Polio or poliomyelitis is a highly contagious viral disease. Mostly young children and preadolescents are affected by polio and the disease enters the system via the fecal-oral route or through ingestion of infected water or food. The virus multiplies in the intestine and invades the nervous system, causing paralysis. Polio can be classified into three categories-subclinical polio, non paralytic polio and paralytic polio. The signs and symptoms include headache, fever, sore throat, flu-like symptoms and vomiting. Paralytic polio can often lead to full paralysis.
HOW IS POLIO DIAGNOSED?
Post polio syndrome is a complication that can affect a person who has recovered from polio.
