If locally advanced then a pet scan or a ct scan with bone scan may be advised to rule out spread of cancer. If early stage breast cancer, the patient undergoes surgery for the breast (mastectomy or lumpectomy with or without reconstruction by implant, onco...more

breast cancer if diagnosed early is generally given radio/ chemotherapy to shrink the tumour followed by surgery to remove the breast and axillary lymph nodes. It has good survival chances if treated early. Regular self breast examination to look for a lump, pain, nipple discharge/ abnormality, skin puckering helps in quick diagnosis which should be followed by timely sonography or mammogram to detect the cancer in time.

Breast cancer usually presents in middle aged to elderly women, with a painless breast lump, or bloody nipple discharge, or a non healing recent onset ulcer on the skin. It may arise as a result of hereditary factors, but women who have not given birth or who have not breast fed, or women having early menarche and late menopause are also more predisposed to having breast cancer in their lifetime.
