The joints and bones of the body are connected by fibrous band of tissue called as a ligament. When these ligaments are over stretched or are subjected to any injury that could cause tearing of the ligament and a sprain of the ligament happens. Sprains usually occur at the ankle joint, knee joint or the shoulder, since these areas have a connection of bones at a joint.

During movement, the ligament functions to stretch or expand and move back to its original position. However, sometimes due to an over-stretch of the ligament, it gets pushed or expands beyond its usual position. A sudden twisting movement of the ligament can also cause a sprain.

While walking, any abnormal movement of the leg can cause a sprain, hence, the ankle joint is the most common location affected by a sprain. Sports injuries are a common causative factor of sprains. In accordance to the body part involved frequently in playing sports, a wrist sprain or an ankle sprain is a common finding.

Dancers are also prone to frequently sprain their ligaments. If a sprain occurs at the wrist joint, it can also lead to cause the Carpal tunnel syndrome, which leads to the numbness of the wrist joint. Moderate to severe pain around the affected joint, presence of bruising in cases of an injury, swelling around the affected joint and difficulty in movement are the common symptoms of a sprain.

There can be a popping sound heard during an injury to the joint, which indicates a sprain. Sprain of the joint can cause other complications too. If there is an involvement of the nerve in the injury, there can be an associated numbness and tingling sensation at the affected area. A physician performs physical inspection of the area while looking for the symptoms of sprain. If the injury involves a larger surface area and is causing severe pain, an MRI or X-ray can be ordered to detect for the ligament or bone involvement, respectively.

Classification of sprain can be enlisted as follows:

  • Grade 1 sprain (mild): Slight stretching and little damage to the fibers of the ligament.
  • Grade 2 sprain (moderate): Includes partial tearing of the ligament. 
  • Grade 3 sprain (severe): Includes complete tearing of the ligament.  Prevention of a sprain can be achieved with certain measures. Specific exercises that can be targeted for sprain prevention can be learnt from the physical therapist.

Stretching exercises and muscle training are important in prevention of a sprain. Sprain preventing measures are as follows:

1. Before beginning an exercise routine, it is essential to do warm up exercises. Slight jogging can be done to activate muscle movement.

2. Stretching before and after an exercise routine is necessary. It ensures that the muscles around the joint are in a relaxed position. It helps in minimizing the risk of an injury.

3. Some specific exercises that help to strengthen the muscles around ankles should be done. Heel raise exercise is beneficial in strengthening the ankle muscles.

4. Exercises that target the improvement of overall body’s balance should be done on a regular basis. These exercises help in preventing twisting of ankles during walking or moving down the stairs.

5. In case of a previous ankle injury, it is recommended to wear an ankle brace to prevent any twisting caused by a dis-balance.

Treatment of the sprain is done by following the RICE procedure. This procedure includes the protocol of rest, ice, compression and elevation. Analgesics can be taken for pain relief. Ice pack application helps in reducing the swelling. Using a compression bandage helps in immobilizing the injury.

The wrist plays a crucial role in some of the most basic movements ranging from typing to writing to eating. When you have a wrist pain, it may interfere with your day-to-day activities and cast a negative impact on the quality of your life. The wrist is not just any joint; it rather comprises of several small joints that act as a connecting point between the bones of forearm and hand. You may suffer from wrist pain due to sudden trauma or injury, and before choosing any treatment option, it is important to determine the causes of wrist pain.

What are the symptoms of wrist pain?
The symptoms of wrist pain may vary depending on what’s causing it. Some people may suffer from a pain that they describe to be achy or dull while others may have a sharp pain that radiates locally. Treatments of wrist pain can vary to a great extent, and it is administered on the basis of type, location, and severity of the injury while age and overall health also play a role.

  1. Medicines: Pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and others may be helpful in reducing wrist pain. You may also take stronger pain relievers if your doctor prescribes it.
  2. Therapy: Specific therapeutic treatments and workouts may be useful in alleviating wrist injuries and tendon problems. If your problem needs surgical interventions, your physical therapist can help with rehabilitation post-surgery. In case the bones have been broken, the pieces need to be aligned for facilitating proper healing.
  3. Surgical interventions: In some severe cases of wrist pain, surgery may be recommended. For instance, if you have severely broken bones or carpal tunnel syndrome or if your ligament or tendon requires repair, surgery may be the last resort.

Wrist pain is common and often occur due to sudden injuries. However, they also occur due to certain long-term ailments as well.

We all experience minor medical issues like pain in the fingers, arms or wrists from time to time. Over exerting any part of the body and stress that area and lead to inflammation or tenderness. One of these most commonly used parts of the body are wrists. Any disease or injury involving the bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments may also lead to wrist pain.

The wrist is a complicated joint composed of eight small bony structures which are arranged in rows lying between the bones of the forearm and hand. Tough bands of ligament connecting the wrist bones to each other and the bones of hand and forearm may become damaged and cause wrist pain. Here are some of the most prevalent causes of wrist pain.

Injuries-
Sudden impact injuries often take place when a person falls forward on the outstretched hand. This may lead to strains, sprains, and even fractures. A scaphoid fracture involving a bone on the thumb side of the wrist may not be visible on X-rays right after the injury but cause immense pain.

Any activity involving repetitive motion of the wrist can inflame the tissues present in the joints and lead to stress fractures. This applies in particular when you perform any movement for long hours without any break. This disease is known as De Quervain’s disease and is a form of repetitive stress injury which leads to pain at the base of the thumb.

Diseases Affecting The Wrist-
Many diseases and complications may cause a problem in the wrist, and some of them include the following:

  1. Arthritis: An osteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis which takes place when the cartilage cushioning the ends of the bones damage over time. This type of arthritis occurs only in individuals who have injuries in the wrist. Another form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis where the immune system of the body attacks its tissues. If one wrist is affected, the other one gets affected as well.
  2. Kienbock’s disease: This type of disorder generally affects young adults and involves the collapse of one or more small bones in the wrist. It takes place when the blood supply to the bone is hampered.
  3. Ganglion cysts: It is a type of soft tissue cysts which typically affects the part of the cyst opposite to the palm. Smaller ganglion cysts tend to cause more pain than larger ones.
  4. Carpal tunnel syndrome: It develops when there is too much pressure on the median nerve since it passes through the carpal tunnel which is a passageway on the palm side of the wrist.

Wrist pain may affect an individual of any age regardless of whether he leads an active or sedentary lifestyle. But some people are more at risk than others. Wrist injuries are a common occurrence in sports like bowling, golf, gymnastics, and tennis. Repetitive work that involves the working of hand and wrist may also lead to wrist pain. Other conditions such as obesity, pregnancy, and diabetes may lead to wrist pain as well.

Heat treatment or thermotherapy is an effective process of healing from a sports injury. Understanding the when and how to use heat treatment is essential since it can even prolong the process of healing.

The Process Of Healing-

There are three stages of healing. The first phase is called the inflammatory phase. The goal for this phase is to ensure that no further damage happens to the affected area. It is during this phase that the swelling and the buildup of fluid happens. Heat treatment is not applicable here since it increases the blood circulation and can lengthen the healing process. The second phase is called proliferation. This is the phase where the introduction of scarring and new tissue takes place.   1. Heat treatment significantly increases the blood circulation and help to eradicate dead skin and other toxic bodies from the origin of the injury.

  3. It increases the capillary permeability.

Then there is superficial heat therapy. This is convenient and readily available. They directly transfer heat from the source to the injury location. They produce a steady source of heat and are run by either microwave or electricity.
