The tenure of tonsillitis depends on what type of tonsillitis it is. If it is of viral nature, it lasts usually from four to six days. Antibiotics become ineffective and it takes a little more time for recovery. If tonsillitis is of the bacterial nature, it can last up to 10 to 14 days.

Swollen lymph nodes in the neck are a common symptom of many viral and bacterial infections. An enlarged thyroid gland is a known cause of neck swelling in adults.

Your tonsils -- the bumps on either side at the back of your throat -- might be red and swollen, too. These could be signs of bacterial infection like strep throat or oral thrush, or a viral infection like oral herpes or mononucleosis.

Tonsillitis is most often caused by common viruses, but bacterial infections also can be the cause. The most common bacterium causing tonsillitis is streptococcus pyogenes (group a streptococcus), the bacterium that causes strep throat. Other strains of strep and other bacteria also may cause tonsillitis
