Replace Tomato Ketchup With Home-Made Tomato Chutney

The problem with the commercialized ketchup available in all markets is that even though they may be addictive, they often contain high-fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, brown rice syrup, cane crystals and tomato concentrates in place of naturally produced tomatoes. As a result, they bring about a host of health problems which propels one to prepare home-made tomato chutney easily with a handful of ingredients.

The simple home-made tomato chutney can also be consumed as ketchup, and it is quite easy to prepare as well. A different recipe that needs garlic, ginger along with some dry red chilies or chili flakes, the recipe is healthy as well. The red chilies add a gentle touch of hotness as well as smokiness which you will feel while cooking. The chutney can be a good option to be used as an accompaniment with snacks or other foods.

Ingredients For The Homemade Tomato Chutney
For making around 2.5 kg of tomato chutney, you will require the same amount of tomatoes, around 5 grams of garlic, a quarter inch ginger and 5 to 7 dry red chilies which should be deseeded and halved. You may also add half-a-cup of raisins, half cup of apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon of rock salt, about a quarter teaspoon of sodium benzoate dissolved in warm water. The sodium benzoate acts as a preservative so that the shelf life of the product is more. You should try to replace sugar with the natural element stevia which is not just super sweet but has no calories with a zero-glycemic index. It is a great sweetener and is available in the woods of Brazil and Paraguay. You will be surprised to know that the leaves of this plant are about 300 times sweeter than sugar. It would stay good for 6 months, but the taste would be so amazing that you will end up finishing it sooner.

Procedure To Make The Chutney
Rinse the tomatoes and raisins well in water and chop the tomatoes in roughly sliced pieces. Now peel the ginger, garlic and chop them. You will have to cut the chilies in halves and deseed them. Take all the chopped tomatoes in a 5-litre pressure cooker and add garlic, ginger, red chilies, vinegar, raisins, salt, and sugar or stevia. Keep the flame low and start mixing them and as the tomatoes start to soften, you should switch off the gas. Allow the mixture to cool down and blend it well into a smooth puree. Strain the mixture into a large saucepan or pot. Your last step is to stir and dissolve the sodium benzoate in a cup of hot water and add it directly to your chutney. The home-made tomato chutney is ready to be served. Refrigerate it after use. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Drinking ayurvedic tea has been in practice for thousands of years, and can provide a wide range of benefits to those who regularly consume it.

What is ayurvedic tea?

Ayurvedic teas are traditional herbal teas prepared in ayurvedic medicine, the traditional indian approach to health and wellness. Ayurvedic teas come in three main types, vata tea, pitta tea, and kapha tea. These three teas consist of different herbal elements and they are believed to detoxify and cleanse the body in very specific ways. These ayurvedic teas are famed for being able to increase health and longevity, along with a number of otherhealth benefits. Provided you aren’t specifically allergic to any ingredients and have spoken to your doctor about any dangers of taking these herbal tonics, these teas should be completely safe to consume.

Ayurvedic tea benefits

The most impressive health benefits of ayurvedic tea include its effects on memory, digestion, and weight loss, among many others. Despite being a caffeine-free beverage, it can still help to improve the metabolism and optimize fat-burning by the body, and can also improve digestive efficiency, preventing the build-up of toxins in our gastrointestinal system. The anti-inflammatory nature of these types of tea is also excellent for chronic conditions, as well as preventing chronic inflammation, which can lead to oxidative stress and damage from free radicals.

Various studies on these teas also show that they can have effects on cognitive health and lower your risks of neurodegenerative diseases, such as alzheimer’s disease and parkinson’s.

How to make ayurvedic tea?

As mentioned, the three main types of ayurvedic tea are vata tea, pitta tea, and kapha tea. Depending on who is preparing these blends, the amounts of these herbal ingredients may vary, but the basic recipes rarely do. As with any other herbal tea, these herbs are allowed to steep in water for varying amounts of time before being served.

Sugar Addiction - 5 Ways That Can Help Manage It!

Sugar addiction is basically a relentless sugar craving that is triggered in the brain due to mental hunger or an inherent sweet tooth. Yet, excessive sugar is not a good thing in the long run. It can lead to diabetes and various other issues like high cholesterol, hypertension, and obesity. Also, people whose grandparents have suffered from diabetes need to be especially careful of such sweet cravings as it may trigger the same problem in them too. So how can you cut sugar out of your life?

Here's a list of tips.

  1. Detox or Gradual Scaling Down: While many people are in favour of gradually scaling down your sugar intake and slowly cutting it out of your life in a matter of weeks and months, there are experts who believe in stopping intake of it. A clean break from sugar is said to have a beneficial detox like effect on the brain and body. Many experts recommend cutting sugar out of your life in one clean swipe.
  2. Replacements: Using other substances like honey or even extracts from the Stevia plant are known to be a good replacement plan for cutting down your sugar addiction. You can start by introducing your system to these replacements in your daily beverages like tea, coffee or lemonade, before moving on to the use of organic honey for desserts and baking, as well as other sugar-free desserts and puddings.
  3. Fruits: The best way to get your sugar indulgence fixed is to have a good dose of fruit. This can help in giving you a good amount of dietary sugars which are natural and do not harm the body in the long run. Also, fruits are a healthy way of ingesting sugar even as you get valuable nutrients, vitamins and mineral - one arrow, many targets!
  4. Clean Up: Take a walk around your home and find all those secret candy stashes. Also, look for your dessert and pudding trays in the fridge. Now take all this out and give them away or trash them. Once you remove the option of snacking on sugary treats, you will be in a better place to avoid it altogether.
  5. Magnesium: Your chocolate craving might actually be a call for magnesium that your body is missing out on. Similarly, a mental hunger pang may actually be a need for water or some solid food. Avoid the sugary rush and take the healthy route instead, with the help of nuts and dairy.

Controlling your sugar addiction can save you from various ailments even as it gives you a healthier lifestyle.

Food Items We Think Are Healthy But They Aren't

Dr. Sunita Attray 90% (18 ratings)

Dietitian/Nutritionist, Delhi

" Healthy food" -As the label says and people buy the packet.

Are these foods actually good as we imagine they will be?

Here is a list of food items we think are healthy but ther aren't.

1. Vegetable oils: generally marketed as heart healthy, but experts say they are worst for cooking. They have unnatural levels of pufa n omega-6 fatty acids along with chemical additives therby causing infertility, hormonal trouble, obesity, heart, liver n kidney damage. One must consume kachchi ghani mustard oil, coconut oil or homemade desi ghee in limited amount or as suggested by dietician.

2. Artificial sweeteners: or sugarfree: are extremely unhealthy. Some contain aspartame known to induce cancer. Instead one can use honey, stevia or jaggery

3. Breakfast cereals: like cornflakes, wheatflakes, meusli etc. They have high sugar content, processed grains, additives n sodium salts. One must consume a good homemade breakfast to start your day with like poha, parathas, upma, cheela, omlette etc that has good nutritional value and give satiety too.

4. Baked chips or namkeens: as the packet says fat free or 90% less fat, but experts say they have equal calorie content as fried chips or namkeens. So one must choose roasted seeds, chana, murmura, makhana and nuts for munching.

5. Bottled ice tea: it contains a lot of sugar and no antioxidant of which tea is an excellent source, means primary reason to drink tea is missing.
Plain water, lemon water, coconut water or fresh juice are better options.

6. Microwaved popcorn: these have 3 times more calories as compared to regular popcorn. While making on stove we can adjust butter, oil or salt content.

7. Frozen packaged meat: it contains potentially dangerous chemicals to help it last longer. Frozen meat loses its nutritional value.

We need to choose wisely when trying to buy healthy food from market.

Stevia Benefits and Side Effects in Hindi -

Diabetic Neuropathy - How Ayurveda Can Help You Manage It?

How to manage diabetic neuropathy naturally?
Diabetic neuropathy is a chronic medical condition that results in nerve damage. This occurs due to the inefficient usage of insulin hormone in the body. More than 60 diabetic patients shows one or the other signs of neuropathy. The latter can aggravate to more complicated problems, if the blood sugar levels are not kept in check. Here is a list of some natural remedies that will help you fight diabetic neuropathy.

  1. Controlling the blood sugar level: It is important to maintain a healthy blood sugar level to prevent any further damage of blood vessels, nerves, skin, eyes and other parts of the body. The best way to keep your blood sugar in check is by maintaining a healthy diet, exercising on a daily basis and living a stress-free life. Frequent blood sugar tests should be conducted to ensure that the readings are within the accepted level.
  2. A proper diet: Diet of a person has a direct effect on the blood sugar levels. Intake of refined carbs and sugar drinks should be strictly avoided to stabilize blood sugar. Fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins and fiber, and are antioxidant in nature should be consumed regularly. Other food items such as wild-caught fish, olive oil, nuts, avocado, coconut oil, egg whites (albumen), legumes and stevia greatly help in maintaining blood sugar level.
  3. Exercise and physical activity: A study conducted by the Journal of Diabetes Complications in 2012 reported that daily exercise significantly helps a diabetic neuropathy patient to bring down the blood sugar to a more accepted level. Walking for a span of 30-45 minutes daily, performing mild exercises, cycling and swimming lower the blood sugar level. They also help the body in using the insulin in a much better fashion, reducing cholesterol and improving blood circulation in the body. Additionally, daily exercise strengthens muscles and increases mobility.
  4. Refrain from toxic chemicals: Chemicals such as pesticides, beauty products and unnecessary antibiotics can lead to kidney stone formation for a patient of diabetic neuropathy. Toxic wastes in the blood aggravate the symptoms of diabetes leading to other complications. Consumption of alcohol or any other nicotine-related products should be stopped as well. They tend to damage the nerve and increase the risk of heart attacks and cardiac arrests.
  5. Stress management: Stress is another culprit responsible for enhancing diabetic neuropathy. It not only escalates the blood sugar level, but also increases the chance of cardiac-related diseases such as cardiac arrest and strokes. Exercise, meditation, practicing hobbies, spending time with friends and family are few ways of relieving stress. Studies have shown that alternate treatments such as acupuncture can also relieve you from stress to a great extent. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ayurveda.

Pregnant - Should You Consume Artificial Sweeteners?

Pregnant - Should You Consume Artificial Sweeteners?

Ingredients that you generally come across in candies, soft drinks, desserts and so on are known as artificial sweeteners. Many women during their pregnancy include these ingredients (in the form of foods and drinks that have been artificially sweetened) in their diet so as to cut down the amount of sugar in their diet.

But before you go about including them in your diet during pregnancy, there are certain things that you need to be aware of. Artificial sweeteners are generally of two types - nutritive sweeteners and nonnutritive sweeteners, the former contains calories while the latter doesn't.

Which sweeteners are safe to have?

Nutritive sweeteners, when consumed in moderation, can be looked upon as safe to have when you're pregnant, as long as they don't add to your body weight. But if you suffer from carbohydrate intolerance like diabetes, insulin resistance or even gestational diabetes, you need to limit the consumption of nutritive sweeteners. This type of sweeteners includes the different forms of sugar sucrose, honey, corn sugar, maltose, fructose and dextrose.

On the other hand, non-nutritive sweeteners are found in small quantities in foods since their role there is to only add a certain sweetening effect to the food product. Experts are still carrying out research on the effects of this type of sweeteners on pregnant women and their babies during pregnancy. The category includes options like sucralose, aspartame, rebaudioside a or stevia and acesulfame potassium.

Which sweeteners are not safe to have during pregnancy?

Apart from certain sweeteners that you can have during this period, there are some that are a total no-go - these are saccharin and cyclamate. While insufficient data is available for the effect of cyclamate on pregnant women, several studies conducted in the past show the adverse effect of saccharin. Certain studies have revealed its effect on the bladder (it can lead to bladder cancer) as well as on fetal tissue and placenta. Contact with this form of sweeteners can cause the unborn or infants to develop muscle dysfunction and irritability. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.
