Last Updated: Jan 20, 2025

Benefits of yoga for lungs

Yoga plays a vital role in keeping a person healthy. In today's scenario, the health of the lungs in people has deteriorated drastically. This has led to an increase in lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders. The deterioration of the lungs health can be attributed to some of the habits of the people like smoking. The quality of air that we breathe is another factor which further degrades the health of the lungs.

It has been well established that doing yoga is vital to keep one's health in a good state. There are several asanas and breathing exercises that helps in keeping the health of the lungs intact. These postures also help in providing relief to patients suffering from various lung disorders. Yoga improves both the elasticity and capacity of the lungs. There have been studies which indicate that one should do yoga for a period of 90 minutes regularly.

Sit in an upright position and start the breathing exercise by placing your thumb on one side of the nostril and inhaling from the other side. Release the thumb and hold the other nostril while exhaling from the nostril that was close previously. The purpose is to breathe in one nostril and breathe out from the other. Do this for 5 minutes.

Conclusion

Doing yoga improves the condition of the lungs but to sustain the healthy condition of the lungs there are some additional steps which must be taken by a person. Healthy diet improves the lung conditions of the person . Consuming cured meats like bacon, ham and hotdogs increase the risk of lung diseases in patients thus such foods must be avoided.

Other foods products which must be avoided are deep fried foods, carbonated drinks, and acidic food products. Instead of these, a person should add food products like fatty fish which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that improve lung health. Fruits must be included in the diet like apple and berries. Vitamin A is considered very essential for good lung health thus including dry fruits rich in vitamin A like apricots in the diet is considered appropriate.

Besides these changes in the diet, if a person has a habit of smoking then he/she must try to avoid smoking as it has a hazardous effect on the lungs. If a person is under medical consultation of chest specialist for lungs disorders then the medicines advised must be taken regularly along with yoga and a balanced diet to observe the prolonged positive effect.
