Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
To find out whether there is any problem with thyroid gland, Thyroid Function Test has to be done. Based on TSH level it is possible to decide whether one has hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Symptoms depend upon what type of the problem is present. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
When one is on treatment with adequate quantity of thyroxine, TSH is maintained around 3 to 4 mU/l and all the symptoms are in check. T4 & T3 levels are normal only because one is on treatment. The day one stops it, TSH will be affected and all the symptoms will be back. So treatment has to continue for lifetime. Thanks.

Mr. Lybrate-user, it would have been better if you had mentioned what was the condition that you had as a child. Because thyroid is an endocrine gland present in all of us. It produces hormone thyroxine, which is essential for development and functioning of brain, for a large number of metabolic activities in the body. Deficiency of that hormone causes hypothyroidism and excess causes hyperthyroidism. So it is unclear by saying" I have had thyroid"

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) occurs when your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can accelerate your body's metabolism, causing unintentional weight loss and a rapid or irregular heartbeat.
