Tonsillitis are majorly caused by bacterial and viral infections. Streptococcus (strep) bacteria is the main cause for tonsillitis and it also the main reason that causes strep throat (sore and scratchy throat). Other common causes include - adenoviruses, influenza virus, epstein-barr virus, parainfluenza viruses, enteroviruses and herpes sumplex virus.
