Sarvanan, When thyroid functions are normal usually TSH levels are looked at, these should be between 0.5 to 6 milli units ml Serum thyroxine (T4 4.6 to 12 ng/dl), serum T3 80 to 180 ng/dl. If TSH goes up then it is diagnosed as hypothyroidism. Weight gain, swelling of face, lower limb, slow heart rate, irregular periods, intolerance to cold, dry skin and hair, hair fall, difficulty in speech, inability to concentrate, anxiety and depression. If not trreated then it can lead to more serious ...more

Mr. Lybrate-user, hypothyroidism does increase weight. But other symptoms also are there like lethargy, tiredness, early fatigue, intolerance to cold, slow heart rate, swelling of face and lower limbs, joint pains, inability to concentrate, difficulty in speech, anxiety and depression etc. Looking at your height and weight you are having a grade 3 obesity with 44.54 kg /m2. This is probably not due to only hypothyroidism, you are probably having this (over weight problem) condition since a long ...more

Mr. Lybrate-user, it would have been better if you had mentioned what was the condition that you had as a child. Because thyroid is an endocrine gland present in all of us. It produces hormone thyroxine, which is essential for development and functioning of brain, for a large number of metabolic activities in the body. Deficiency of that hormone causes hypothyroidism and excess causes hyperthyroidism. So it is unclear by saying" I have had thyroid"

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
Hyperthyroidism and thyroiditis are comparatively easily manageable conditions, provided proper medications are taken as advised. If there is very high level of T4 & T3 and low TSH then one has to take anti-thyroid drugs, which will help in controlling hyperactivity, sometimes for a long time or in some cases for a shorter duration. Based on the results further treatments can be taken. Thanks.

There is no relation between thyroid function status and cancer. So still you can develop cancer even if your thyroid functions are normal.

Lybrate-user, if there is family history of hypothyroidism, it may occur in the offspring also. There is no specific method to avoid it from developing. However, using iodinated salt regularly so as to prevent deficiency of iodine leading to development of hypothyroidism, is one method. Secondly it is better to avoid soy beans, soy containing foods, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts and coffee. Plus use whole grain flour for making roti and chapati, avoid maida and product...more
