Canavan disease is a hereditary disorder that falls under the category of rare diseases called Leukodystrophies. This disease which can be passed down from generation to generation causes gradual damage to the cells of the brain. The damage is such that the nerve cells are unable to send or receive signals to and from the other parts of the body. Mutations of the ASPA gene is responsible for this disease.

There is no cure or a definite course of treatment for the disease.
