Compared to children, tonsillitis is less serious in adults. However, there are certain risk factors involving tonsillitis in adults. Age is one of the major factors. People over 65 years of age are more prone towards severeal infections that could be serious at times. If tonsils are still occuring even if you are an adult, it is definitely a concerning situation. Also asults who spend more time with children like parents, grandparents and teachers are more vulnerable to tonsillitis.

I personally dissuade against removing the tonsils for recurrent infections whcih can be controlled with antibiotics. Tonsils are defensive organs whcih protect agist bacterial invasion of our body. I know many patients with many different diseases following the tonsillectomy.

The best and the most common home remedy for tonsillitis is to gargle with warm salt water. The warm water will have a soothing effect and the salt will help kill the virus or bacteria. Plus, salt helps reduce inflammation, giving you instant relief.
Mix one teaspoon of table salt in a cup of warm water.
Gargle with the solution. Do not swallow it. Spit the water out after gargling.
Repeat this as often as possible for speedy recovery.

Dear lybrate user, cough for 3 days is not normal. Few more details regarding your cough (dry/ productive), fever if present, running nose if present, whether its disturbing your sleep, breathlessness if present, past episodes if any, etc. are required to prescribe medication. Meanwhile, till the time you seek consultation try warm salt water gargles in the morning and night and protect yourself from dust. Take care!
