularly check her tsh levels so we can analyse whether her thyroid status is normal or no if she is on medication. Because you require to adjust the dose of her medicines as per her tsh levels. Regarding diet you should increase her protein diet. Introduce sprouts, paneer, milkshakes, dates, jaggery in her diet. Lastly you also need to give her diet which is rich in calcium like ragi, almonds, milk and milk products. There are also very good yogas for thyroid patients, teach her it will benefit her and you can also start her on homoeopathic medicines which will give wonderful results.
