Is There Any Relation Between Stress And Erectile Dysfunction?

BHMS
Sexologist, Lucknow
Is There Any Relation Between Stress And Erectile Dysfunction?

Yes. Stress definitely can cause erectile dysfunction (ed). It may become an issue with a new relationship or when challenges at work become overwhelming. These issues can interfere with “erotic focus” or “awareness of sensory experience.” basically, it can take someone out of “the moment” making maintaining an erection a challenge.

In fact, while stress is a common cause of erectile dysfunction in those under the age of 40, it can be responsible for ed at any age.

Also, while younger men are more likely to have a psychological reason for their ed, physical reasons cannot be excluded. Nevertheless, in younger men the causes are often related to stress, depression, extreme anxiety, or some other disruption in their emotional state. Young men may have physical reasons that cause ed, including issues like abnormal hormone production, trauma that affects the blood vessels of the penis, peyronie’s disease that causes a bend in the penis, neurological conditions that affect the transmission of signals that result in erections, drug or alcohol use, or the use of medications as simple as antihistamines.

Also, in men under the age of 40, ed can be an early sign that vascular disease is beginning to affect them. An erection is an indicator of a man’s general health. It is always worth exploring the possible physical issues that could be at work.

Nevertheless, in the younger population stress and depression are not uncommon causes of ed.

Psychological causes of ed

  • Depression: depression is recognized as having effects far beyond mood. It can compromise someone’s immune system or even increase the likelihood of having a heart attack. Erectile dysfunction can affect someone with depression even when he is in a stable and loving relationship. Unfortunately, the drugs used to treat depression can cause erectile dysfunction, as well. The good news is that erectile dysfunction medications work whether the difficulty is from the depression itself or from the medications.
  • Anxiety: people think of performance anxiety (worry about “performing” sexually) but anxiety over any issue that is distracting can lead to erectile dysfunction.
  • Stress: stress can be job-related, money-related, or the result of marital problems, among other factors.
  • Loss of desire: this is called loss of libido by doctors. It means that a person no longer desires sexual intimacy as they once had. Hormone changes as in low testosterone can cause erectile dysfunction, but so can so can neurological or psychological conditions, medications, or relationship issues. The reason should be investigated to resolve the issue. Erectile dysfunction (ed) drugs will not work for many of these patients. A person must feel a desire for sex to kick off the process that allows the medications to function properly.
  • Sense of inadequacy: feeling bad about oneself (low self esteem) can stem from a man being unable to fulfill the role he believes gives him value as a man. It can be a failure to provide as he hoped for his family, an inability to gain acceptance in a peer group, or being unable to engage in sexual intimacy with a spouse or partner.
  • Guilt: guilt over having an affair, losing the family’s money, having a hidden compulsion like gambling or drug use, or being unable to satisfy a partner, as examples, can all interfere with being able to get aroused or engage in sex.

Good evening Doc I will be very frank in putting up this problem and seriously don't what to do about it. I started dating a girl where in everything was fine until we decided to get physical. It was a month after we started seeing each other. When we started getting close I had a boner and as I was reaching to do the thing. My penis don't int erect. And you can imagine it was embarrassing. I tried it. But it dint happen. I was shit scared. On the very next day I went and met a doctor at my hometown and told him about the same. And got myself tested for everything testerone level. And lot more. Even the ultrasound. I was diagnosed with mild hydrocele in my right ball. Rest all reports came normal. I started taking medicine for the same and I guess it will take a month to recover from hydrocele. But even after that we met and thought of doing it. But I was scared and was worried of the repetition of the last incident. Now I am double scared. What next - basically mentally disturbed - as I never faced this problem in my last relationship. Bit history of my sexual life. I was dating a girl earlier and having physical intercourse was a normal thing. Infact I was good at it. I loved her deeply and we were together for four years - so the bonding was too much. Also I never faced any problem when it came to sex. I broke up with her in March last year and was in depression for quite some time. To add to my problems - in April last year (month after my break up) - I started having pain in my right ball without having any injury or anything (unprotected sex with third person or so). And later was diagnosed with epididymitis. After medication - the pain went off but my right ball was always swollen. But recently few days before I was about to get physical with my second girl friend - I had pain in my scrotum. I thought once I will go to my hometown I will show. But before I could go on leave (I stay in an another city - away from my hometown) and show to a doctor. I met my gf and had that embarrassing moment. Now I want to know y I dint get the erection- (A) was it because of the hydrocele and what are the future symptoms and when I will be fit to do the intercourse again. (B) I also feel that I was way to close to my ex gf and had sex only with her in my life - so moving on to second girl might be making mind fuzzy and disturbed. As I loved her a lot. (C) what else it could be - and what's the way ahead. (D) Also should I go for some power capsule or something just prior to sex with my new girl friend - as you can't imagine how sacred I am to have sex with her after the last incidence. Can you suggest some capsules for the same. Doc I will be very thankful to you - if you tell me something Positive on this. I am not getting time to visit a doctor - as my job profile is like that. So had to look for online consultation.

Erectile dysfunction could be because of stress, hydrocele or medications you are on. Kindly mention your ongoing treatment for hydrocele. Don't go for power capsules.

Earache? before starting any treatment you require to have micro exam of ear. Also if nothing abnormal it may be only neuralgia or referred pain of toothache or tonsillitis or any infective lesion in throat. Also sinus problem can give rise to ear ache.

I want to ask, my son always cough while drinking water, it means some amount of water enters wrong pipe, so is it good to distract during coughing when he is drinking water, or let him clear his airway through coughing? Hope all doctors understand Wht I want to ask!

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

Yes, don't distract him...coughing reflex helps to prevent water from entering into wind pipe. Also ask him to drink slowly and carefully.

I recently taken HIV test Result came Non reactive
what it mean I am hiv positive or negative?
HIV spread through Contact between broken skin, wounds, or mucous membranes and HIV-infected blood or blood-contaminated body fluids. Deep, open-mouth kissing if both partners have sores or bleeding gums and blood from the HIV-positive partner gets into the bloodstream of the HIV-negative partner. HIV is not spread through saliva. Non reactive test result means you do not have the HIV infection. Do not worry.
