Nose Block & Mouth Breathing - How To Handle It In Kids?

Mouth breathing isn’t a problem in itself. Both, the mouth and the nose are healthy airways to the lungs. However, when someone has to breathe from their mouth due to a nose block, it is not only uncomfortable but also unhealthy. Adults can easily notice when they have blocked nasal cavities but children need special attention.

Ill Effects of Blocked Nose

Having a blocked nose does not only end in the irritating mouth breathing but also in long term complications like:

  • Misaligned teeth

  • Facial deformities

  • Halitosis

  • Gum and dental health issues like gingivitis and cavities

  • Fatigue

  • Frequent infections

  • Throat and ear infections

  • Allergic reactions

The nose produces nitric oxide that facilitates oxygen distribution throughout the body, especially to the lungs. When a child depends on mouth breathing, the lack of oxygen fatigues them. The child also becomes susceptible to infections because nitric oxide is antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial.

The mucus and hair follicles in the nose prevent dust and pollen from entering the airways. Mouth breathing results in particle retention in the lungs and dryness of the bronchial tubes.

Prolonged mouth breathing is indeed not healthy. So, we need to spot it and treat it.

How to Spot Mouth Breathing in Children?

You can conclude that your child is suffering from a blocked nose if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Snoring

  • Dry mouth

  • Chapped lips

  • Halitosis

  • Fatigue and daytime sleepiness

  • Dark circles

  • Irritability throughout the day and especially during bedtime

Causes of Nose Block and Mouth Breathing in Children

Considering all the ill-effects and the difficult symptoms, nobody would choose to breathe from their mouth. So, what causes mouth breathing or blocked nose even when the child does not have a cold?

Diagnosis

Although one can clearly see the symptoms, only a licensed practitioner can give a conclusive diagnosis. A general physician, ENT specialist, or a dentist can diagnose mouth breathing. They may ask questions about the symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment for mouth breathing will be done according to the diagnosed cause.

  • Antihistamines and nasal decongestants are the common methods of treatment because nasal blockage generally occurs due to cold or allergies.

  • In the case of obstructive sleep apnea, a CPAP mask needs to be worn at bedtime.

  • In the case of tonsils or adenoids, surgical removal is the answer.

  • In the case of dental deformities, braces and other dental structures are helpful.

  • Myofunctional therapy in addition to the required medication.

Once an ENT specialist has discovered the cause, treatment of blocked nose or mouth breathing is easy. Nevertheless, prevention is even better so look out for risk factors such as tonsils, asthma, and other causes. Also, keep your air free of allergens with HVAC air purifiers. It is always advisable to follow all the preventing instruction prescribed by the doctor for better results. Also, if one notices any of the symptoms, it is recommended to consult doctors as soon as possible.

Feeling Of Something Struck In Throat (FOSIT) - Know More!

Feeling Of Something Struck In Throat (FOSIT) - Know More!

A lot of patients complains of symptoms like:
A) something is obstructing my throat for quite some time. (gale mei kuchh atka atka sa rehta hai)
B) chronic throat pain/discomfort (gale mei kaafi time se uljhan/dard)
C) change in voice (awaz ka badalna)
D) burning sensation throat (gale mei jalan)

These kinds of patients should get checked up by an ent specialist where the proper examination is done and a diagnosis can be made.

One of the most common cause is termed as LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux). In this disease, the acid produced in the stomach rises up through food pipe and goes all the up to larynx (voice box) and pharynx causing irritation and giving rise to these symptoms. An ent throat examination and fibre optic laryngoscopy (fol) can diagnose this condition.

LPR is a benign condition which is usually managed with proper dietary habits and medication to counter gastric reflux. Good dietary habits I would suggest are:

1) get up early and drink 2 glasses of water. This will keep your digestion good and prevent reflux.
2) avoid tea, coffee, soft drinks, chocolate, smoking and alcohol. They all are the cause of acidity.
3) avoid spicy and oily foods.
4) avoid heavy diets and take frequent small meals (4-5 meals a day rich in proteins with low fats and carbs)
5) drink plenty of water
6) exercise daily with some sport activity

There could be other many causes for its simple laryngeal structural abnormalities like cysts/polyp/nodules to malignant tumors (cancer larynx). This requires further examination and management.

Ear Troubles - How Does Homeopathy Help?

Earaches can make life miserable. At times, the pain gets so intense that it throws life in jeopardy. This is where homeopathic medicines come as a huge relief. Earaches of different origins can be effectively treated with homeopathic medicines.

*  Chamomilla:  Chamomilla is the best homeopathic relief for people suffering from excruciating earache. The pain usually aggravates at night. The maddening pain leaves the person mentally very agitated. The medicine is equally helpful for children who get agitated and irritated due to the unbearable pain.

*  Pulsatilla:  At times, the earache is accompanied by a thick (mostly greenish) discharge from the ear. As a result, the ear feels quite heavy. A person might also experience difficulty in hearing. The darting pain is at its worst self at night. Such earaches and associated symptoms are best treated with the homeopathic medicine, Pulsatilla.

Sometimes, even a little exposure to cold air can result in earaches. Worse still, there is pus like discharge from the ear and fever. The ear is very sensitive to touch. Hepar Sulph is an ideal homeopathic remedy under such circumstances. Psorinum is mainly used when the pus like discharge has a very unpleasant odour.

At times, dental problems and throat infections can result in severe earache. Homeopathy has a solution for all. Plantago is an excellent homeopathic medicine to treat earaches resulting from toothache. Merc Sol is effective against earaches originating from dental problems. In such cases, there may be blood or yellow discharge from the ear. The pain gets unbearable at night.

Lachesis and Phytollaca are known to provide great relief from earaches resulting from throat infections. Lachesis is helpful when the throat pain slowly shoots up to the left ear. Swallowing of food makes the situation worse. Phytollaca, on the other hand, is the best medicine when the shooting ear pain is right sided. Belladonna helps to deal with severe and throbbing ear pain.

*  Infection of the Otitis Media (middle ear) is a common factor, resulting in earaches. There may be fever and pus like discharge. The hearing is also greatly impaired. At night, the pain reaches the superlative degree. Go for Hepar Sulph if the pain intensifies upon slightest exposure to cold air. Use Belladona in case the ear infection is at a very nascent stage. Pulsatilla is equally effective to treat such earaches.

*  Many a times, the ear pain can be of nerve origin. It is more of a facial pain, with the ear being affected. Verbascum Thapsus (Mullen Oil) can be of great help and can also be effectively used as an ear drop to provide some relief.

Tonsillitis - Know The Causes & Symptoms Of It!

Tonsillitis is a disorder of the tonsils present on the back of your throat. The tonsils acts as a defensive mechanism in the body as they prevent the body from infections. This is a contagious condition and can occur at any age. It is widely prevalent among school going kids.

Tonsillitis may be classified into two types:

  1. Chronic tonsillitis: This type of tonsillitis tends to last for an extended duration with symptoms of bad breath and tenderness in the lymph nodes.
  2. Recurrent tonsillitis: This is a form of acute tonsillitis which repeats itself over a year.

Causes: Tonsils prevent various virus and bacteria from entering the body through the mouth by producing antibodies. The tonsils, however, may become vulnerable to these infections. A virus that causes common cold or the bacteria that causes strep throat may result in tonsillitis. The most common cause of this disorder is the strep bacteria. School going children are especially vulnerable to this disorder because they are most prone to various infections.

The various viruses that may cause tonsillitis are:

  2. Herpes simplex virus
  3. Epstein-Barr virus
  4. Influenza virus
  5. Adenovirus
  6. Parainfluenza virus

Common symptoms:
