Tips to Prevent Herniated Discs

Tips to Prevent Herniated Discs

Our spinal disk resembles a jelly donut, wherein the softer insides are protected by the hard exterior. Sometimes, as a result of some injury or an accident the jelly slips out, leading to an extremely painful condition which in medical parlance is known as herniated disc. The pain that you are subjected to, during herniated disc, occurs as the nerves nearby are damaged due to the concussion.

Apart from pain, herniated disc is preceded by other symptoms, some of them are:

  1. Pain in the arm or the leg: Depending on which part of the body you have suffered the herniated disc, in the neck or in your lower back, this condition is succeeded by intense pain either near the buttocks or near the shoulders. It goes without saying that this pain increases sharply with movement.
  2. Numbness: That part of the body where the nerves are damaged due to herniated disc often becomes numb and has no sensation whatsoever.
  3. Weakness: Due to herniated disc, the muscles become weak that considerably impairs and curbs mobility.

However, there are various ways by which you can prevent a herniated disc. Some of them are:

  1. Exercise: Exercise in any form and even for a short while yields several benefits. Your body invariably gains momentum and agility. If you exercise daily, your spine becomes more stable and strong, thereby preventing a possible herniated disc.
  2. Maintaining the right and good posture: A lot depends on the way you sit and walk, in fact more than you can imagine. If you sit badly, it exerts a pressure on the spine and the discs. Subsequently, a good posture does the very reverse and curbs chances of a herniated disc in the future.
  3. Keep a tab on the weight: It is always healthy to maintain the right weight, the one that keeps you away from the onset of various diseases. If you are overweight, it puts more pressure on the spine disk, thereby increasing the risk of developing a herniated disc.

Here are some tips for how to handle your back pain: -stop normal physical activity for the first few days. This will help relieve your symptoms and reduce any swelling in the area of the pain. -Apply heat or ice to the painful area. One good method is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, and then use heat. Take pain relievers medicine. --While sleeping, try lying in a curled-up, fetal position with a pillow between your legs. If you usually sleep on your back, place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees to relieve pressure. -Find a mattress with back support. A good mattress should provide support for the natural curves and alignment of the spine. Medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than firm mattresses. -Do not perform activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting of your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain begins. -Avoid bending forward and sitting in a place for long time -Good posture plays a key role in your spine health, helping to prevent additional back and neck pain and even injuries to spinal structures. Try to be aware of your posture and make good posture part of your normal routine. -head up, shoulders back, rear tucked under -Stand and walk with correct posture -Sit with support -Lift and carry carefully -And finally, keep moving:-Maintaining a static position for too long—more than twenty or thirty minutes at a time—is hard on the back. Prolonged static posture can slowly deplete elasticity from the tissues. By simply moving—be it a change of position, a stretch, or a short walk—the tissue elasticity needed to protect your joints can be restored and the associated discomfort reduced. -Stretching and strengthening exercises are important. But, starting these exercises too soon after an injury can make your pain worse. -Some Physiotherapy treatment like IFT current can give you relief. -Consult a Physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your back pain. Best wishes.

After any surgical procedure, feeling of lethargy can be there. A doctor may prescribe you with multivitamin and can introduce some small specific exercises to build up your stamina slowly. Eat protein rich foods and don't forget the fruits!

Sir my age is 19 but I am suffering from knee pain regularly. My shirts becomes heavy due to sweats. What should I do.
Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

My age is 68 years. I want to know the reasons for swelling in the feet. My wight is also 80 plus.

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There are many causes of swelling in the legs and foot region. Most common reason is postural and many patients develop it when they stand for a long time, but as soon as they elevate their leg up, the swelling subsides. It can happen after any injury which is a priority to diagnose and treat accordingly. Also there could be infection or inflammation which can lead to swelling. Sometimes heavy physical activity may also lead to swelling in your calf muscles. But we have to look at medical causes as well, chronic cardiac conditions can lead to swelling, any pathology which leads to low proteins in the body like deranged lft, kft etc can also lead to swelling. Hypothyroidism can also lead to generalized swelling like appearance in the body. So for accurate diagnosis we need to clinically evaluate and get appropriate tests: cbc, esr, crp, lft, kft, serum electrolytes and thyroid profile. Please get back to me should you need more information or with test results. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

My mom has burning sensation on both her feet. What do you suggest What is the remedy?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. As is true of any pathology, remedy lies in actually knowing what is causing it? also there are many causes of numbness in feet, from issues related to lower back and nerve compression to systemic diseases like diabetes, numbness can be present. If you can write in detail about your mother's symptoms, duration, associated symptoms, what medicines does she take now and in past? what investigations have been done for this problem and what is the treatment she has received thus far, then I can evaluate and we can try and reach to a diagnosis. Accordingly treatment can be started. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.
