A vaginoplasty surgery tries to bring separated muscles back together, thereby tightening the vagina in the process which has become loose due to vaginal or natural childbirth and or due to aging. The additional mucosa skin is removed from behind the vagina. A vaginoplasty surgery is also done to treat malignant growths such as cancer and abscesses or in other words accumulation of pus inside the tissue of the concerned patient.
According to Gynecologists this surgery can better sexual satisfaction or sexual response by improving the feelings of sensitivity, although there is no certainty in this matter. Originally the vaginoplasty surgery was invented in order to remedy birth defects in girls where the vagina was absent or malformed. This was a reconstructive treatment method and it was done to enable the girl to be able to urinate, have normal menstruation and sexual intercourse. A vaginoplasty surgery can alter the size of the vaginal entry point and also bring about alterations to the vulva’s appearance.
Although a vaginoplasty surgery can be performed in children, it is subject to matters of human rights debate as children are not of the age to give consent legally.
The concerned patient will be asked to quit smoking a month before the scheduled surgery date as smoking reduces oxygenation. This hampers blood flow leading to loss and also slows down significantly the body’s ability to heal itself. The surgery cannot be performed at the time a woman is having her periods and has to be scheduled in a way that it takes place at the end of the menstrual cycle. If the surgery is scheduled right after the end of your periods then the operated area will heal in time so as not to cause you any discomfort during your next cycle.
An entire physical examination will be carried out by the doctor to check your health condition and you will also be given counselling regarding the possible risks and complications.
Before undergoing surgery patients will be required to do bowel preparation. Then a check is done by the surgeon to determine and fix the amount of tightening that needs to be done. The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Sometimes, it is also performed under conscious which is a process where a drug called Diprovan is administered. This medication will keep the patient in a state of sleep and will continue to have its effects as long as the drug is being administered.
All those born with malformed vagina’s or those with loose vagina as a result of natural childbirth are eligible to go for this surgery.
All those below 18 years of age are not eligible to go for irreversible genital reconstructive surgery or vaginoplasty surgery.
Usually, the common side effects noticed after the completion of a vaginoplasty surgery are nausea and dizziness as a result of the anaesthesia that is administered in order to perform the surgery. Difficulty urinating, abnormal bleeding, vaginal discharge, hematoma, experiencing pain during sexual intercourse, loss of sensitivity or pleasure during sexual activities, infection at the site of the surgery or inflammation and also leaking at the area between the vagina and bladder.
Like all surgeries and treatments you will be asked to adhere to certain post-treatment guidelines in order to speed up the process of healing. A patient is advised not to lift heavy objects as that can put strain on the site of surgery. You should also abstain from taking baths in the swimming pool or hot tub during your healing period. You are advised to go back to your normal activities including sexual intercourse activities after six weeks time. Also, ensure to follow up your condition and the medications that you are taking by visiting the doctor every now and then.
The entire surgery duration lasts for about two hours after which you will be held back in the recovery room of the hospital/clinic for another two hours to monitor for any adverse side effects. The time to heal completely after returning home takes about four to six weeks. Although it has been seen that some patients resume their daily activities sometimes in a week’s time as well
The cost of vaginal surgery in India varies depending upon the type of surgery and also the city where you decide to get operated. However, the cost of the surgery alone will be somewhere around 1-2 lakhs.
The results of vaginoplasty or vaginal rejuvenation surgery is usually permanent in case of most patients. However, the vagina can go to its original loose state if the patient undergoes any future vaginal childbirth once again.
An alternative to vaginoplasty is vaginal tightening without having to introduce or insert surgical instruments into the body. It works by warming up the tissues with a laser or radiofrequency waves. But this alternative treatment method will not be very beneficial to patients with too much vaginal laxity.
