Hereditary Spherocytosis is a hemolytic disorder that distorts the shape of the red blood cells, making their shape spherical instead of flat, inhibiting their ability to pass through the spleen. Normally, the spleen produces and cleans the blood cells while removing dead tissue and this function is hindered when one suffers from this disease. Its symptoms include fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, irritability and increased heart rate.
HOW IS HEREDITARY SPHEROCYTOSIS DIAGNOSED?
The irregular shape of the RBC caused by this disease causes them to break down and die prematurely. This is known as hemolytic anemia.
