I suffered from sleep paralysis this year in january to march. Then I got fine. But today suddenly again I was attacked from sleep paralysis this afternoon. What is the reason for sleep paralysis? How can it be harmful? How can I avoid it in future because it is very painful specially in the head during its occur. I am 18 years old.

Sleep paralysis most often occurs in people who have narcolepsy or sleep apnoea, but it can affect anyone. Episodes involve not being able to speak or move while falling asleep or upon waking. This usually lasts one or two minutes and is often frightening. The main treatment is improved sleep habits (sleep hygiene) including going to bed at the same time every night, ensuring a comfortable sleep environment free of distractions and avoiding caffeine before sleeping

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have mentioned low back pain with radiating pain in legs which is an indication that there is a nerve compression in spine. Also mention whether there are any other neurological symptoms in legs like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc also present? I will require: - a detailed neurological charting of lower limbs (motor, sensory and evaluation of deep reflexes) preferable done by an experienced doctor or a physical therapist - dynamic x ray of your involved region of spine done - mri ls spine meanwhile you should continue with: to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you, also medications for neuropathic symptoms like tab pregabalin or tab gabapentin can be added in small doses for relief of leg symptoms - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. The burning sensation can be due a variety of conditions. So its good to take her to a doctor for a thorough examination (checking for vital signs and systemic examination) and do some tests like CBC, ESR, blood sugar, urine routine etc which the doctor can decide. Please do not ignore any symptom. Revert after that to inform about the diagnosis and treatment.

I would recommend seeing a physiotherapist for assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause of your difficulty standing after sitting if you haven't already. One of the most common clinical causes of this complaint is a lumbar disc bulge although it could be due to other conditions such as coccydynia, spinal degeneration, facet joint sprain etc.

To remain healthy and Fit ,you should follow 3 steps in your life 1.BALANCED DIET 2.EARLY MORNING BRISK MORNING WALK for 30 minutes and 10 minutes evening walk after Dinner 3.DRINK 6-8 Glasse of water daily. As 60% of our body is made of water, it acts as a carrier of essential nutrients inside our body. Loosing as little as 5% of body's weight as water can cause headache, fatigue and lower your muscle strength. To stay healthy, an adult should drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday. Balanced Diet= 60% Carbohydrates + 20% Fats + 20% Proteins 1. Carbohydrates: Our main source of energy. Stored in liver and muscles. Carbohydrates are used the most by our body duringexercise. Hence, it is important for people who exercise regularly to consume a diet rich in carbohydrates. (a) Instant/rapid carbohydrates energy sources: Banana, Milk, Sweets, Sugarcane juice. (b) Slow carbohydrates energy sources: Beans, Bread, Cereals, Potato, Pulses, Rice. 2. Proteins: Essential for growth, repair of muscle, skin, hair and body tissues. It's common, nothing to worry, just dip a towel in hot water and apply on your calf muscles, you can use some volini spray also. Always cool down and do stretches at last to relax your muscles and bring back the blood flow to normal.

I had a knee dislocation while playing shuttle badminton on 28 feb 15. My mri reports, acute acl tear, type ii sprain of mcl and lcl, kissing bone marrowconfusion knee bones and mild to moderate joint effusion. Grade ii meniscial lesion ofposterior horns of both meniscui. Allopathy doctors advised for surgery. Can you advise me?

Since there is marrow contusion on the mri, it means that the bones are also affected. Best would no to rest your knees and do extensive physios. Use a brace to support the knee in the meanwhile. After 6 weeks of you still have pain or instability in the knees, consider arthroscopic surgery for both menisci and acl reconstruction.

Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck back knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. For emergency treatment contact your nearest hospital or family doctor. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, contact me again.

Why do I get Knots in Muscles in Neck and Back?

What are muscle knots?
Muscle knots are points within a muscle where contracted fibers are unable to release 1, or, as the dictionary puts it: highly irritable localized spots of exquisite tenderness in a nodule in palpable taunt bands of muscle tissue.

A common problem for active people, muscle knots technically called myofascial trigger points, or mtps feel like a small knot to your fingertips. These knots can range from the size of a pinhead in smaller muscles to the size of your thumb in larger muscles. 2

Muscle knots can cause pain in two ways: (1) latent trigger points, which are knots that only hurt when you put pressure on them, and (2) active trigger points, which are knots that actively refer pain along your neural pathways, causing it in non-localized areas.

Trigger points in a constant state of contraction have excess metabolic waste and oxygen use because blood flow to this area stops this sends pain signals to the brain. Because your brain wants to stop the pain, it commands the muscle to rest, which leads to under-usage of the muscle. This is what makes the muscle shorten and tighten up.

What causes muscle knots?
The most common causes of muscle knots are:

1) accidents acute trauma, such as bad falls sports injuries that strain you joints and muscles
2) postural stress sitting too long with poor posture, sitting with no support, lifting improperly
3) overstimulation
