I am a smoker. I'm smoking since 2 years. I can't stop smoking. What are the steps to be taken to stop smoking. And how long I will live healthy if I continue smoking.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You can stop smoking if you keep on trying. No one can predict the exact time of your death if you continue smoking. Each cigarette can cut short your life by 5 minutes, if that is of any help. You can judge for yourself with the following data: Summary: (Source: Center for Disease Control and Prevention) • Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is nearly one in five deaths. • More than 10 times as many U.S. citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States during its history. • Smoking causes about 90% (or 9 out of 10) of all lung cancer deaths in men and women.1,2 More women die from lung cancer each year than from breast cancer. • About 80% (or 8 out of 10) of all deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are caused by smoking. • Cigarette smoking increases risk for death from all causes in men and women. • Smoking is estimated to increase the risk— o For coronary heart disease by 2 to 4 times o For stroke by 2 to 4 times o Of men developing lung cancer by 25 times • Of women developing lung cancer by 25.7 times • Smoking causes diminished overall health, increased absenteeism from work, and increased health care utilization and cost. • Smoking causes stroke and coronary heart disease. • Even people who smoke fewer than five cigarettes a day can have early signs of cardiovascular disease. • Smoking damages blood vessels and can make them thicken and grow narrower. This makes your heart beat faster and your blood pressure go up. Clots can also form. • Blockages caused by smoking can also reduce blood flow to your legs and skin. • Lung diseases caused by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. • Cigarette smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. • If you have asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack or make an attack worse. • Smokers are 12 to 13 times more likely to die from COPD than nonsmokers. Smoking can cause cancer almost anywhere in your body: • Bladder • Blood (acute myeloid leukemia) • Cervix • Colon and rectum (colorectal) • Esophagus • Kidney and ureter • Larynx • Liver • Oropharynx (includes parts of the throat, tongue, soft palate, and the tonsils) • Pancreas • Stomach • Trachea, bronchus, and lung • Smoking can make it harder for a woman to become pregnant and can affect her baby's health before and after birth. Smoking increases risks for: o Preterm (early) delivery o Stillbirth (death of the baby before birth) o Low birth weight o Sudden infant death syndrome (known as SIDS or crib death) o Ectopic pregnancy o Orofacial clefts in infants • Smoking can also affect men's sperm, which can reduce fertility and also increase risks for birth defects and miscarriage. • Smoking can affect bone health. o Women past childbearing years who smoke have weaker bones than women who never smoked, and are at greater risk for broken bones. • Smoking affects the health of your teeth and gums and can cause tooth loss. • Smoking can increase your risk for cataracts (clouding of the eye’s lens that makes it hard for you to see) and age-related macular degeneration (damage to a small spot near the center of the retina, the part of the eye needed for central vision). • Smoking is a cause of type 2 diabetes mellitus and can make it harder to control. The risk of developing diabetes is 30–40% higher for active smokers than nonsmokers. • Smoking causes general adverse effects on the body, including inflammation and decreased immune function. • Smoking is a cause of rheumatoid arthritis. If you quit now, these are the benefits: Quitting and Reduced Risks • Quitting smoking cuts cardiovascular risks. Just 1 year after quitting smoking, your risk for a heart attack drops sharply.2 • Within 2 to 5 years after quitting smoking, your risk for stroke could fall to about the same as a nonsmoker’s.2 • If you quit smoking, your risks for cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and bladder drop by half within 5 years.2 • Ten years after you quit smoking, your risk for lung cancer drops by half.2

What is making you keep to yourself? Indeed losing someone close is a very unfortunate event. Death is ultimately going to come but nothing can prepare you for someone's death. It is neccessary that you allow yourself to grieve the loss. However after losing one person we shut other people out with fear of losing them. You may have so many people who are dear to you and yet live away somewhere, or you may not be spending enough time with while they are around. You assume that they are fine and alive because you think about them through your memories. Same way, the close person you lost can still be kept alive through your memories, by talking about him/her. More than that you need to interact with other people close to you so that you will not feel regretful like right now that you could soend more time with them after they are gone. Also your close ones maybe very sad to see you not spending time with them. Even they may have fear of losing you. While we are alive, we can make sure we are there for each other. Since you messaged for help, it is an indication that you are done with grieving and ready to get out of it. Another thing that happens is when they lose a close person they feel if they move on it will be wrong, that they did not love the person enough. This guilt is not needed because once a person passes away that person moves on from this life, so their loved ones have to move on as well, and remember them in their heart.

Dear , quitting smoking is very easy if you have will power. Just stop it and be stubborn never to touch it. Nicotine chewing gum is available in medical stores. You can use them as an alternative to reduce craving. Slowly you can reduce them too. Take care.

Types of Depression

Sexologist Clinic
Sexologist, Faridabad
Types of Depression

Depression ranges in how serious it is. Some people experience mild and temporary episodes of sadness. Others experience severe and ongoing depressive episodes. Your doctor can help you come up with a treatment plan based on what type of depression you have. There are two main types: major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder

Major depressive disorder is the most severe form of depression. It is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness that do not go away on their own. You must experience five or more of the following symptoms over a two-week period to be diagnosed with clinical depression:

  • feeling depressed most of the day
  • loss of interest in most regular activities
  • significant weight loss or gain
  • sleeping too much or not being able to sleep
  • slowed thinking or movement
  • fatigue or low energy most days
  • feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • loss of concentration or indecisiveness

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.
