It would have been helpful if you would have mentioned your Fasting blood sugar, 2 hrs post prandial sugar and HbA1c level. 1. If your HbA1c level is less than 7.5%, it would imply a fair control on blood sugar. Please stick to diabetic diet, do regular exercise walking, yoga and if blood sugar is not controlled discuss with you doctor who may change your medicine. If not satisfied you can take a seecond openion also.

You can prevent diabetes by proper balanced diet, avoid oily fatty and fried items, with more of greens and vegetables / avoid sugary items. Maintain proper weight according to your height by regular physical activity with meditation /yoga (by being stress free). Recommended proper sleep in proper timing atheist 7 to 8 hrs at night. If you follow this, you can avoid diabetes. All the best.
