Schizophrenia is a relapsing disorder. Early recognition and meeting a psychiatrist is a very good sign of preventing relapse.

Your problem is that you have not combined medication with therapy. Then I suspect that you discontinued medication on your own and that might have lead to the relapse. Comply with all the medical prescriptions and work in tandem with a counselor for a long time and learn coping skills and techniques to handle the daily challenges you will face. Along with medicines you need counseling as well so that you and your mind would be enough strong to fight with negative thoughts even when you would be stop taking medicines.
