Vitiligo - Can Homeopathy Avert It?

People suffering from Vitiligo have patches of discolored skin on face, limbs, and body. Though the condition is neither life-threatening nor contagious, the unsightly patches may beget emotional stress.

Vitiligo may also affect hair, inside of mouth and eyes. It may turn a portion of hair white, discolor a part of the mouth and change the natural colour of eyes.

There is traditional treatment for this disease, but the outcome is often unpredictable. Such treatment may also cause serious side effects. Homeopathy may treat this condition successfully. In fact, a study has shown that homeopathy may be quite effective in the early stages of Vitiligo.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition characterized by destruction of epidermal melanin cells, leading to loss of skin pigment. It affects about 2% of the population. Both men and women are likely to suffer from this condition. It mostly develops between the ages of 10 and 30. However, in some people, it may also show up around the age of 40.

Causes

The apparent reason for the disease is the destruction of melanocytes; cells that impart colour to the skin. An autoimmune condition is considered to be responsible for this. An overactive immune system may turn upon the melanocytes and destroy them.

Symptoms

Sporadic loss of skin color throughout the body including hair and eyes.
One may start losing skin colour quickly in several areas of the body simultaneously.
Places like armpits and areas that were previously injured are commonly affected by discolouration.

Treatment
Doctors resort to re-pigmenting by UV light, skin lightening, and even skin graft. Even if such treatment is successful, there is no guarantee that the patches will not return. Such treatment often entails the risk of side effects.
Homeopathic treatment rarely has any side effect. More and more people are turning to homeopathy for the treatment of Vitiligo.

Homeopathic Treatment of Vitiligo

For people suffering from Vitiligo, it is a war on two fronts, and homeopathy has the distinction of fighting such wars.
Since Vitiligo is most probably an autoimmune condition, patients need a constitutional remedy to prevent the immune system from attacking skin cells.
They also need to fight the skin discoloration so that the skin can get back some of its lost colour.
A study conducted on 14 patients to assess the effect of homeopathy on Vitiligo has yielded very positive results. In this study, patients were subjected to customized homeopathic treatment. Patients in the early stages of Vitiligo were found to respond positively to homeopathic treatment.

Conclusion
Traditional treatment for Vitiligo is time-consuming, expensive and entails side effects. Moreover, the condition may relapse after a complete or partial cure. Homeopathy may offer complete or partial relief permanently since it offers both constitutional and symptomatic remedy.

Vitiligo And Leucoderma - How Can Homeopathy Tackle It?

The main pigment responsible for the hair and skin color is melanin. Melanocytes are the cells involved in the formation of melanin. Vitiligo is a dermatological condition (depigmentation) characterized by white spots or patches that appear in the body. Lack or absence of melanin is often responsible for the appearance of the white patches. Improper functioning or destruction of the melanocytes may interfere with the cell's ability to produce melanin. The condition can also affect your hair, scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, resulting in their premature greying or whitening.

Vitiligo can be localized (only one or very few body parts are affected), generalized (affecting many body parts) or segmented (the condition affects only one side of the body). An autoimmune condition such as Diabetes (Type-1) or Hashimoto's thyroiditis may trigger the destruction of the melanocytes. Vitiligo may also be a hereditary condition. In some cases, stress or exposure to harmful chemicals may be responsible for the destruction of the melanocytes.

While many people confuse vitiligo with leucoderma, there is a small difference between the two. Like vitiligo, the white patches in leucoderma appear due to the destruction of the melanocytes. However, the destruction of the melanocytes in the case of leucoderma may result from an accident, a cut, burn or tear.

When it comes to treatment, many people prefer homeopathy over conventional treatments and medications. Being natural with negligible or no side effects are the main USP of homeopathic treatment. People with vitiligo and leucoderma have benefitted immensely from the treatment. The treatment may not provide you with immediate results, but it is worth your time and patience. Most of the homeopathic medicines activate the melanocytes. This activation triggers the formation of the melanin, thereby resulting in re-pigmentation.

The following homeopathic medicines are very effective against vitiligo and leucoderma.

  1. Silicea 30: Silicea 30 is helpful for people with a sensitive skin that appears waxy and pale. In such patients, the patches or spots are not typically white but slightly rose-colored. There is extensive sweating of the hands and feet. The fingertips also appear cracked with brittle nails.
  2. Arsenic Album: In some patients with vitiligo or leucoderma, the skin may appear dry and rough. In addition to the white patches, a person may complain of exhaustion and asthma (not in all patients). The person may show signs of extreme restlessness and anxiety. They freak out over cleanliness and neatness. Such patients benefit immensely from Arsenic Album.
  3. Calcarea Carb is used to treat vitiligo where the patches appear milky white in color. There may be a weakness in the bones as well.
  4. Sepia: Sepia is used when people with vitiligo distant themselves from their families and loved ones.
  5. Nitric Acid 30 is used in the case of the white spots appearing at the mouth, nipples, nose, eyes, penis, vulva (mucous junctions).

Also, Sulfur, Psoralea Coryl 3X, Staphysagria, Borax, are equally helpful in treating vitiligo and leucoderma. To play it safe, use the medicines only after consulting a specialist. Self-medication may not be a wise idea.

Vitiligo - How Can Homeopathy Resolve It?

Vitiligo - How Can Homeopathy Resolve It?

Vitiligo is a skin disorder that leads to the appearance of white patches on the skin surface. The patches appear in random places, with very less underlying order to their arrangement. The cause of this disease is the impairment of skin melanocytes, structures that give skin its dark, or natural, pigment. This can be a result of the body attacking its own cells, making vitiligo an autoimmune disease.

Vitiligo does not occur to people in discrimination of gender and sets on early in life. This means that you will be affected irrespective of whether you are male or female, and will get it before you pass your 20’s completely. This disease may be hereditary. The diagnosis is made once you get patches of discolouration on your skin, and you will tend to get them rather quickly too.

What are the early signs of vitiligo?

The early symptoms of vitiligo include-

• Patchy loss of skin colour
• Premature greying of the hair follicles
• Change of colour of the retina
• Loss of colour of the mucous membrane

Some spots on the body may be more vulnerable to vitiligo. This includes the parts exposed to sunlight and parts that have suffered an injury in the past. The folded regions in your skin, like the underarms, are more vulnerable to this condition.

How does Homeopathy help treat vitiligo?

Unfortunately, conventional treatment does not offer a permanent cure to this condition. In most cases, doctors/skin specialists recommend homoeopathy treatment for managing the symptoms of vitiligo.

There are several reasons you should choose homoeopathy over conventional medicine vitiligo-

• Homoeopathy provides tailored treatment. It takes account of your personality and medical history and comes up with a treatment procedure custom made for you.
• The effects last for a longer duration. This is due to the customized treatment that homoeopathy affords.
• Homoeopathy provides a holistic treatment, which takes care of your mental state and lifestyle too, along with your physical state.
• The ingredients used in the preparation of homoeopathy medicines are natural and mild as compared to conventional medicine. Therefore, there are no risks or side effects involved in the procedure.

Vitiligo is a skin deformity that is still stigmatized in some parts of society. While the exact causes of this disease are not known, it can travel in the family. Its effects are irreversible, but you can manage them with the methods homoeopathy dictates, like those above.

Vitiligo - Know The Diet & Lifestyle Tips To Manage It Well!

Vitiligo or Leucoderma is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed. As a result, white patches appear on the skin in different parts of the body. Similar patches also appear on both the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose), and the retina (inner layer of the eyeball).

The hair that grows on areas affected by Vitiligo sometimes turns white. The most widely accepted view is that the depigmentation occurs because Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease - a disease in which a person's immune system reacts against the body's own organs or tissues.

Causes:

In Ayurveda, the reason behind autoimmune diseases is mostly virudh aahar sevan, that is, eating foods that are opposite in nature (such as eating fish and milk together). This results in toxin formation inside the body, which ultimately disturbs the immune system due to which the pigment-producing melanocytes cells get degenerated, causing Vitiligo.

Additionally, Vitiligo is said to be associated with certain auto-immune and inflammatory diseases such as ThyroidDiabetesPsoriasis and Pernicious Anemia. Vitiligo may also be hereditary; that is, it can run in families. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop Vitiligo.

Symptoms:

  • White patches on the skin
  • Premature graying of scalp hair
  • Loss of color inside the mouth

Ayurvedic Vitiligo Treatment:

According to Ayurveda, Vitiligo or Shwitra is caused due to the aggravation of Pitta in the body. Pitta is an Ayurvedic humor that symbolizes fire and is manifested in the skin, along with other organs. Pitta is of five types. One of them is Bhrajak Pitta, which gives coloration to the skin. In the case of Vitiligo, Bhrajak Pitta gets imbalanced, leading to the formation of ama, which consequently impairs deeper body tissues such as rasa dhatu (nutrient plasma), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscles) and lasika (lymph). This ultimately causes depigmentation of the skin.

The disease is deep-rooted and needs specific treatment that includes the right diet and specialized herbal combinations to pacify Pitta and cleanse ama from the body.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice:

  • Whole grains like porridge and whole wheat products are better than highly refined carbohydrates like pasta.
  • Adequate hydration is an important component of a healthy diet which should not be ignored.
  • Foods rich in Vitamin C such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and green tea should either be avoided or consumed in minimal quantities.
  • Avoid eating non-vegetarian foods like fish and red meats, as they may be highly antigenic and may worsen the autoimmune process. Also avoid eggs, milk, and dairy products.
  • Alcoholic and flavored drinks, ice creams, chocolates and any form of junk food is not recommended.
  • Avoid intake of sour foods like pickles, sour yogurt, and sour strawberries.
  • Neem in any form is useful. Mung dal is also good.

Is Green Tea Good For Vitiligo?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Is Green Tea Good For Vitiligo?

The patches of discoloration on the face are unsightly, to say the least. Yet there is hardly any cure for Vitiligo. Although there are treatments for Vitiligo available, it is not possible to cure the patient completely. Either it comes back or it refuses to completely fade away. This is why people suffering from Vitiligo have been searching for alternative therapies.

Green tea is the go-to beverage when it comes to detoxifying the body and enhancing immunity. Surprisingly, it is used by Vitiligo patients too for treating their symptoms. This is based on facts and studies have confirmed that green tea is indeed beneficial for treatment of Vitiligo.

Research Findings On Effect Of Green Tea On Vitiligo:

Green tea has several constituents that are beneficial for health in some way or the other. It contains caffeine, minerals and catechins. Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG is a catechin that has been studied for its effect on Vitiligo. EGCG is an important constituent of green tea, and it is the same element that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Green tea is found to be medically useful as it has anti-inflammatory, immune modulating and antioxidant character. However, the effect of green tea on Vitiligo was unknown.

The study has confirmed that Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) can delay the onset of Vitiligo, tone down the aggression of Vitiligo, and reduce the area of loss of pigmentation. The study also suggested that the application of green tea on depigmented sites can increase the density of melanin, a prerequisite for treating Vitiligo. Overall, the study suggested that green tea may be an important weapon in the fight against Vitiligo.

However, the benefits of green tea for Vitiligo are not restricted to EGCG. Antioxidants use in bringing down the symptoms of Vitiligo has been studied. It has been found that antioxidants have the effect of abetting pigmentation which, in turn, can bring down Vitiligo. Since green tea is an excellent antioxidant, it can surely be a booster for pigmentation and melanin production, and contribute to reduction in Vitiligo symptoms.

Other Beneficial Effects of Green Tea:

Green tea can be beneficial not only for treating Vitiligo, but also for treating the discomfort of Vitiligo. People suffering from Vitiligo are averse for going outside since long exposure to sunlight can cause itching and discomfort. With about two cups of green tea on a regular basis and application of green tea on the depigmented sites, it is possible to bring down itching, irritation, and discomfort. This implies that using green tea for Vitiligo may be a good option.

Conclusion:

It is rarely possible to cure Vitiligo completely. It also appears to be very unlikely to stop recurrence of Vitiligo. However, with regular application and use of green tea one may be able to control the spread of this disease and also bring down its severity. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune modulatory functions of green tea can be a boon for Vitiligo patients as well as for overall health in general.

What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is an acquired autoimmune disorder in which there is a focal loss of melanocytes which are pigment-producing cells in the skin and give tone to our skin. In case of vitiligo; melanocytes are targeted by the immune system of the body and are destroyed resulting in loss of pigment from the area.

Risk factors

  • Family history of vitiligo
  • Family history of autoimmune disorders such as diabetes, thyroid, adrenal disorders etc.
  • Associated autoimmune disorders such as diabetes, thyroid, adrenal disorders etc.
  • Trauma and sunburn

Types of vitiligo

Vitiligo may be classified into localized vitiligo and generalized vitiligo.

  • Localized vitiligo may be further classified into:
    • Focal: in this type hypo-pigmented spots are confined to one or more area.
    • Segmental: in this type of vitiligo one or more areas of hypo-pigmentation is seen but spots are confined to one side of the body only. This type is usually seen in children.
    • Mucosal: in this type of vitiligo only mucous membrane is affected.

  • Generalized vitiligo can be classified further into:
  • Acrofacial: hypopigmentation seen on parts which are away from the centre of the body i. E. Face, head, extremities etc.
  • Universal: hypopigmentation covering almost whole body.

Mixed type of vitiligo may also be seen in which various patterns can be seen together.

Symptoms & causes
Symptoms

  • Hypopigmented spots on the skin usually starting from the sun-exposed areas. Sometimes graying of hair on the affected parts is seen along with graying of eyelashes.
  • Mucosal linings are also affected in few, causing depigmentation of the mucous membranes.
  • Itching may also be seen in few cases especially in active stage along with sensitivity on exposure to sun.

Causes
Exact cause of vitiligo is not known but a few possibilities are:

  • Autoimmune cause: pigment producing cells (melanocytes) are attacked by the immune cells of the body and are destroyed.
  • Stress: stress may also trigger vitiligo
  • Sunburn: excessive and prolonged exposure to sun can also trigger vitiligo.
  • Chemical exposure may also cause vitiligo
  • Family history of vitiligo increases the chances of inheritance of vitiligo.
  • Injury: at the place of injury depigmentation may start with the healing process.

A hypothesis also states that depigmentation is seen along the pressure areas of the body i. E along the waist line.

 Diagnosis & treatment

  • Presence of depigmented spots
  • Antinuclear antibody helps in determination of autoimmune disorder.
  • Thyroid profile for presence of thyroid disorder, thyroid peroxidase antibody for presence of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Treatment

Phototherapy: exposure to uva or uvb light can help some individuals with the condition.

Homeopathic medicine
Management

  • Educate the patient and family members about the disease.
  • Clarify the facts about vitiligo that:
  • It is a non-contagious disorder and can't spread by contact.
  • It has no age, sex or ethnic discrimination.
  • Vitiligo is photosensitive and patients should avoid exposure of skin to direct sunlight for prolonged period.
  • Dietary advices should also be given like:
  • Cashew nuts aggravates vitiligo
  • Food with vitamin c aggravates vitiligo

Homeopathic management
Homeopathy has great scope in treatment of vitiligo as after through case taking and evaluation of the case constitutional best suited medicine is given to the patient which can promptly help in re-pigmentation and can cause complete cure also.
There are various medicines like sulphur, arsenic album, tuberculinum, phosphorus, calcarea carb, psorinum etc which can cure vitiligo depending on the case and personality of the patient.

Do’s and don’ts
Do’s

  • Take healthy nutritious diet.
  • Cover the body while going out in sun.

Don’ts

  • Avoid exposure to sun.
  • Avoid sour food items.
  • Avoid cashew nuts.
  • Avoid scratching as it may help in spread of spots.

Vitiligo - What Causes It?

Vitiligo is a skin condition that results in the formation of white patches on the skin. In this case, any part of the body can be affected. Most people affected by Vitiligo have white patches appearing on many parts of their body.

Vitiligo Symptoms
Vitiligo symptoms include pigment loss, often rapid in nature, in several parts of the skin. A stable period without any progression of the condition is usually preceded by the initial appearance of the white patches. Further cycles of pigment loss may be observed later on. Areas on the skin that stay exposed to the sun, previous sites of injury and body folds (such as the area behind the knees) are the common sites that are affected by this condition. The pigment usually doesn’t return once the white patches start showing up. It might also affect the hair and the eyelids.

Causative factors for Vitiligo
The pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color is melanin. The loss of pigment in the skin causes Vitiligo. It happens due to the destruction of melanocytes which are the primary pigment-forming cells. The exact reason for the destruction of these cells is idiopathic or not known. One probable explanation is that the body's immune system kills the cells just like in other autoimmune conditions. In dark-skinned people, Vitiligo is more noticeable despite it affecting all races equally.

Prognosis and treatment of Vitiligo
The diagnosis of Vitiligo is relatively easy and can be performed during a physical exam. The prevention or cure of Vitiligo is unknown so far. Several methods such as cosmetics, re-pigmentation with the use of UV light therapy, application of corticosteroid creams and skin grafting might be used to improve or alter to an extent, the appearance of the skin, for those severely affected by Vitiligo.

Vitiligo - Know Causes & Treatment Of It!

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes loss of pigmentation of the skin. Melanocytes, the pigment cells, within the skin are destroyed. This causes these parts of the skin to lose color and turn pale. It might affect different parts of the body including the arms, legs, face and even genitalia. It can affect a person of any age, ethnicity or gender.

Causes

The exact cause of vitiligo is not definitively known. However, there are a number of risk factors that might contribute to the condition. These include-

  1. Autoimmune disorders- Vitiligo might be a result of an autoimmune disorder where the overactive immune system destroys the pigment cells of the skin.
  2. Exposure to Chemicals- Exposure to certain chemicals can increase the risk of vitiligo by causing depigmentation.
  3. Hereditary factors- There might be a genetic pre-disposition towards vitiligo. Though a person can exhibit symptoms of the condition at any age, it is most commonly found to manifest itself around the age of 20 years.

Symptoms

Vitiligo may start with a simple spot of pale skin but over time, this spot expands and turns paler until it is white in colour. Irregular in shape, the edges of these spots may inflame and cause itchiness.

Treatment

The treatment of vitiligo will be determined by a number of factors such as the number and the extent of the white patches and where they are located. Vitiligo treatment includes cosmetic, medical and surgical methods.

  1. Narrowband UVB therapy - Narrowband UVB therapy is used for repigmentation.
  2. Cosmetic Treatment - Cosmetic and skincare products such as sunscreens, dye or makeup can help relieve and hide signs of the condition.
  3. Medical Treatment - Oral medication or medicated ointments may be prescribed to treat Vitiligo. If the condition has spread to a considerable extent then the physician might advise that the colour from the remaining areas of the skin also be removed in order to match the affected areas.
  4. Surgical Treatment - Surgical treatments are at times prescribed which involve skin grafting or tattooing. This is usually prescribed for those with small patches of affected areas.

With ongoing and extensive research being conducted on this skin condition, we will in the near future be able to both understand and treat it better.
