Internet Addiction - A Thriving Issue!

Is there anybody you know who uses internet excessively in a day, like for playing video games, visiting porn sites, for online shopping, using Facebook or visiting different chatting sites again and again? Is his or her excessive internet usage interfering with daily life, interpersonal relationships, work, school, etc.? If the answer is yes, then maybe he or she is suffering from internet addiction.

Internet addiction is a growing social issue which is being debated worldwide. Internet has become an inseparable part of our daily living. Problematic use of internet can lead us to various mental and physical problems. Surveys in the United States and Europe have indicated alarming prevalence rates between 1.5 and8.2percentages respectively. There are some criteria to classify and diagnose internet addiction disorder.

The following 5 criteria are required to diagnose internet addiction:

  • The individual remain preoccupied with the internet (thinks about previous online activity or anticipate next online session)

  • Needs to use internet with increased amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction.

  • Has made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop internet use.

  • Is restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop internet use.

  • Has stayed online longer than originally intended.

Additionally, at least one of the following must be present:

  • Risked the loss of a significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the internet.

  • Lying to conceal the extent of involvement with the internet.

  • Use internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (like; feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)

There are different models available to explain the causal factor of internet addiction disorder. A comprehensive model of the development and maintenance of internet addiction by Winkler & Dorsing which takes into account socio-cultural factors, biological vulnerabilities like genetic factors, abnormalities in neurochemical processes, psychological predispositions and specific attributes of the internet to explain excessive engagement in internet activities.

Apart from the above discussed points, there are two significant psychological issues commonly seen in this group; one is a strong tendency to escape from the reality is there among internet addicts. These individuals find difficulty in facing the real world may be due to certain conflict issues which evoke stress and anxiety in them. Involvement with technology and internet becomes a way out to get rid of the discomfort. Another psychological issue is the tendency to control the environment. Humans have a tendency to get a control over everything and it is a fact that we can't control other persons and situations. Internet addicts are involved in this compulsive behaviour may be because it is easy to get a control of technology and internet than the real world which is more threatening for them.

Impact of problematic usage of internet on social relationships has become alarming nowadays. The habit of surfing the internet continuously can be destructive indirectly. Even it has been seen that people drift away to the point that he/she cannot interact with people. Constant preoccupation with internet is damaging one’s social skills. People are losing touch with their life and their self-identity. Nowadays people don’t take effort to establish face to face conversations, as many easy ways are available over internet, like chat messengers, email, etc. The constant effects of addiction to internet can lead an individual to such situations that involve various mental and behavioural problems like. Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. The absence of social interaction also can lead to various physical effects on individual’s brain chemistry and the general physical health.

There has been lots of debate on which treatment modality is effective for the treatment of Internet Addiction Disorder. In many cases, multimodal treatments have been employed. It has been seen that there are lots of underlying psychological problems found in internet addicts, like anxiety, depression, etc. In such cases medications are also considered to be effective.

Apart from pharmacological interventions, different psychotherapeutic models are found to be very helpful in treating internet addiction like cognitive therapy, behaviour therapy, art therapy, family therapy, skill building training, etc. Studies have found cognitive behavioural therapy, in particular, is very effective and can bring better outcome among this group.

Hi, I have led a very busy and stressful life as I was Chairman of Electricity Utilities. have been falsely implicated in 2 vigilance cases. I have nothing to worry but court cases take lot of time ,energy and money. I worry a lot.

If worry can solve your court cases, go ahead and worry! But you and I know that that is not the case. Just be patient and the law will take its course. If you have the confidence that the case will be favourable to you, relax in that knowledge. Factual knowledge is your solace. If we look too much into the future, it will make you scared. Focus in the moment. Do some mindfulness exercises. They are very useful to stay focussed. When you worry about the future, it spoils your today and may hasten ill-health too. If you keep your physical constitution fit with exercises and proper rest (sleep), and keep your emotional constitution nicely revved up by expressing your feelings, and if you keep your mental/psychological constitution balanced, nothing can perturb you. In your twilight years rest and peace should accompany you always. Life is already difficult: don't add to it.

A person can ease the symptoms of cervical spondylosis with a few simple neck exercises. 1. Neck stretch Keep your body straight. Push your chin forward in a way that stretches the throat. Softly tense the neck muscles. Hold this for 5 seconds. Return your head to its center position. Push your head back with the chin held high, and hold for 5 seconds. Carry out 5 repetitions. 2. Neck tilt Tilt your head forward so that the chin touches the chest. Softly tense the neck muscles. Hold this for 5 seconds. Return the head to a neutral position. Carry out 5 repetitions. 3. Neck tilt (side-to-side) Lean your head down towards either shoulder, leading with the ear. Softly tense the neck muscles. Hold this for 5 seconds. Return your head to the center and repeat on the other shoulder. Carry out 5 repetitions. 4. Neck turn Turn your head to one side as far as it remains comfortable, being sure to keep your chin at a level height. Tense your neck muscles for 5 seconds. Return the head to a central position. Repeat on the opposite side. Repeat this exercise 5 times on each side. These exercises can help to moderate the impact of the condition and alleviate pain or feelings of stiffness.

Dear lybrate-user, Health anxiety disorder can be treated with escitalopram, sertraline and clonotril. These tablets take 2-3 weeks to reach the brain. So you have to wait for few weeks to see the results. If the results are not that good, the doctor will increase the dose, add another tablet/therapy or shift to another antidepressant. You need to consult the doctor frequently for better improvement. Please continue exercise and meditation also in addition.

Hello Lybrate user As you have mentioned above regarding anxiety disorder, anxiety disorder could be due to low stress tolerance, high emotional sensitivity and high negative thoughts. These make an individual vulnerable to stressful situations. Try deep breathing exercises, maintain a thought diary and try to indulge in more positive thinking. Share your thoughts and feelings with someone close so as to have emotional support and guidance during such situations. For better management of the symptoms consult with a clinical psychologist in person for regular counselling sessions.

I had got engaged to my fiancée 6 months back through family arrangement like most people in India. I never had any kind of prior relationships. At that time, I was told by her family member that she had a previous family arranged engagement for 3 days and she left the boy as the boy was flirting with other girls. The girl also said that she never trusted him, never liked him nor was emotionally attached to him. So thinking the girl never had emotional relation/physical relationship to her ex [ for me physical relationship was only possible after emotional relationship], I said yes for this relationship. A month after I realized that there was something fishy as girl during our conversations brought this topic that she was devasted even after her breakup, I could not figure out why she was speaking like that since she had said she wasn't emotionally attached nor did like that boy. After someday, I felt love with her because of our regular conversations. After asking her why did she feel bad because of her 3 day breakup, she said it was a 4 month relationship. Still, I thought it was ok as people take time to break relationships even when they are not emotionally attached. But one day, I was just joking to her that I will not let her kiss me as I didn't knew how she kissed, and asked her whether she kissed before. To which she said yes and she said she made out with her ex multiple times since her ex insisted her. She said she didn't have sex, but for me this was devastating as her physical relation with her ex made me feel extremely hurt and shattered and felt cheated. [She had said to me previously that she would think 100 times even before kissing anyone even if the person was her fiancée. She said she will not even change clothes in front of other girls as she felt shy then why did she allow him to remove her clothes? She said that she felt her soul and body were different when she was in physical relationship with him. I asked her where did this happen and she said it happened at her home, his car and his home] I got nightmares of them and it was painful. I tried to cope up a lot and could not and eventually I had to breakup and even after 2 months subconsciously I say in my mind that I love her few times a day and also abuse her in my mind why she did she have physical relationship with him. I want to come out of this but this almost happens everyday This has effected me tremendously, I even hate movies or ads which show any kind of physical intimacy.

Sleep Irregularity - Can It Cause Depression?

Depression is a clinical, mental and emotional condition that may give rise to feelings of hopelessness and chronic sadness. It slows down the way people process everyday activities and leads the patient to a sense of constant gloom and doom. It is a disabling mental condition as per who and may be caused due to reasons like genetics, changes in the balance of hormones, stress, grief, trauma and prolonged, chronic physical ailments.

Symptoms of depression are:

  1. Sleep irregularity: It relates to either insomnia or oversleeping that is, either you sleep too much or do not sleep at all. This could be because of work or other stress in your personal or professional life.
  2. Irritation or unnecessarily getting angry: You start losing your temper easily and that too for silly reasons. You think you are losing control.
  3. Feeling hopeless and sad: The first signal or symptom is the feeling of hopelessness. In this, case the patient loses the hope in everything. They feel like being trapped in some kind of cage, from which they are not able to come out.
  4. Lack of interest in anything: Everything seems to be of no use or interest, even your daily work. You don't want to do anything; even the things, which you loved to do like your hobbies and passions, which you no longer find interesting.

Here is a comprehensive list of homeopathic medicines which most doctors are likely to recommend for treating depression:

  1. Sepia: This medicine is beneficial to women suffering from post-partum depression (sadness or emotional conflict after giving birth) and menopause. Feeling of solitude and hopelessness with no energy to continue with life are some common symptoms that can be reduced with Sepia.
  2. Arsenicum album: This medicine is prescribed to control the symptoms like diarrhea, gastric problems, indigestion which patients often suffer from as a result of intense anxiety. Patients, appropriate for this medicine tend to be fastidious and restless. It is made of white arsenic and should be taken in prescribed potency because an overdose can cause gastroenteritis.

The above mentioned medicines are just some of the medicines, which should only be taken only after consulting your doctor, as causes and symptoms differ for each person.
